You know the old saying about "because it's there"? Well, this Guide was
written because it *wasn't* there. A few good posts were available on the
message boards, but there was no single, comprehensive source for invention
data. This springs largely from Dark's attempts to collate and correct the
information found in the official Prima guide to Dark Cloud 2, and has grown to
incorporate a great deal of additional information as well. In version 3.0,
AngelKnight came on board with a full listing of invention costs and an amazing
number of new entries.
As of version 4.2.2, this Guide is considered "complete". This Guide now
contains all the basic types of information that Dark intended when he first
started it, and it lists every photo in the game (although there appears to be
two Ideas listed as Scoops that need sorted out), as well as every invention.
We still welcome submissions and suggestions, but it's very unlikely there will
be a version 5.0. We would like to thank all our readers, especially those who
have submitted info to us, for helping us come as far as we have. It's been
fun! Maybe I should write Guides more often :-)

Q: There are 294 photos? But you can only save 30 on the Idea Board!
A: That's what the arrow above the idea board is for. When you have new ideas
or scoops, select the arrow and press X, and all new photos will be copied
to your Idea Book. Once saved, it's safe to delete the original photo,
because you can never lose Idea Book entries. Donny will give you credit
for scoops on the Idea Board, and you can invent with Idea Board entries,
too. The only time you even need to use the Photo Album is to give them to
characters, copy photos between saved games, or store ones you like.
Q: What does "Common item" mean?
A: It means that the photo is available just about anywhere. For example, no
matter where you are in the game, a Bed, Book, Lamp, or Tree is likely to be
nearby. But if you find something marked "Common item" that you don't think
should be, let me know!
Q: What does "(missable)" mean?
A: It means that the photo is only available at certain points in the game.
Usually, it means it's only available once (such as during boss battles),
but some missable photos give you a few opportunities or are available until
certain events occur.
Note: This does *not* include the cutoff between Chapter 7 and Chapter 8!
The safest way to handle this is to photograph everything you can before
completing Chapter 7, and then enter Chapter 8 with the four photos you need
to complete the final chapter's inventions in your Idea Book (use the
Checklist).
Q: What does "(ghost)" mean?
A: Ghosts are only visible on film. You won't be able to see it, even when
looking through the camera, except when the "flash" is fading, and then only
briefly. Just keep trying, and you should be able to find the ghost and
center it in the camera's cross-hairs.
Q: I missed a scoop! What should I do?
A: You won't get the points for it, and you can't save it to the Idea Board,
but your Photo Album can be used to transfer photos between saved games. If
you have a saved game from before the Scoop, you can go back and get it,
save it to your Album, and then load it back in your regular game. You can
even load an Album from a friend's memory card!
Q: Why do some inventions have two sets of ideas listed?
A: Those inventions can be created two different ways. There doesn't seem to
be any difference, in terms of game play, which you use.
Q: How come some ideas aren't used at all?
A: These photos are exclusively for scoring purposes (see next question).
Q: How do Score and Level work?
A: Your "Score" is a direct representation of the photos you've taken. A scoop
is worth 5 points, and an idea is worth 2. Non-idea photos don't score you
anything. You are awarded a new Level every 100 points, and Donny will
reward you with items when you reach new Levels. Yes, he says he's
rewarding you for scoops, but he's lying ;-)
Here are the rewards we know about:
Level 2 (100 points): Diamond
Level 3 (200 points): Explorer Cap
Level 4 (300 points): Steal Coin
Level 5 (400 points): Explorer Boots
Level 6 (500 points): Explorer Outfit
Level 7 (600 points): Moon Badge
Level 8 (700 points): Sun Badge
There is a total 750 points available in the game, so it's safe to miss a
few photos, but be careful not to miss too many!
Q: What's with the "Overall cost"?
A: The overall cost is what it would cost you to purchase the raw materials to
make the item. Obviously, if you have all or some of the items in your
inventory, it will cost less to make the item. A breakdown of the cost per
item is also given. If there is a ???? in the cost, it means that the
item's cost in a store is unknown.
Q: You have prices listed for coins and gems, but where can I buy them?
A: All the coins and gems used for inventing can be found at Morton's Sundries
(the shop with the pumpkins) in Palm Brinks, but only in Chapter 8.
Q: I have more info! -OR- You're wrong!
A: Well, neither of those are questions, but... ;-)
If you've found an error or just want to submit some missing info, you can
email Dark at <dark-faq@tentacle.net>. He can't always respond to each
email individually, and can't answer questions, but all email *will* be
read, and any valid submissions go into the queue for including in the
Guide.
Q: You used my submission but didn't credit me! -OR- Why didn't you use my
submission?
A: As of version 2.0 of this Guide, Dark had to make a new policy regarding
submissions. We received no less than 40 (!) submissions of the items found
in the Iron House in Veniccio, usually with no other items listed, and
there's simply no way he can credit each and every submitter and still keep
turning out new versions of the Guide on a timely basis.
Submission that aren't added to the Guide are usually omitted for one of
three reasons: 1) I didn't understand your directions; 2) Your info
directly conflicted with another reader's submission or my own info; or 3) I
just didn't have time to put it in this version -- it may still be used in
the next one.
Q: Why don't you have any info on Spheda/fishing/weapons/whatever?
A: Because this is an in-depth guide to photography and inventions. Dark had
originally planned to write additional guides for other aspects of the game,
but since then, more writers have gotten into it and excellent guides
already exist. Specifically:
For Spheda help, check out Lyte's "Side Quests FAQ" (which also contains
good info on a lot of other subjects, and gets better and better with each
update). Completely changed the way I play. Also has the best fishing
location list I've seen.
For fishing and fish-related minigames, diabloDAB and ILuvAlixD's "Fish FAQ"
can't be beat. Not complete yet, though, especially the location list. Use
the "Side Quests FAQ" for locations.
Now that JungleJim's "Weapon FAQ" is complete (or effectively so, at least),
it's definitely the best weapon info available. Lots of charts, details,
and even a nice section on "ultimate" weapons. Valken's charts are also
good as a quick reference.
No one's written a Georama FAQ yet, so the best info is in the Walkthroughs
(even though they aren't complete yet). Dark is considering making a
Georama "cheat sheet"/quick-reference when this FAQ is done, but don't hold
your breath!

* You can invent and even build "Energy Pack (Barrel)" before inventing the
"Energy Pack" that Cedric requests (during the 'camera demo').
* You can increase your photography level to 2 (and earn a Diamond) during the
'camera demo', even through the game restricts you to only a small portion of
Palm Brinks.
* Over forty percent of the photos in the game can be found in Chapter 1.
* Useless photos have a plain white border, Ideas have a faintly glowing
border, and Scoops have a glowing golden border.
* It is possible to invent and build items that can only be used by Monica,
even before she joins your quest.
