This is a FAQ of (]=-The@N-=[), known as TheaN on Gamefaqs messageboards.
My real name is Arno Middelkoop and I'm from the Netherlands. Look in the

on my black list. That was my introduction, on to the subject of this FAQ:

The .hack series are well known series throughout anime-game fans, and in rare
occasions game-only fans. The .hack game series offer a sequel on .hack//SIGN,
a two-season featured anime series about a modern MMORPG called 'The World'. In
the games, you play in that same world, continuing the story from the anime.
The games consist of four games, and each will need a different! FAQ for the
PG. They are too different to put it in one FAQ. I will make several notices of
that.
I decided to create a PG FAQ almost a year ago, however, to get it myself I had
to replay; and at that time I wasn't really happy with that (I just completed
them). Now, I am replaying and doing anything I didn't do at that time. Rules

4.0 Outbreak Fixed Events

In Mutation, a lot of the same occurs as in Infection, and I removed those.
These include the optional quests and random secrets; they are back in Mutation
without true changes. I did keep the Goblin Tag, to explain something special
about it. The next events, are different.

4.1 Goblin Tag T
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
They are back again, with TRIPLE the fun (X_X):
- The Goblins are now named: '*name* T'. T is for turbo, gob!
- The armors are now named: '*name* S'. They changed the same as they did in
Mutation, so they are still worthless armors. I'm starting to see a pattern
in name though: A is advanced, S is super. Who cares, really.
- The Key Item is now called Imp's Cross.
Strategy: for the first three; just run like hell and use Saber Dance or
something on one and hope you kill him before they heal him back to shape. The
less there are, the easier it becomes. Albert is easier, as they don't heal.
Just break through the Rom magic and kill them one by one. Martina can be done
by Sleep and Magic Defence Down: use Lanceor Ch for the best effect. Focus on
one, as they heal with Ol Repth this time.

4.2 .hack//SIGN Phantom Quest
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The Phantom Quest of Outbreak is a follow-up, literally, of the scenes in
Mutation. If you somehow didn't watch the scenes, you won't be able to do the
Phantom Quest.
What is the Phantom Quest? Simple XD. The nine most famous characters of SIGN
will 'walk' in Root Towns as ghost characters one by one. If you talk to them,
you'll get a quote from the series (voices are the same), that particular
character will disappear from that location and you'll get an item. You'll
encounter one character, after which you'll encounter him/her again five times
at different locations before you'll find another character. Thus you'll
encounter each of the characters six times, with nine character this makes 54
encounters.
You'll encounter these character in this order: Mimiru, BT, Bear, Sora, Crim,
Silver Knight, A-20, Subaru and Tsukasa. The items are fixed, at least the
first five are (per character). These are:
1st encounter: Healing Elixir (full HP for one character/regular in Quarantine)
2nd encounter: Emperor's Soul (full SP for one character/regular in Quarantine)
3rd encounter: Noble Wine (HP/SP full for one chacter/regular in Quarantine)
4rd encounter: Energy Sutras (+15 MAX HP for one character/phantom quest only!)
5th encounter: Spirit Sutras (+5 MAX SP for one character/phantom quest only!)
You'll get these items nine times, which means the total Energy and Spirit
Sutras is limited to 9 each. These are considered rare items and should be
stored: it is best to do the Phantom Quest at once, so that you'll have these
5 items when you get to a new character. It avoids to keep selling or storing
things during the quest.
The 6th encounter is different for all nine characters, although three give you
a Golden Grunty and three give you a Silver Grunty. Three others will give
their weapon. The grunties were rare on its own, and the weapons are rare as
well. Store all these nine items. It's in this order:
Mimiru: Golden Grunty.
BT: BT's wand.
Bear: Silver Grunty.
Sora: Golden Grunty.
Crim: Silver Grunty.
Silver Knight: SK's Sword.
A-20: Golden Grunty.
Subaru: Silver Grunty.
Tsukasa: Tsukasa's Wand.
How will I mention these in the checklist? For Energy and Spirit Sutras it is:
Phantom Quest 4rd/5th Encounters, nothing more. For the last encounters:
SK's Sword: Phantom Quest Silver Knight (and so for the others respectively).
You'll get, as with the SIGN scenes, something extra. Upon encoutering Mimiru
the first time, you'll get Image 50. On this image, you see the nine chracters
blacked out. When you complete a certain character, that chracter will be fully
viewed. Complete the Quest, and the image is complete. I won't mention this
image in the Checklist, as it is part of the Quest.

