A. Intro
----

This is an in-depth guide on Dunk Contests in NBA Street V3. Arguably the
biggest (and best) new feature in the NBA Street Series, the Dunk Contests add
a whole new way to have fun while playing this game.

What is a Dunk Contest? Read on.

(also, note: this can work on any version of this game--PS2, XBox, or GC--but
any controls given are for Playstation2.

B. What Is A Dunk Contest?
----

The Dunk Contest is the biggest new feature in NBA Street V3. Basically, you
have 3 tries (or less, depending on what you choose) to pull off as much crazy
**** as you can in mid-air and end it all by throwing the ball down into the
hoop. The actual goal is to get the most points, which you receive through
doing dunks.

The best part of these contests, though, is that you simply have an assload of
fun playing them, whether against the computer or against your friends. So to
find out how to MAXIMIZE your fun (and by that, i mean start WINNING dunk
contests), read the rest of the FAQ.

C. Dunk Contest Controls
----

Key:
O = circle
X = cross/X
TS = trick stick (right analog stick)
Turbo = L1/L2/R1/R2/a combination of those four

O/Turbo: Jump and Start Dunk
TS/Turbo: Mid Air Trick (during the dunk)
X/Turbo: Freeball Pass (before dunk)
Select: Use props (before dunk)

D. Setting Up a Contest
----

---
1. How do I get to a dunk contest?
---
From the main menu, hit "Play It" and then go to "Dunk Contest".

---
2. Customization Time
---
Once you've chosen to enter a dunk contest, you've got a lot of choices to
make.

a. How Many Dunkers: Pick the number of dunkers that will participate in this
contest. Choices: 2, 4, or 8.
b. Difficulty: Pick how easy or how hard the contest will be. Choices: Got Game
(easy), Mad Game (medium), Legendary (hard).
c. Choose Dunkers: Pick who will participate in the dunk contest. Choices:
Anyone on any team, including the 30 NBA teams, the NBA Stars, the NBA Legends,
the Top Dunkers, the Street Legends, and the Beastie Boys teams.
-Once you've picked a player, pick whether or not they will be controlled by
a controller (a human) or the computer.
d. Choose Venue: Pick where you'll have the dunk contest. Choices: Tandy
(location: St. Louis, MO), Venice Beach (Los Angeles, CA), or Rucker Park (New
York, NY).

---
3. My Rules
---
After you've picked from each of the above categories, it's time to decide how
the contest will go down. You have two choices: Play Game or My Rules. If you
select My Rules, you'll have a few more choices to make:

a. Props -- Free Setup/Persistent: If you choose persistent, props will stay
around until the end of the round. If you pick free setup, props will be
cleared after each dunk.
b. Dunks Per Round -- 1/2/3: Pick how many dunks will be performed per round.
c. Watch CPU Dunks -- Yes/No: Pick whether or not you want to see the computer
players' dunks.
d. Scoring -- Drop Lowest/Add All: Drop Lowest means that the lowest score that
you receive for a dunk will not count (only active if you have 2 or 3 dunks per
round chosen). Add All takes all scores and adds them together to get your
final score for the round.

If you just chose "Play Game" the game will chose Free Setup, 3, Yes, and Drop
Lowest as the setup.

E. During the Contest
----

Once you've chosen everything, it's time to get the actual contest on. This
will be broken down into three sections: Before the Dunk (when your player is
standing around ready to jump and start the dunk), During the Dunk (when your
player is in mid-air), and After the Dunk (scoring).

---
1. Before the Dunk
---
First of all, the shot clock IS in effect, so once the countdown starts at the
bottom corner of the screen, you better work quickly. (As long as you start
your dunk with at least one second on the shot clock, though, there's no
problem) So, now that you're ready to dunk, start your dunk by pressing X and a
turbo button(s). But before you do that, you can throw a little bit of extra
flavor in there by doing one of these:

a. Props: Hit select, and the light will go towards an item on the side of the
court. Hit Up or Down to look at the other props. If you find one that you want
to place on the court so you can jump over it, highlight it and press X. Then
use the left analog stick to place your prop wherever you want on the court.
Props can occasionally be tricky, because every once in a while you'll time it
incorrectly and run into the prop (and if you do that, you will receive ZERO
points almost every time). But as long as you can get the timing down, you
should try it whenever you get a chance. It isn't very hard, and the judges
seem to love it.
b. Freeball Pass: Hold any of the turbo buttons and press X. Your player will
throw the ball in the air (he'll throw it in different ways depending on what
turbo buttons you press). Then, while the ball's in the air, start a dunk the
way you normally would (X/Turbo). Your player should grab the ball, and then
you'll be at the normal mid-air screen.
The problem with Freeball Passes, in my mind, is that after the pass, you don't
usually have that much time to do tricks unless your player has a very high
dunk rating (say, 90+). IF you DO still have a lot of airtime, go crazy. When
tricks are thrown in, the judges LOVE Freeball passes. But simply doing a pass
and then casually floating in mid-air, which very likely could happen, won't
cut it (trust me, I've seen the computer do it and get low scores way too many
times). Bottom line: Freeball Pass it at your own risk.

