I've had to re-write this intro because Namco has gone and done the seemingly
unthinkable: released this game in North America. I didn't think it'd be done,
but the more people who get a shot at this amazing game the better. Not only
that, the boxart has been left alone, the music has been left alone, and it's
being released at the low price of US$20. You have no excuse not to buy it.
Even if you've already shelled out the cash for the import, buy this one too.
Show your support in games that have actual innovation put into them.
Namco really did it this time. The whole package is just incredible. The
gameplay is simple, intuitive and just straight out fun. It's one of those
games you just pick up and go. I play it when I need to relax, I play it when
I need to vent my frustrations, it's all around great.
You roll a ball around picking stuff up with it. Roll over a battery, it
sticks. Roll over a dog, it sticks. Roll over a giant squid, it sticks too.
Someone asked me how you play and I told him. He replied with "that's it?"
Yeah, that's it. And it's awesome.

1. Controls
===========
Although the controls are pretty intuitive and you go through a tutorial
every time you start a new game, the controls are given below for the sake
of completeness. All directions are given as U (up), D (down), L (left),
R (right), and then UL and UR for diagonals. The movement is all performed
using the analog sticks.
Normal Game

Prince
------
Only son of the great king of the cosmos.
Has the heart as pure as an untouched field of snow.
Does not know how to turn down a request.
Has a strong feeling of independance, so he lives alone on Prince Star.
He's a little afraid of his father's strictness, but he admires him greatly.
Height: 5cm
King
----
Great king of the cosmos.
His best article of clothing is his female lion belt buckle.
Because you don't hunt male lions, you hunt the females.
His mantle has the design of a four-leaf lucky clover.
When he was drunk, he destroyed the starry sky. This is how this story began.

Queen
-----
The prince's kind mother.
She tends to dream, but she is also well grounded.
Her favourite food is gratin. She always carries it around.
She has a loving marriage with King.
Height: Bigger than Prince, smaller than King.
Hoshiya Mutsuo

The Hoshiya family's eldest son.
He is a very ordinary grade school student.
His favourite subject is ethics.
Hoshiya Michiru

Mutsuo's sister.
She usually has a very quiet personality.
With the exception of occasionally feeling the cosmos, she is a very normal
girl.
Hoshiya Mizue

Mutsuo and Michiru's mother.
She has no interest in people have to say.
Her hobby is domestic travel.
Hoshiya Tomuo

Mutsuo and Michiru's father.
He is the primary supporter of the Hoshiya family.
He is an astronaut by nature.
Currently he is being transferred alone to the space centre.

