Japanese FAQ - PLEASE READ!!!
-----------------------------

2001's Ghosts & Goblins update was a shining success. Maximo: Ghosts
to Glory was a hit both in Japan and on US shores, though the latter
came with much criticism of the difficulty. I wrote a FAQ for the
first game based on the Japanese version and here I am again. In this
case, there is even more Japanese in the game, both in menus and
gameplay, however all the cut-scenes have English voice-overs, and they
     are done quite well actually!

In any event, this FAQ is solely based on the Japanese version and
should assist in translating and getting through the game. Good luck,
and as always, learn your Katakana!!!

FINAL NOTE

This FAQ is obviously under construction and I will be
adding information as I learn it. Feel free to contact me at the
address above if you have something to add. I'll give credit wherever
     it is due!

On Screen Items:
---------------

During gameplay, there are several items on screen. Here's what they do.

Green Bars = Energy
       1 Bar = Boxer shorts
      2 Bars = Basic armor
      3 Bars = Full armor (w/ helmet)
4 Bars = Gold Armor (only when wearing Armor Boxers)

Red Bar = Magic/Shield Power (decreases when you throw/perform moves)
Refills by collecting Yellow & Black Shield icon or
               defeating enemies.

Blue Circle = Grim Meter. Press L1 + R1 to change into Death (Grim Reaper) and
control him for a brief time. With the Grim Upgrade, you can
add more bars to this meter. You begin with one, but can upgrade
               to 4.

Red Coins = Lives. Unlike the first game where they were continues.
Spirits = What's the purpose of spirits?
Coins        = Purchase Upgrades/Items
Iron Keys = Open chests

Combos & Attacks:
----------------

Combat is the main focus of the game and the gameplay engine in which this
is put together is elaborate and exciting.

A fun addition to the game engine is the ability to string together
numerous hits to make big combos. Here are some combinations.

Sword Combos:

Sq, Sq, neutral + Sq
Sq, Sq, direction + Sq
Sq, Sq, T, Sq, Sq
T, Sq, Sq
Dir + T
Sq, Dir + Sq

I'm unsure of all of these, I will need to verify.

Based on how many hits AND how many enemies you hit, combos are rated:

    Weak
    Bold
    Fearsome
    Brave

More as I figure it all out.

              B: ITEM PICKUPS
              =================

There are a number of items dropped by enemies or floating around the level.
They are as follows:

Coins:
These are integral as you will use these to purchase upgrades and
items. As you save villagers, you will find some people trying
to sell items. For a list of what they're selling, see below.

Coin Bags:
Money bags are worth 5 coins each.

Death Coins (Desu Koin) 210 coins
Red coins are used for lives in the sequel whereas they were
continues in the first. Many times strewn about the level in
     hard to access areas.

Diamonds:
These are worth 10 coins each. Watch out as birds will steal
     diamonds from you!

Red Key
These keys attach to your belt (or boxers) and will open up chests
     and most doors/gates.

Gold Key:
These will open up the bigger gates with a gold lock.

Health Tankard (Herusu Tanka) 40 coins
These look like mugs and give you energy.

Yellow & Black Shield:
Pick up these power-ups to refill your shield/magic meter.

              D: POWER-UPS
              ==============

One of the coolest elements in the first Maximo was the ability to
enhance your sword and shield with power-ups. This feature has been
tweaked and refined for the sequel.

By pressing the Select button, you will bring up your power-up menu.
This is broken into 4 sections:

     Sword
     Hammer
     Shield
     Boxers (Panshi)

Beside these icons there are 2 colored circles.

Items in the red circles are upgrades and can be swapped with
     the main item.

Items in the brown circles are power-ups. These give you special
techniques, but some drain your magic meter, so watch out for that.

Virtually all of these power-ups must be purchased from villagers. Most
are pretty easy to figure out, but I've translated their names where
possible.

Sword Power-Ups
---------------

Wide (wild?) Spinning Sword Wairudo Supiningu Soodo
                                                                ??? Coins

Perform a 360 on the analog controller + square for a much larger
attack radius and extra blades appear to assist.

Critical Sword Kuriteikaru Soodo
                                                                ??? Coins

Otherwise considered a Sword Stab, press Up + Triangle to perform a
forward stab w/ your sword. This is a powerful and very useful
     attack.

Super Sword Stab Suupaa Kuriteiharu Soodo
                                                                600 Coins

A very useful enhanced version of the Sword Stab. This will take
power away from your magic meter, but your attack will go further
and will do more damage. Be careful though, it takes a little
longer to perform this attack, leaving yourself open for enemies to
     hit you.

