_-=-_-=_ SECTION 1: INFO _-=-_-=_-=-_-=_-=_

Hello all, it is I, goldraine. This is my first guide, I will also probably
make a guide for the full English version when it hits stores in November.
When I got this demo disc in issue 35 of SHONEN JUMP, I nearly exploded in
delight. I have been waiting for a decent RPG from Square-Enix since SOTET
I was even going to import before I found out it would be $80 to buy. But,
alas, here we are in the end of September 2005 and I still don't have the
full version. But this demo is enough to last me a month until DQ8 is
actually released here. Actually, I just lied. Once I get Soul Calibur III,
I will play it for an entire month until DQ8 is released. Then I will switch
between them religiously.

DRAGON QUEST VIII, sometimes erroniously referred to as DRAGON WARRIOR VIII,
is the latest game in the ENIX series, DRAGON QUEST. It is also the only one
made on the Playstation 2. In Japan, the DRAGON QUEST series is insanely
popular, about as much as any GUNDAM game. However, it isn't as popular here,
but many people love it.

It was released in Japan as Dragon Quest VIII:
Sora to Daichi to Norowareshi Himegimi on 11/27/04.
In the U.S. release it will be known as Dragon Quest VIII:
Journey of the Cursed King on 11/22/05.

First off, this demo is the very beginning of the game.
The only thing not added is the opening, in which you find out what the hell
is going on. It ends once you return to town after going through the Waterfall
Cave. Also, the Battle Mode is rather interesting. I am unsure if this is on
the original, or just the demo.

Second, This game is HARD! Seriously, if you take DQ8 lightly, you will get
owned. The first time I went up against the boss in Story Mode, he killed me,
bad. If you just got the demo, read the following hints before you resort to
my guide.

_-=-_-=_ SECTION 2: WHERE TO OBTAIN _-=-_-=_
Subscribers of Shonen Jump can get this demo. You can also register at
SQUARE-ENIX's website for a demo, and a free Slime keychain(woot). Lastly,
You can also buy some at stores like Sam Goody and Best Buy. I dunno about
the price. So go get one. Do it now. Do it because I said so. Unless you
have one and a keychain. Then give the keychain to me and run.

_-=-_-=_ SECTION 3: HINTS _-=-_-=_-=-_-=_-=-

If you don't want a direct guide through the demo, but just some help, this the
section you need.

1:)Level up as much as possible. I went through the demo at level 3, and didn't
get far. However, on my second attempt, I went to level 6(Yangus level 6) and
I zipped by the boss.

2:)Stock up on herbs. This was the main reason I died on my first try.
They only cost 8G, and are useful as hell.

3:)If things look too bad, FLEE!!!

4:)Update your equipment when possible.

5:)Allocate your extra points into one skill, e.g. Eight's Sword Skills. It
makes them much stronger.

_-=-_-=_ SECTION 4: STORY MODE GUIDE _-=-_-=

In Story Mode, you start in the first town, Farebury.
From what I can tell about the story, King Trode and his daughter Medea have
been cursed (hence the subtitle, "Journey of the Cursed King"). The main
character, Eight and a Bandit named Yangus are helping the king find the
person who cursed them, named Dhoulmagus.

Your objective in Farebury is to find Rylus, so once your done speaking to
Trode, go hunting. I recommend searching in every building for extra items,
so you have some things to sell for Gold. Don't forget to open up the map
using (SQUARE).

In any case, once inside the Pub, go up the stairs.
There a cutscene will happen between Kalderasha and the bartender, explaining
about Rylus. After the cutscene ends, go to Kalderasha and another one will
begin. After that one ends, go out of the pub. A man is blocking the main way
to the bottom part of the town, so you will have to find another way.
Go left and into the bridge that connects one side of the town to the other,
and go down the stone steps.

Go to through the gate to the group of people for a cutscene.
In this cutscene, the townspeople are trying to scare away Trode because they
think he is monster due to his cursed form. Eight and Yangus along with Trode
and Medea leave town. Trode asks you if you found anything out about Rylus.
Pick yes, and the scene continues. A girl(Valentina) comes out of the town and
asks a favor of you. Since the king is suprised that she looked at him, much
less talk to him, he decides you are to help her.