3. Game Modes
=============
When you start the game, you will see there are three options available to
you by using the L1 and R1 buttons to switch between locations. They are
the Prince Star (where you do settings, etc.), the Earth (level select), and
the Mushroom (versus mode). L2 and R2 will transport you faster than L1/R1.
Prince Star
-----------
There are six options available from the Prince Star:
House (Data) - Save and load your game here.
Tree (Item Collection) - View items you've picked up (more in section 4).
Star (View Stars) - Take a look at the stars and constellations you've made.
Present (Presents) - View and equip the different presents you've found.
Gramophone (Sound) - Change the sound to either stereo or monaural.
Bird (Vibration) - Turn vibration on and off.
Earth
-----
Use the Earth for selecting levels. They consist of "Make a Star" levels 1-9
and constellation levels. Below is the kana/translation for each. Some of the
constellation stages require more than just getting your ball bigger, so a
description of how to beat those is listed as well.
Make a Star 1 - get the ball from 5cm to 10cm in 3 minutes
Make a Star 2 - get the ball from 5cm to 20cm in 6 minutes
Make a Star 3 - get the ball from 10cm to 50cm in 8 minutes
Make a Star 4 - get the ball from 5cm to 1m in 10 minutes
Make a Star 5 - get the ball from 10cm to 1.5m in 12 minutes
Make a Star 6 - get the ball from 50cm to 3m in 10 minutes
Make a Star 7 - get the ball from 50cm to 6m in 10 minutes
Make a Star 8 - get the ball from 10cm to 12m in 18 minutes
Make a Star 9 - get the ball from 50cm to 30m in 18 minutes
Make the Moon - get the ball from 1m to 300m in 25 minutes
Cancer - pick up as many crabs you can in 5 minutes (133 total)
Cygnus - pick up as many swans you can in 6 minutes (71 total)
Corona Borealis - pick up as many crowns you can in 8 minutes (107 total)
Pisces - pick up as many fish you can in 5 minutes (174 total)
Virgo - pick up as many females you can in 10 minutes (199 total)
Ursa Major - pick up the largest bear you can find in 10 minutes
Gemini - pick up as many pairs of items you can in 10 minutes (109 total)
Taurus - pick up the largest cow you can find in 10 minutes
Polaris - roll up the ball to what you think is 10m, then hit square
Ending - pick up countries for as long as the credits roll (195 total)
There are also three different areas to play without time a limit called
"Eternal" stages. Please keep in mind you need to have finished the game
before they open up. You can unlock them in the following ways:
Eternal 1 - Build up the ball past 1m30cm in Make a Star 4
Eternal 2 - Build up the ball past 25m in Make a Star 8
Eternal 3 - Build up the ball past 800m in Make the Moon
If you hit triangle at the Earth once you've beaten all of the levels (minus
the Eternal stages), you can watch the movies all again and you get a sound
test for all the music in the game. Excellent, excellent bonus, considering
the music is so awesome.
On top of this, if you can speed clear the stages you will get a shooting
star to view in the View Stars mode. To view these stars, simply enter
View Stars mode and press the button associated with that level. For example,
if you press L1, the shooting star for Make a Star 1 will fly across the sky.
Listed below is the required time for each stage and the button to press to
see the star:
Make a Star 1 - 1 minute (L1)
Make a Star 2 - 3 minutes (R1)
Make a Star 3 - 4 minutes (L2)
Make a Star 4 - 6 minutes (R2)
Make a Star 5 - 8 minutes (up)
Make a Star 6 - 8 minutes (triangle)
Make a Star 7 - 8 minutes (left)
Make a Star 8 - 12 minutes (square)
Make a Star 8 - 15 minutes (down)
Make the Moon - 20 minutes (right)
Mushroom
--------
The mushroom is where you go when you want to do versus battles with a friend.
Each of you chooses your character and then battle it out to see who can get
the biggest ball in the given time.
You can unlock different characters for the versus battles in the main game.
A list of the characters and where to find each one is listed in the next
section of this guide.