Now that you've taken off, it's time to see what you can do in the air.

---
2. During the Dunk:
---

Once you're in the air, it's all about one thing: Mid-air tricks. The more
turbo buttons you're holding (0, 1, 2, 3, or 4), the longer the trick will
take, and the less time you'll have for other tricks, but you'll get more
points for pulling off tricks that involve more turbo buttons.

Don't try to cram in 3257895691489 air tricks in one jump. If you try to do too
much for your character to handle, you WILL miss the dunk, and your score will
most likely be in the single digits. Throwing in one big trick (i.e. 3 to 4
turbo buttons) and then a simple trick (i.e. 0 to 1 turbo button) seems to work
just fine with me.

To see exactly what kinds of tricks you're pulling, look at the circles on the
combo meter:

Red Circle/Arrow: 4-turbo trick
Yellow Circle/Arrow: 3-turbo trick
Green Circle/Arrow: 2-turbo trick
Blue Circle/Arrow: 1-turbo trick
White Circle/Arrow: 0-turbo trick

To see a list of each mid-air trick, read the Mid-Air Dunk Trick List towards
the end of the FAQ.

---
3. After the Dunk
---

As soon as your player throws the ball down into the hoop (or misses their
dunk), a new display will come up. At the bottom of your screen, you'll see
two things:

a. Originality Meter: This basically shows what the judges thought of the stuff
you did in the air. If you pulled off a multitude of great tricks and threw it
down, you'll get a full meter. If you only do one trick while in the air, the
meter won't be as full. As you rise in difficulty, it gets harder and harder to
fill a trick meter completely.
(Another note: If you do the same mid-air tricks during a combo,
your originality meter will reduce, and you'll get less points. Also, if you
copy someone else's dunk, the meter will decrease as well. Credit to DXM Zer0
for telling me this)
b. Trick Display: This shows the types of tricks that you pulled while in the
air, in sequence. Each of the circles represents the following:

Red Circle/Arrow: 4-turbo trick
Yellow Circle/Arrow: 3-turbo trick
Green Circle/Arrow: 2-turbo trick
Blue Circle/Arrow: 1-turbo trick
White Circle/Arrow: 0-turbo trick
White Basketball: Freeball Pass
Trophy-looking shape: Props were used
Orange basketball: Dunk was successfully completed
Red Circle/Slash: Dunk was not successfully completed

So that'll basically give you a short story about your dunk.

Now once you see those, the panel of judges (made up of LeBron James, Elgin
Baylor, and Stretch, by the way) will score your dunk, from a scale of 0 to 30.
This basically critiques your dunk and says what the judges thought of it.
Usually, 20+ is ideal for dunks on Got Game, and even higher on the 20s will
work on harder difficulties. The high teens isn't bad on lower difficulty, but
when the difficulty rises, so will your opponents' scores.

Once you actually complete your turn, you can watch CPU dunks, if you chose to,
and then, if you have another turn, you'll go again. If not, you'll be taken to
the scorecard, where you can see how you did compared to your opponents. Your
score for all of your dunks translates into this:

Top 4 out of a round of 8: You move on to round of 4.
Top 2 out of a round of 4: You move on to round of 2.
Higher score in a round of 2: You win the contest.

H. Other Stuff
----

Here's where we pull out everything and throw the craziest ideas that have
worked for you.

-If you really want to do a lot before you actually hit mid-air, try this: pull
a prop (preferrably a shorter prop) and place it in the lane. Walk up to just
outside of the 3-point line. Do a Freeball Pass. Then, while the pass is in the
air, jump up for the ball. If you execute it perfectly, you'll have done a
Freeball Pass AND you'll have used a prop, and you may still have time to pull
something in mid-air. It takes some time to master, but if you've got a great
dunker, than try it. You won't be disappointed with what the judges give you.
-To get lots of SP points: Select two of the best dunkers and pull a bunch of
crazy **** in the contest. Then select rematch, and you can do it again. Credit
to Nflglacier@aol.com for sending this in.
-To get an easy 30 point dunk:
As King James, in Legendary:
1) Add a prop (any) directly in the middle (default position)
2) Approach the basket. When you\'re between the 3pt and the top of the key,
hold all 4 turbos and press O to jump
3) Immediately, hold all 4 turbos and click r-stick to the right (for a
red-right)
4) Immediately, hold 2 turbos (L1+L2 is easiest) and click r-stick up (for a
green-up)
5) Immediately let go of everything so you don't accidentally do more tricks.