Shock Wave Attack Shyoku Ueibu Atakku
                                                               780 Coins

An incredibly useful move, this expands your Sword Stab move. The
way to perform this is by presing X, X, T, T. The ring around your
character is bigger and now contains blades. Use this when
surrounded and you can kill a number of enemies in one attack!

Flame Sword Fureimu Soodo
                                                               can't buy

This is an upgrade in the later levels. You cannot purchase this
item, it is given to you. It's effects won't seem obvious to you
until you do a Sword Stab or Spinning Sword attack as these now
gain the assistance of fire and cause more damage.

Fire Doom Strike Fuaia Doumu Sutoraiku
                                                              1010 Coins

This powerup is impressive and causes a lot of damage. To perform
this move, tap X, X, T, Sq. This is just like the Shock Wave Attack,
but a huge ring of fire surrounds you.

Take notice, this drains a LOT out of your magic meter. It's a
very powerful move, but use it sparingly.

Hammer Power-Ups
----------------

Wide (wild?) Spinning Hammer Wairudo Supiningu Hanma
                                                               460 Coins

Much like the Wide Spinning Sword, this enhances your spinning
     attack and is very useful.

Drill Hammer Doriru Hanma
                                                               310 Coins

Press Up + Triangle (?) to perform this attack. Maximo will
perform a move similar to the sword stab, but will also spin the
Hammer which can cause multiple hits.

Ice Hammer Aisu Hanma?
                                                               can't buy

Quake Strike Kuueiku Sutoraiku
                                                               880 Coins

Super Drill Hammer Suupaa Doriru Hanma
                                                               680 Coins

Ice Doom Strike Aisu Doumo Sutoraiku
                                                              1160 Coins

Shield Power-Ups
----------------

Iron Shield Aaion Shiredo
                                                               ??? Coins

I think this is a different shield.

Snatch Shield Sunachi Shiredo
                                                               360 Coins

When equipped with this power-up, you can collect items from a
distance by holding the block (R2) button. Coins and similar
items will be drawn to you. I believe this works when used in
conjunction with the Shield Toss (circle). Items such as armor,
health tankards, keys and red coins will not be affected by this.

However, this is a very useful tool. Since collecting coins is
such an integral part of the game, you can utilize this even
during heavy battles or when surrounded. In addition, it allows
you to collect coins in hard to reach locations (i.e. ones in
which you need to perform daring jumps.)

Super Shield Shot Suupaa Shiiredo Shyoto
Type: Upgrade 400 Coins
                  3 arrows pointing northwest.

This upgrade lets you throw your shield REALLY far. It will fly half
the stage and can bounce between enemies.

Silver Shield Shirubaa Shiiredo
                                                               470 Coins

Spark Shield Supaaku Shiredo
                                                               700 Coins

Bound? Shield Baundo Shiredo
                                                               800 Coins

What does this do? Press circle? Reflects?

Gold Shield Goorudo Shiredo
                                                               910 Coins

     A more powerful shield?

Boxer Upgrades
--------------

Heart Boxers Haato Panshi
                                                                 Default

The boxers you're wearing when you start. They offer no benefits
     to my knowledge.

Armor Pants Aamaa Panshi
                                                               120 Coins
                       Boxers that look like Armor

These only help you gain a 4th level of armor. Put these on prior
to opening treasure chests. If you have 3 energy levels and armor
is inside, you will be rewarded with the 4th level/Gold Armor. See
     more above.

?? Shiifu Panshi
                                                               410 Coins
                     Green Boxers w/ Dollar Signs

These boxers will give you a warning around hidden treasure
chests. Red text will appear on the bottom of the screen
and the controller will rumble. Look around for hidden items.
The controller will rumble harder when you are closer.

     something w/ square button?

Magic Power Boxers Majikku Pawaa Panshi
                                                              540 Coins
                           Blue Boxers w/....

With these boxers your special meter grows more quickly

Life Boxers Raifu Panshi
                                                              620 Coins

If you have no armor on, these make your special meter grow.

Scrolls
-------

By pressing the R1 button on this screen you will be presented with the
scrolls you have collected.

There are 30 Scrolls in total.

These scrolls give you gameplay tips and do not seem to serve any other
function or purpose.

              ====================
              E: BOSS STRATEGIES
              ====================

As with the first Maximo game, there is one tip that is universal
when talking about boss strategies. I will say it here, probably
again in each boss description, but I cannot emphasize it enough.