4. Versus/Cousins
=================
The list below gives the name of each of the Prince's cousins you can use
in versus mode and the specific location of where to find them in the game.
I'm not exactly sure how they unlock, I used to think you had to collect
them in levels but now I'm sure this isn't the case. Either way, you can
tell whether you've gotten them all or not from the ending when it shows
them all holding hands in a circle on the mushroom. If there are some
missing, there will be spaces where they should be holding hands.
Marche
Description: Split in the middle with light and dark purple.
How to unlock: Initially available.
Where to find: Make a Star 1 - Under the table.
Havana
Description: Red guy with a croquet mallet head.
How to unlock: Clear Make a Star 2.
Where to find: Make a Star 2 - Running with the mice.
Jungle
Description: Wears jungle camo.
How to unlock: Clear Make a Star 3.
Where to find: Make a Star 3 - When you get to the area off the road with
a lot of plastic bottles, look left to the hill. He'll be
running up and down the road and he's hard to miss, he has
a big 'here' sign pointing to him. It might take a minute
for him to show up, be patient. You can pick the sign up
seperately as well, so make sure you get HIM too.
Johnson
Description: Green guy, looks kind of like the Prince.
How to unlock: Clear Make a Star 4.
Where to find: Make a Star 4 - On the roof of the house.
Nick
Description: Fat yellow guy with horns.
How to unlock: Unlock Eternal 1.
Where to find: Eternal 1 - Looking for a snack in the refrigerator.
Honey
Description: Pink with a dumbell for a head.
How to unlock: Clear Make a Star 5.
Where to find: Make a Star 5 - Floating in an inner tube in the river.
She shows up on the far side of the river, and make sure
you've completed the requirement for the stage (1.5m)
because she's pretty big.
Nickel
Description: Grey, looks like steel and bolts.
How to unlock: Clear Make a Star 6.
Where to find: Make a Star 6 - Running alongside the fishermen by the sea
next to the town.
Miso
Description: Red with a cup head.
How to unlock: Clear Make a Star 7.
Where to find: Make a Star 7 - Riding on the back of a cow with a blonde
guy near the start of the level.
Shikao
Description: Orange TV head.
How to unlock: Clear Make a Star 8.
Where to find: Make a Star 8 - Just past the 1.5m barrier you can find a
truck carrying a bunch of TVs driving clockwise around the
town, Shikao is running (just behind) after this truck.
Jun
Description: White with blue polka dots.
How to unlock: Initially available.
Where to find: Eternal 2 - Just past the 1.5m barrier in exactly the
same location as Shikao (behind the TV truck).
Velvet
Description: Purple girl with no legs (she hovers).
How to unlock: Clear Make a Star 9.
Where to find: Make a Star 9 - In the middle of the schoolyard.
Dip
Description: Black with multicoloured disco lights.
How to unlock: Clear Make the Moon.
Where to find: Make the Moon - In the middle of the schoolyard hiding
behind the podium.
Ace
Description: Orange with yellow cones on the side of his head.
How to unlock: Initially available.
Where to find: Eternal 3 - Beside the tree in the middle of the pond beside
the starting town (practically go straight from the start).
Kuro
Description: Black suit with red trim.
How to unlock: Initially available.
Where to find: Gemini - Riding on one of the boards of one of the swimmers
in same pond you found Ace.
Fuumin
Description: Aqua colour with two smokestacks on his head.
How to unlock: Clear Gemini.
Where to find: Gemini - Literally planted in the farmer's field in the town.
Beso
Description: Grey guy with a round head and red detail.
How to unlock: Clear Corona Borealis.
Where to find: Corona Borealis - In front of the blowfish restaurant in the
shopping district. If you go down the hill and follow straight
down the main shopping part, you can't miss him.
Lalala
Description: She's naked!
How to unlock: Clear Cancer.
Where to find: Cancer - Inside the doghouse to the right of when you exit the
house. She's small, so go early. If you can't see her just ram
the entrance, you'll pick her up.
Mahn
Description: Yellow tennis ball.
How to unlock: Clear Pisces.
Where to find: Pisces - Having a swim in the pond. If you go a little left and
straight ahead towards the pond when you start you'll see him.
Opeo
Description: Grey with a blue face (maybe he's a robot!).
How to unlock: Clear Taurus.
Where to find: Taurus - At the far corner on the roof of the school.
Columbo
Description: Kind of purple and black. Weird colour.
How to unlock: Clear Ursa Major.
Where to find: Ursa Major - On the back of an elephant at the gas station.
Odeko
Description: Tall, skinny purple guy.
How to unlock: Clear Cygnus.
Where to find: Cygnus - First drop down from the roof and get outside. Facing
the entrance to the house, look to the right side to see an
orange seat cushion. Roll up that and onto the statue 'lift'
that will take you up to the roof again, only a different part.
He's kind of hooked onto the edge. It's possible to grab the
hook and have him fall, in that case just drop down and pick
him up from the ground.
Strawberry
Description: Strawberry (red with white specks)
How to unlock: Clear Virgo.
Where to find: Virgo - On the beauty contest stage at the side of the pond.
Fujio
Description: Blue with a conehead.
How to unlock: Clear Polaris.
Where to find: Polaris - On top of the greenhouse beside the farm in town.