*sigh*
More running!

Once back inside the town, you must go to the house by the well. It is near
the Pub, so search there. If you are still unsure on it's location, press
(SQUARE) and look for a well. Once there, you find that Valentina is asleep.
Walk up to her and press (X). A cutscene will start. After it's done, go to
the back entrance of the town for another cutscene. Trode tells you to rest
in the Inn. After the scene ends, you start in the Inn. If it is in the evening,
rest again so your in the daytime.

After rested and well stocked on Medicinal Herbs(6-8 will do fine for initial
leveling), go out the main gate.

Once out in the world map, you must go to the Waterfall cave to the south of
Farbury. Instead of going there directly and getting killed(don't worry,
by the way. If your party dies you are revived at a church with full HP/MP),
stay in this area and level up a bit. I warn you, if you go there right now,
you will die.

ENEMIES IN THIS AREA:
Slimes 6-9 HP
Satyrs 11-15 HP
Drackies(evening only) 12 HP
Candy Cats 9 HP
Fire Elementals(evening only) 9 HP
Bunikorn 13 HP
Lips ? HP
NOTE: HPs are estimates only. Don't rely on it too heavily.

I recommend leveling to maybe level 4 before going into the cave. If someone
dies, return to town and resurrect them for 10G. Once you are satisfied with
your level and are fully stocked on herbs, enter the cave.

When you get in the cave, run up the hill to the fork. There is a chest
containing a map to the cave. Once you grab it, you can go the short item-less
way or the longer way with items and equipment, Which ever way you perfer.
Since the demo is short, I say take the long way. When you have everything,
continue going north. Once you come to the passageway, go down it for level B1.

You will come across a monster wielding a hammer. He will ask you if you are
brave enough to fight him. If you answer yes, he will let you through.
Say no, and you will have to ask again.

Once you are past the creature, a slime will be hopping around. Talk to him,
and answer yes for an item at the dead end ahead, a copper sword. Unless you
already bought one, go and obtain it. Otherwise, go to the right and
down the passageway to level B2.

The boss is in this room. Go to the giant waterfall and examine the crystal
ball for a cutscene. After it ends, you are in a fight.

The boss has around 150 HP, and can curse you. The curse only works on Yangus,
as it seems to always miss Eight. The curse only paralyzes you for one turn.
He does a load of damage, about 14, some skills around 20. He also casts
Kafrizzle for 10-14 damage on the party. With constant attacks and frequent
healing, he will go down. If you die, return and challenge him again.

After you beat him, the cutscene continues, and you learn about Eight's past.
You get the Crystal Ball, and then you must return to Farebury. If you have
the Evac spell, use it now. If not, just run out the cave After you are out
of the cave, use a Gryphon Wing if you have any left. Then go to Kalderasha's
house for a cutscene. Afterwards you controld Eight. Go down to the door and
try to open it.

Suddenly...

WHAT! THE END!!! NOOOOO!!! You have beaten the demo of DRAGON QUEST VIII!
Feel happy, and then do it again.

_-=-_-=_ SECTION 5: BATTLE MODE INFO _-=-_-=

In Battle Mode, you have the 4 characters in your party. I haven't really
found any significance in this except for the fact that it allows you to
play the awesome battle system with every character and different abilities.
It also allows you to see for yourself the nonexistent load times. About 1
second is the longest I waited on a new-type PS2. Since there isn't much
to say about this mode, I'll leave it to you to try it out.

_-=-_-=_ SECTION 6: HOW YOU CAN HELP _-=-_-=
I added this sections because I know I suck at writing in general. These are
only for people who have a lot of free time on thier hands, and don't mind
not getting paid for thier hard, but appreciated work. So here are some ways
you can help me:

Revising and Grammar-Nazi. Being my first FAQ/GUIDE, I need a dedicated one.
Though I won't make many FAQs, mainly because of School and Chores, I need
someone who is good at Grammar-Nazi-ing. Please e-mail or AIM me first if
you decide to do so.

Adding things not mentioned. Please note you are to e-mail or AIM the
information, not edit directly.

Thats all I can think of right now. If you send me info or decide to revise
or Grammar-Nazi one of my FAQs, You will be added to the credits and
appreciated.