                  KEEP MOVING

That's a basic concept but will save you in almost every instance
of a boss attack. Some bosses in the first game had you just
running constantly. That's fine! Sitting still will often mean
death, so keep running around, in circles if you must!

1st Boss - House Crusher

After several levels you are presented with the first boss, the
House Crusher. This bird-beast in a house has 2 attacks and you
should be able to avoid them if you keep moving.

At first, he'll poke his head out the front door and it's your
job to rush up to him and slash at his head. Spinning combinations
will hit several times and prove to be very useful.

When the bird retracts his head back into the house, he will
proceed to run at you. Once again, keep moving away from him and
move/jump out of the way once he reaches you. Eventually he'll stop
and poke his head out again.

Once you've defeated the bird, he will destroy the house revealing
his 2 guns. Keep running as he shoots at you. You can run towards
him, leaping over his bullet fire. Every so often he will jump high
in the air and you must dodge his shots again. He will keep doing
this, so in evading his shots, running towards him is the best way
    to attack.

Mix up your attacks on his head and eventually he will fall.

Much like the bosses from the first game, staying in motion is key.
By sitting still, he'll accurately shoot at you with his guns or
    run into you.

2nd Boss - Cyclocks

This huge beast smashes the house where you're located and has
several attacks. However, you may be able to avoid most of them
if you time your attack properly. When the eye is opening up
you can jump and slash a few times knocking the boss back. By
timing it correctly, he might not even get an attack off!

It's likely that he will though, so it's good to be prepared.
Watch out for his blue wave attack, jump over them and rush to
the front to slice at the eye. His other attack is a laser beam
    that follows you around.

Once you've done some damage, he'll move to either side of the
house. Keep up your attacks. You should be able to get 3 hits
almost every time, try jumping and hitting Square, Square, Triangle.

Eventually he'll destroy the whole house and you'll continue the
engagement in the yard. No big surprise here, KEEP MOVING. His
laser attack follows you around and his missiles will seek you out.
In both cases, run to the left or right of him, then towards him.
Otherwise you'll just keep running forever. Attack the eye, wait
for it to close and run away. Repeat until death.

3rd Boss - Boa Beetle?

4th Boss - Sea Serpent

This guy can be a little annoying. A huge serpent smashes through
the floorboards and as with any other platformer boss, he has
several different attacks and a pattern of sorts.

The first time he pops up, run straight up to him and hack away.
He'll move his head back and get ready for him to swipe at you.
You can try running away but you might not make it quickly enough
    so just try to block.

The snake will drop back into the water and then reappear, breaking
another floor block. His other attacks include fire breathing (run!
and if you can't, block) and some green poisonous gas. Just avoid
these as you'll get hit multiple times if you are in the middle of
    them.

You do have limited time in that the floorboards are being broken
as you go along. Do your best at avoiding those 2 attacks while
remaining close enough to get several hits. I recommend using the
jump + square + square + triangle combo myself, then maybe a
spinning attack. You should be able to get a few hits in every
    brief encounter.

Final Boss -

              =============
              F: MISC ITEMS
              =============

Secrets:
-------

In order to Master a level, you must collect all the coins,
defeat every enemy and find all the hidden items in a level.
Many times you will reveal a hidden treaure chest by doing a
Sword Stab (down + triangle after jumping) or just by jumping
    near it.

Until you get the Shiifu Boxers, you will be blind to these
hidden items. Once you put on these shorts you can reveal
their locations by walking near them. As mentioned above,
the controller will rumble harder when you are very close.

Take note though, sometimes these hidden chests are placed in
strategic areas. If you enter a level and see an odd patch
of ground that is empty, try doing the Sword Stab there.
Many times these obvious locations contain chests!

Useful Tips:
------------

During Boss battles, KEEP MOVING. Most of their attacks will
focus on a centralized location, so by keeping yourself in motion,
you can avoid most boss attacks.

If you can't get to an item that is just out of reach, try
swinging your sword. You can collect items that are out of your
reach by hitting them w/ your sword/hammer! Very useful.

Don't waste keys. If you die on a level, don't unlock a treasure
chest again the 2nd time through. Whatever was inside the first
time will be reduced to a single coin. This goes for regular
chests as well. Keys however will always be in chests.

How do I save?
-------------

As with the first game, you will have to beat the first
     level first.

You will then be presented with an overworld map. Much easier
than the original game, simply press the R1 button to access the
save screen. It does not cost any coins as in the first game.
Once you're in the save screen, hit the circle button once to say
save, a 2nd time to confirm.

In addition, by Mastering certain levels, you can unlock entries
in the gallery. Hit the L1 button to access this menu.
