place, which are arguably the most important components.

Q: In a nutshell, what is the purpose of this guide?
A: This guide attempts to detail as many aspects of Persona 3's gameplay with
regards to dungeon-crawling, combat mechanics, and of course, the Personas
themselves.
Q: So this isn't a walkthrough?
A: Nope. In fact, I highly recommend that you do not play this game with a
walkthrough your first time through. It'll make the experience that much
better, trust me.
Q: What about Social Links?
A: That is also not the purpose of this document. Furthermore, penguin_knight's
excellent Round One Max Social Links FAQ (on gamefaqs.com) has everything
you want to know about S.Links, so you should check that out if you have
questions about S.Links, regardless of whether or not you plan to follow it
fully. Of course, S.Links do have some effect on the material covered in
this document, and I have referenced them where necessary, but there is
nothing in here that covers their actual development.
Q: Are there spoilers?
A: Astute gamers can usually extract spoilers from detailed reference documents
in a variety of ways (inference from names, references, and subtle
incongruities), and your definition of "spoiler" may differ from that of
others. So, sorry to be somewhat vague on this, but proceed at your own
risk. However, in terms of obvious things like dialogue transcripts and
explicit descriptions of in-game events, I can promise you that there are
none.
Q: Anything else I should know?
A: I'm not going to spell everything out for you; I assume that you have a good
grasp on the game's fundamentals, such as the 1 More system, getting knocked
down, and all that good stuff. Anything I define in this document is for the
purpose of cross-referencing among different sections of the guide. If you
need a refresher on the basics, read the manual, strategy guide, or the in-
game Help menu.
Q: There are a ton of skills and Personas to sift through...
A: I know. It was a pain for me to put them all in. For the sake of preventing
the table of contents from becoming unreasonably unwieldy, I have chosen to
omit a listing of each skill and Persona there. But there's a trick to
simple navigation. I have bracketed the names of each skill and Persona with
plus signs ('+') within its mini-table, so you can use Find on "+ Name +"
without the quotes to jump to whatever skill or Persona you want details on
e.g. "+ Morning Star +" or "+ Orpheus +".
Q: Hey! You're missing ________!
A: Due to the fact that this document is highly incomplete and will be for some
time, I would like to express my awareness of what exactly is missing from
this guide. I have done my best to ensure that the information available be
comprehensive enough within its own context. Please keep this in mind before
sending me any correspondence. At this point, the only e-mail I will
prioritize is anything that points out any glaring errors that are present
in the document.
Q: Will this guide also work for Fes?
A: Mostly, but there are important changes to Persona and Skill listings, among
other things, that will be noted, as well as new stuff to worry about, like
weapon synthesis and the like. It's likely that this guide will be gradually
phased out as the release date for Fes approaches. Some time before the game
comes out, I will upload a new version of this guide with all the necessary
updates and put it under Fes.
Q: This guide is too bulky; why can't you split it up?
A: I probably will for Fes.

2. System: Basic [00200]

2a. Stats [002a0]
Here is a list of basic stats in the game:
LV: Level.
HP: Hit Points. The amount of damage a character can take before being
rendered unconscious. If the protagonist's HP reaches 0, either through
damage taken or an instant-kill attack, it's Game Over. Physical attack
skills use up HP.
SP: Spirit Points. Used to cast spells.
St: Strength. Affects the power of physical attacks.
Ma: Magic. Affects the power of magic attacks.
En: Endurance. Affects defense against attacks.
Ag: Agility. Affects attack accuracy and evasion against normal (physical or
magic) attacks.
Lu: Luck. Affects chances of performing critical hits and evasion against
special (status effect and instant-kill) attacks.

2b. Status effects [002b0]
There are a variety of status effects that either improve or hamper various
combat abilities.

(1) Conditions [002b1]
Your physical condition can be one of four possibilities:
- Great
Your attack power, defensive power, critical rate, evasion, and resistance to
ailments (effectiveness of Bad Status skills) all go up. In addition, you
have a high chance of quickly recovering from being knocked down (i.e. being
able to act on the next turn even after being knocked down, while a normal
recovery allows you to get up but not act on the next turn).
- Good
Normal condition. No special effects.
- Tired
Your attack power and defensive power go down. Your chance of recovery from
being knocked down decreases.
- Sick
Same as Tired, plus decreased accuracy, evasion, and resistance to ailments.
In addition, the effectiveness of all Recovery spells cast on you (whether by
you or another character) is halved. Note that this doesn't affect the
effectiveness of YOUR casting of Recovery spells on others.

(2) Ailments [002b2]
The following ailments can be inflicted during battle:
- Charm
The character is confused and will either attack allies, heal enemies, or do
nothing. The character is not controllable until he or she recovers.
- Distress
The character loses the ability to evade attacks. Defensive power decreases
and susceptibility to critical hits increases significantly.
- Panic
The character cannot concentrate and loses the ability to use skills (i.e.
summon Personas). Susceptibility to critical hits increases.
- Fear
The character's accuracy decreases. His or her susceptibility to critical
hits and to being stunned (knocked down) increases.
- Rage
The character goes berserk and becomes uncontrollable. Only physical attacks
will be used. While attack power increases significantly, defensive power
also decreases significantly.
- Freeze
The character is frozen and cannot evade any attacks for one turn. Added
effect from Ice skills.
- Shock
The character is shocked and cannot evade any attacks for one turn.
Susceptibility to critical hits also increases. Added effect from Electricity
skills.
- Poison
The character loses HP during every round of combat and also with every step
taken outside of combat. Effect persists until it is cured.

Typical of most RPGs, Persona 3 invokes its own variation of the uber-
protagonist rule. Your poor allies can only wield one Persona, but not you.
You're special. You get one hundred forty-five (145). No big deal. Just a bit
more variety than your companions.