4.3 Random secrets 2

Although regular enough to be left out in the Mutation FAQ, so extended this
section is in Outbreak. So far, every game had three secret areas, with one or
two items. Outbreak has 8 areas, and ALL have two rare items.
It's not too hard though: each area has one rare trade item. To find all the
areas, just look for the treasure section in the checklist and check every area
that's stated there. The Gott Statues have the treasure items, so you don't
have to search for these specifically.
As second item, five areas combined have the Ladies Set, two areas have an
extra Twin Blade weapon and one area has two semi-story related scenes. Thus
make sure to check every last B, as they all have something extra.

4.4 Ladies Set
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
AS mentioned above, five areas make the ladies set. Conclusive, this set is a
weapon-included rare set. Because of that, this set only applies to Twin Blade.
However, this is not that lucrative; why? As we know from complete sets (Time),
they don't carry a special feature when you equip them all.
The Ladies Set's specialty is Status Ailments:
Lady's Cap: Pha Repth, Suvi Lei.
Lady's Mail: Miu Lei, Mumyn Lei.
Lady's Gloves: Ranki Lei, Maj Lei.
Lady's Boots: Dek Do, Duk Lei.
As you see, with the exception of Pha Repth (which is not bad at all), all
seven status ailments are included in this set. I didn't add the Killers
(weapon), as it doesn't carry ailments. In addition, the blades have status
boosts: Ap Do and Rig Geam, with Tiger Claws as attacking reserve.
Even though the abilities are pretty useful (especially for the Killers and the
Mail), the stats are not good enough. Or it's vice-versa (Gloves), where the
abilities don't match the stats. Overall, neither of this set is actually
useful. Look for yourself if you want to use the Mail or Killers, I'd not
recommend it.

This is because not 2, but 10 characters carry rare equipment with them now.
Those items with a regular amount of 79 now have 36: 79 - 43 (25+18) = 36.
The items that needed 54 now only lose their elemental statbook: 54 - 18 =
36 also. The distribution of items<->NPCs<->amounts remains the same.
** As mentioned, 10 characters have the rare item<>rare equipment trades. 2
have not (the Axes NPCs will never carry rare equipment). These two NPCs
(Jutah/John) have a third armor in their list. You might guess: Jutah is of
the Fire element and needs 12 Burning Oil for it, plus 6 of the opposite,
Pure Water. John is of the Darkness element and needs 12 Cooked Bile for it,
plus 6 of the opposite, Sports Drink. Thus 42 and 48.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE
===================
You can now trade elemental items!!! Wiseman has 6 of all, and BR has 3 of
Cooked Bile, Sports Drink and Holy Sap. Although you can only trade once, the
amount you need to find will decrease by almost 1/5 (252-45=207 207/256=~0.81).

The Maxed Affection bug is in effect here, even though you will only get the
emailchains after the Piros dungeon (exceptions are Terijima/Balmung, WATCH IT)
You can give all characters (except for Balmung and Terijima, again) everything
you want, as you'll get the first mails of everyone anyway once you're able to.

4.7 Full Elf's Haven PART 1

Uh-oh. What was the most feared effect of keeping all rare items now came
through: the almighty Haven will fill up after gaining all optional DD weapons
and treasures. To be precize, without taking any of the rare items in your
equipment or inventory, you will gain an amount of 109 rare items and
equipment. We'll have to discard 10 items and the end of the game, and
prefferably a bit more, so there is something to be stored in Quarantine. Next
I'll state what items you should equip, keep or use to make space. I'll explain
after it.
An extra note regarding DD weapons: you can both have AND store them. This
section is based on BOTH cases, as the main rule is: getting a rare itemn is
storing. There are alternatives for those items: no harm done.

The weapons speak for themselfs: Fire/Wood/Darkness/Non-elemental respectively,
playing most efficiently. The armors are rather eccentrick: Lady's Mail for
good abilities Time Sandals for Ap Do (I've never taken it off since I got it).
As for the items: in Infection, I give as main reason to keep the items that
there's no way to keep track. After whole Outbreak, this should be the total
amount of these items you'll ever be able to get, with the exception of
Forestlore, which is actually not a rare item :) (you can get those elemental
items from Gott Statues after Quarantine; I put it down as rare first, as it is
rare the moment you get it). As for the Sutras: they are Phantom Quest
specific only, so use them after you've completed the entire quest. A second
reason is that elemental parameters can be maxed after Quarantine anyway: other
statboosts might want a different destinataion (i.e parameter already maxed at
Lv99).
5 spaces to store; the Quest's Noble Wine, G/S Axes or elemental items are
options. Of course, if needed, you could also store items of the above list
that you don't use (Lady's Mail/Time Sandals might be possibilities)).