5. Presents
===========
Below is the list of presents and where to find them. The first column tells
which stage they are found, then the item, then the exact location within that
level. Keep in mind that you must also complete the level to keep the present.
Stage 2 Winter Scarf Go outside of the house. The present
should be near the Christmas Tree.
Stage 3 Chef's Hat Whack the tree with the swing when you are
about 30cm round. A present should fall
out, but you need to be about 50cm before
you can pick it up.
Stage 4 Championship Belt Roll out of the house and around the
corner past the 20cm barrier. Go into the
back of the house and into the kitchen,
the present is sitting up on the kitchen
table. You need to be ~30cm to get up on
the table and about 50cm to pick it up.
Stage 5 Camera Build up to 45cm to get past the barrier
leading down to the shopping district.
After going down the hill, take a right
around the corner and up a green mesh
fence. At the end on the roof is a ramp
you need to launch yourself off of in
order to hit a crow to make him drop
the present (* see note below).
Stage 6 Headphones In the schoolyard up behind the gas
station, it's floating from a balloon
behind the jungle gym near the circle of
students.
Stage 7 Apron Build up enough to get up to the
schoolyard. The present falls with the
rest of the boulders and junk in the
looping order of rock, rock, rock,
washing machine, tractor, car, dump truck,
rock, sumo wrestler, present.
Stage 8 White Guitar The present is rolling along behind a red
jeep driving counter clockwise around the
streets past the 1.5m barrier.
Stage 9 Aloha Set Build up enough to get past the school
and up to the second town. In the middle
of the buildings there's a factory with
two smoke stacks. This sounds crazy, but
run up the ladder of the stack farthest
from where you came. It's at the top of
the chimney. Do it as soon as you get to
the second town or you might get too big
to get it.
Moon Cool Mask Build up enough to get past the 12m
barrier at the school and head to the
port area with the boats and squids.
The red robot "Tobe! Jumboman" flies
around there with the present in his
hands. The best way I've found is to
get on to the cliff below the satellite
to the right of where you come into the
docks from the town. When he flies by,
dash off and hit him in the hands.
Cygnus Duck-chan First collect some of the eggs in the
attic so you have enough to get it. Go
down the ramp by the cones, it's on a
ledge to the right before going through
the little window.
Corona Crown Go down the hill and head left toward
Borealis the guys in suits. Continue down the
steps in front of them until you see the
stream. Head left under the little
bridge and it should be on the left
being stared at by some chickens.
Virgo Tanktop Head out to the beach. You should be able
to see the present on top of one of the
beach umbrellas near the water. You'll
need to build up a little bit before you
can roll yourself up on top of it.
Ursa Major Hero Scarf There's a guy floating around the roads
from a balloon, he's holding the present.
You need to build up a bit in order to
reach his height, 2m should be great.
Taurus Sumo Loincloth Build up the ball to 2m then get up onto
the roof of the school just to the right
of where you started. You need to be
bigger than the 1m starting size in order
to reach it. Launch yourself off of the
ramp and into the present floating from
a balloon. If you're big enough, you can
just launch yourself off and catch it
without the ramp.
Polaris Wig Go into the forest right near where you
start. The present is on the opposite
side under the cliff by the firepit near
the cave.
* Once you get the camera present from Stage 5, you can take pictures. Equip
it from the present menu then head on in to a level you like. Hit L1 for
free view and then circle to open the photo screen. You can take up to three
photos in each level and then save up to 12 of them in "Everyone's Memories"
in the collection menu.

6. Collection
=============
All items are listed by location spot. You can find the same list in the
game by going to the tree on Prince Star, then to 'spot'. Under 'spot' there
are three categories: House, Town, and World. The size of each item is listed
below each. Items with (R) beside the name indicate that they are rare, and
might be a little harder to find. To make it easier on you, each location
section is split into each page the items can be found on.
The collection is now 100% complete.

8. Strategy and Tips
====================
This section acts as a little FAQ; if you have questions on how to go about
building up to a certain size on a certain level, trouble finding certain
items, etc., email me and I'll do my best to help you out.