3b. Arcana [003b0]
As can be seen, the protagonist's Personas are spread out among the first
twenty-one of the twenty-two Tarot Major Arcana.

(1) Categorization [003b1]
Each Arcana can be generalized in terms of the types of Personas that are
granted to the protagonist.
- Fool (0)
Fool Personas are fairly well-rounded. They are not stacked towards any
particular focus.
- Magician (I)
As you might expect, Personas of the Magician Arcana tend to be spellcasters.
Furthermore, they are inclined towards an affinity for the element of Fire
and a weakness to the element of Ice. This Arcana is, on the whole, one of
the weakest in the game, with its highest-ranked Persona (Surt) having a Base
Level of 50, the lowest among all Arcana.
- Priestess (II)
Priestess Personas also focus on magic. They are somewhat split between
emphases on Ice and Recovery magic, and are generally weak against Fire.
- Empress (III)
Empress Personas are like Priestess Personas, with a fairly similar spread
between Ice and Recovery. You might call the Empress Arcana a stronger
version of Priestess, since Empress Personas are overall very high-level.
- Emperor (IV)
The Emperor Arcana is as close as you can get to being an Electricity-based
Arcana, with all-around decent offensive capabilities, although somewhat
skewed towards magic.
- Hierophant (V)
Hierophant is a very balanced Arcana. Hierophant Personas have well-rounded
stats and do not tend towards any single element; instead, support and
passive skills are more prevalent. In general, Hierophants are not exactly
offensive powerhouses, but are fairly useful regardless.
- Lovers (VI)
Lovers Personas are generally healing specialists, with a decent spread of
various other skills. Nothing much more to say about them. Or maybe I'm just
lazy.
- Chariot (VII)
The Chariot Arcana is one of three in the game with a clear focus on physical
skills. It is generally the first one that you will gain access to, and,
unsurprisingly, it is also the weakest. Nevertheless, since there are
relatively few Personas with a physical focus, as opposed to the wealth of
those focused on magic, Chariots are going to be of help to any brawler-
oriented approach to developing a build for the protagonist. Note that
Chariots are rather lacking in terms of Pierce skills, and are split fairly
evenly between Slash and Strike skills.
- Justice (VIII)
Justice Personas are Light specialists. They are all weak against Dark
attacks, so you're essentially nullifying half of potential instant-kill
attacks in exchange for making yourself more vulnerable to the other half. As
far as other skills go, there is a fairly even spread in terms of physical,
magic, and healing skills. Justice is another decent all-around Arcana.
- Hermit (IX)
Hermits are a bit different from everyone else, which befits the Arcana name.
They tend to lean a little bit towards Bad Status skills and debuffs, which
make them fairly specialized. They don't have many chances to shine, but they
can turn the protagonist into a decent support fighter.
- Fortune (X)
Fortune is quite obviously the Wind Arcana. There is no need for any sort of
complex analysis here.
- Strength (XI)
Strength is the mid-tier physical Arcana. It should be noted that Strength
Personas focus almost exclusively on Slash skills.
- Hanged Man (XII)
Staying power is the name of the game when it comes to Hanged Man Personas.
They comprise the only Arcana with a distinctly defensive focus, with high
Endurance stats and growth across the board. Hanged Man is kind of like a
sturdier version of Hierophant, but with less offense.
- Death (XIII)
No one should be surprised that Death Personas specialize in the Dark element
and are generally weak against Light.
- Temperance (XIV)
Temperance Personas are good offensive casters, covering Fire, Ice, and
Electricity, with a bit of leaning towards Ice.
- Devil (XV)
Devils specialize in Bad Status and also dabble in Dark skills. Given their
implied origin, they are generally strong against Fire. Naturally, they fare
poorly against Light skills.
- Tower (XVI)
Tower is the ultimate physical-based Arcana. Personas in this group are more
or less offensive powerhouses, with plenty of strong Slash and Pierce skills,
high levels, and an occasional offensive spell for flavor. By all means, use
Tower Personas, and enjoy doing so.
- Star (XVII)
Star is another strong all-around Arcana, but Star Personas are also very
beefed up, with much higher levels relative to most other Arcana. Offensive
spells trend towards either Fire or Wind. The one Persona that seals the deal
is Lucifer, who is, with little debate, the single strongest Persona in the
game.
- Moon (XVIII)
The Moon Arcana could be seen as a relative weak link in the Arcana order,
situated right in between Tower/Star on one side and Sun/Judgement on the
other, but it is far from being a weak Arcana. Moon Personas have a great
spread of offensive skills, whether they be physical or magic, and come with
the levels and stats to back them up.
- Sun (XIX)
You could consider Sun to be a stronger version of Justice. Both Arcana shrug
off Light attacks and are weak to dark attacks. However, Sun Personas
generally eschew wielding Light attacks of their own in favor of a diverse
body of general offensive spells.
- Judgement (XX)
Judgement is kind of like Sun, except without the weakness to Dark, generally
speaking. Personas of this Arcana are by far the highest-leveled Personas in
the game, and it will be a while before you can obtain even the lowest-ranked
one (Lv 59 Anubis).

(2) Stat growths [003b2]
In addition, each Persona has a particular preference when it comes to
allocating stat points upon leveling up. The allocation of each stat point is
an independent event, but with each point, there are fixed probabilities in
terms of which stat a Persona chooses to level up.
All Personas within the same Arcana have the same probability distribution in
stat point selection. Based on these distributions, the Arcana can also be
generally classified solely in terms of stat-raising inclinations.
Values are rounded off, so they add up to within 0.1% of 100.