1] Make a Star 7 (size build)
Stage: Make a Star 7
Requested by: Everybody
Requirement: 6m (800m for Eternal 3) in 10 minutes
Strategy:
50cm-1.7m (10 minutes remain)
Start by rolling up the bananas in a line until you hit the pineapples. Break
off and pick them up, then get back to the bananas and continue to follow them
on the bridge, picking up the pails and teapots as you go. Follow the banana
line into the water and up the other side, then continue on with the line of
other items (axes, fish, hats, etc.) and you should be around 1.1m. If you
can't quite reach 1.2m from that, head down to the water (picking up items
along the way - daruma, etc.) and pick up the inner tubes, etc. on the beach.
At 1.2 you can pick up the sunflowers and balloons around the pond, at which
you will hit 1.5m with the last one. Grab the stone lamps by on the island on
the pond and the stuff in the water around it (lilypads, etc.) and continue on
around the side of the cliff in the water towards town.
1.7m-3.6m (8.5 minutes remain)
Grab the fish along the dock and the people with it (don't waste your time
getting anyone you knock too far away) and up to the chickens. Roll into
town by the pineapples to hit 2.0m. Stick to the streets in the town and pick
up whatever you happen to run into. Never stop to stress getting something,
just roll around getting whatever and you should hit 3.0m in no time. Go to
the school and over the wall (hold up against it, you'll get over) and pick up
the people there. Don't worry about getting absolutely *everyone*, just
whoever doesn't run too far. Go through the crack in the wall and up to the
next town.
3.6m-4.8m (6.5 minutes remain)
Roll around the streets much like you did in the lower town, pick up whatever
sits on a line either in the middle or the sides of the streets, maybe stop in
highly-concentrated areas of items you know you can get (the people near the
wrestling ring), but generally just roll around getting stuff, not paying
attention to detail. You can pick up the guardrails relatively early to a lot
of other things, so make sure you get them. When you've done a general sweep
across the town you should be at about 4.8m. Go down to the beach.
4.8m-6.0m+ (4.5 minutes remain)
Forget about the signs on top of the hotel on the way there, forget about the
palm trees and the umbrellas, you can't pick them up until after you're 6.0m.
Hit the tower of stuff on the beach and the people there, everything you can
pick up here, do it. When you're done here at about 5.4m or so, head back up
to town with a dash. Hit small cars, street posts, whatever you can to clean
up the rest of your ball. If you still can't do it but need a tiny bit more,
you can drop back down to the other town for a little more.

Stage: Make the Moon

Requirement: 300m (800m for Eternal 3) in 25 minutes
Strategy:
1.0m-1.6m (25 minutes remain)
Grab the phones and bells then dash off and grab some balloons on the way off
the cliff. Grab all the turnips out of the ground and run down the side of the
town near the fishermen. Pick up the stuff around the corner and run up the
ladder. Follow the street around the corner picking up items. You should
'level up' with or before the flowerpots around the corner.
1.6m-4.5m (23 minutes remain)
picking stuff around the town up and get sunflowers to 'level' again at 2.0m
Make sure to pick stuff up but don't stress getting absolutely everything. At
2.5m to 3.0, drop back down to the fishermen. Pick them up and circle of fish
jumping in the water. At 3.0m-3.5m you can pick up the people and fences in
the town so go back up and redo the streets (flower beds, etc.).
4.5-6.0m (21 minutes remain)
Head down to the pond area with the giraffe to pick up the fences and whatever
else you find down there. Don't bother going to the beach because there's not
a whole lot there. Go into the area with the gate to pick up the things there
and you should be able to hit 5.0m. Go back up to town and up to the school.
Pick up the people and the balls but again, don't waste a lot of time getting
everything. Try to avoid the Drill Tank.
6.0m-14.0m (20 minutes remain)
Go up the hill to the next town. Go around the streets picking up what you see.
Again, don't be too thorough, just pick stuff up where you can. At this point
people aren't worth too much so don't stress over them. At 10m go to the beach
to pick up the signs on the school and the tower of cars on the beach. Next,
double back up to the farm on the hill and pick up the fences and cows. From
this point you should be able to move pretty quickly around the area, so run
around picking up wheat you can until you hit 14m. Head back up to the school
and go through the 12m barrier.
14.0m-33.0m (17 minutes remain)
Follow alongside the side of the hill and pick up the totempole, the smaller
houses and the trucks. Head into the bay and pick up smaller boats. If you
dare, grab the dolphins leaping over the bridge (but avoid the submarine for
now). At this point you should be around 18.5m. Pick up the construction items
and the swordfish lying around on the ground near the giant squid. Cross the
bridge over to the zoo and pick up all the trees, animals, and trains. Stay in
that area picking up trees (a great source of size) then push up against the
cliff wall to get up to the next little town. Pick up all the houses there and
head back to the harbour area.
33.0m-77.0mm (14 minutes remain)
Once in the harbour area, use the factory building as a step to get up to the
city. Pick up all the houses and trees you can. Cross the long bridge to other
city and continue picking up houses, buildings, etc. Roll into the baseball
stadium. Now that you're around 45-50m, make sure to also grab the stadium
lights. Head into the next city across the bridge and then into the industrial
area to pick up the factory parts. Run back up to the harbour city and pick up
the rest of the buildings. Run back to the towns near the zoo for some more
buildings and then to the island you started on for some more.
75.0m-200.0m (11 minutes remain)
Past the opposite side of the starting island there is another area blocked by
a puny 16m barrier. Go in and cross the bridge. Collect everything in this city
except the skyscrapers and the radio tower. You should be over 100m at this
point. Across the ocean there is another city island (with the spinning crane
on it). Grab the buildings here and continue over the bridge with the bowling
pin gate. After the city with the ferris wheel you should be over 150m.
Continue through to the baseball stadium and you should be around 200m.
200.0m-800.0m+ (8 minutes remain)
There is one last new town under the rainbow nearby. From here on just go back
revisiting cities and areas picking up whatever new things you can. Pick up
little islands, whirlpools, and whatever things you find laying around in the
water. Once you hit 300m everything is easy to pick up. Use your dash a lot
to get around because everything can be pretty far away from each other. After
you've done all the major stuff (buildings, boats, etc.) you should go around
picking up islands, mushrooms, and clouds. That should be it!

3] Hard-to-Find Item Locations

Green Crayon Make a Star 3 Go around to the back of the takoyaki stand.
Facing it, look left to see a little
passageway, there's a few in there.
White Crayon Cygnus From where you start, run down the ramp to
the level with the cats, then down again to
the level with the TV, and down one level
more to four white crayons.
Crayon Box Eternal 2 Near the sand castle in the yard (it's a
flat green box).
1st Step Make a Star 9 If you go to the spot in Urchin Town
where the Panda Car and the Hell Car
are circling, look out into the water
and you should be able to see it floating
on a balloon. Dash off to grab it.
4th Step Make a Star 7 From where the rocks are falling off the
school roof, go directly out into the
water where the rocks would land, it'll
be UNDER the water near there. Very,
very tricky.
9th Step Eternal 2 On the island in the middle of Little
Pigeon Lake.
Love Cow Taurus On the island with the seaweed mill. Take
the road up to the farm and carefully
avoiding the smaller cows, dash yourself
off the ramp onto the island with the
Love Cow. You need to be 4.5m+, so make
sure you don't waste the jump.
Emerald/Onyx Make a Star 2 From the top of the table, run along the
Diamond/Ruby ruler to the drawer. Each time you play,
the ring will randomly hold a different
gem (pain in the neck).
Gold Medal Make a Star 5 Go down the slide to the sandbox and look
at the wall to your right. Go through to
the other side and up the chair cushion,
the medal is on top of the wall.
Gold Coin Make a Star 1 Go under the table. The coin is under the
woman's legs.
500 Yen Make a Star 2 The coin is in one of the mousetraps in
the closet next to the living room.
Picture Show Cancer Take the raising stone lanterns up to the
ledge with the trees, this item is leaning
up against the ledge. You need to be 63.9cm
to pick it up, so if you need a little boost
whack the trees to have some bigger items
fall out.

9. Soundtrack
=============
The music in this game is so awesome it needs to be flushed out a little more
than just the titles it gives you in the game. Below is a track list with
artist and stage information. An [L] mark beside the song name means lyrics
can be found in the next section of this guide.
At any point after you've completed the game, if you go to the Earth and press
Triangle the Prince will be taken to the Moon, where you can listen to the
songs as much as you like.
Soundtrack information is listed below. There are a few issues to work out
still, there's two songs on the album that aren't mentioned by name in the
game that are included in the album. I can only assume that:
Track 19, "Saigo ni Samba", is the ending song with all the screaming.
Track 21, "Katamari March Tamashii", is the tutorial music.
This is still strange though because the tutorial music *is* listed in the
music test on the moon as "Nananan Katamari Sepia". As soon as I find out
what's going on with these two songs I'll be sure to update.
As another point of interest, "Game Over" can be found in the moon music test,
but doesn't show up in the soundtrack. No huge loss, it's just wind blowing.
