- With the release of FES, I've started this guide out with Igor's tutorials
and the new and improved fusion tables. The tutorials and mechanics
explanations are ripped straight from my vanilla P3 FAQ, so there may be some
errors, but I'll fix them later. For now, whatever examples I carried over
should suffice to show how stuff works.
- Most of the other tables have not yet been updated for FES.
- Information on weapon fusion (entirely new to FES) will come later.

developed Social Link during fusion. I don't have a guaranteed formula for
exactly how much experience you get per Commu Rank, but I can provide a good
estimation in terms of how many levels you gain.

I am fairly confident in the accuracies of the values corresponding to Commu
Ranks 5 and 10. Using those, I extrapolated a linear relationship, which may or
may not be completely correct, but nevertheless seems adequate.

| You simply fuse two Personas together. |

| Next, the Triangle Spread... |
| In this type of fusion, three Personas are used to produce a Persona of an |
| even higher order. |

| Supposedly, certain Persons can only be created through Triangle Spread |
| fusion... |

| In general, Persona fusion exhibits predictable patterns dependent on the |
| Arcana involved. |
| |
| There are a number of combinations, however, that don't follow the usual |
| patterns. |
| |
| For example, fusing Personas of the same Arcana... |
| |
| The best way to learn is to experiment on your own. |

Nitty-gritty time.
The first step to figuring out what Persona you are going to get via basic
fusion involves the consideration of the BASE LEVELS of the ingredients you are
using. Remember, use BASE LEVELS, not CURRENT LEVELS. Calculate the average
value among your ingredients and round it down to the nearest whole number.
This is a universal step, so let's give this value a shorthand, "AVG", for
discussion in subsequent examples.
From here, I will separate the mechanics for normal and triangle spreads
fusions. I will further isolate same-Arcana fusions (e.g. Fool x Fool, Fool x
Fool x Fool) for separate considerations.

(1) Normal spread [002c1]
To determine the output Persona as a result of normal spread fusion, do the
following:
1. Calculate AVG for your two ingredient Personas and round down.
> Example: Orpheus (Base Lv 1) x Orobas (Base Lv 34)
AVG = 17.5 -> 17
2. Add 1 to AVG.
> Example: Orpheus (Base Lv 1) x Orobas (Base Lv 34)
AVG + 1 = 18
3. Now, the Arcana to which your resultant Persona belongs is determined by the
Arcanae of your ingredient Personas.
> Example: Orpheus (Fool) x Orobas (Magician)
Resultant Arcana = Hierophant
(Don't worry about how that was determined, there will be plenty
of tables later for your perusal.)
4. Take your (AVG + 1) value and look within the resultant Arcana for the
Persona whose Base Level is at least that.
> Example: Within Hierophant, 17 + 1 = 18 is sandwiched by Berith (Lv 13)
and Shiisaa (Lv 26). Therefore, the fusion result will be
Shiisaa.
Here is a set of tables that shows you what you can fuse with a specified
ingredient of a particular Arcana. Three dashed lines ("---") means that
nothing comes of that particular fusion, and therefore it is an invalid
combination.
I know that I haven't discussed same-Arcana fusions, but I'll leave them in the
tables for thoroughness. I'll come back to them later.

Just to restate the obvious: you will see that Fool, Tower, Sun, and Judgement
Personas cannot be acquired via normal spread fusion unless it is through a
same-Arcana fusion, which will always be a rank-down fusion (more on that
later).

(2) Triangle spread [002c2]
There is a lot of confusion about how triangle spread fusion works, so I will
explain.
In triangle spread fusion, the determination of which Arcana the result belongs
to is based on two factors. The first is what I will call a hypothetical
"intermediate", which is the result of a normal spread fusion between the 1st
Persona and the 2nd Persona. The second factor is the 3rd Persona.
The big question is: when you select your three Personas, how do you know which
is the 1st, which is the 2nd, and which is the 3rd?
The only distinction that matters is the identity of the 3rd Persona, which is
determined by the following two checks. The system performs the first check. If
no distinction can be made using that, it proceeds to the second check.
Check 1: The Persona whose CURRENT LEVEL -- NOT Base Level -- is highest.
Check 2: The Persona whose Arcana is of the lowest order, 0/Fool being the
lowest, XX/Judgement being the highest.
> Example: Lv 25 Power (VIII) x Lv 25 Lamia (IX) x Lv 22 Mithra (XIV)
3rd Persona selected = Power
(tie for highest Current Level -> lowest order Arcana)
Once the 3rd Persona is determined, the system performs the intermediate step
of performing a normal spread fusion on the other two, and the corresponding
Arcana of that intermediate is crossed with that of the 3rd Persona. In the
example above, we'd get an intermediate of (Hermit x Temperance =) Hanged Man,
which combines with our 3rd Persona of Justice to produce a Priestess (again,
you'll see this later in the tables).
To determine what sort of Priestess you get, you can do the same sort of thing
you did with normal spread fusion. The catch here is that your comparative
value is (AVG + 5), not (AVG + 1).

AVG + 5 = 29

** IMPORTANT **
Again, allow me to emphasize that this is VERY important.
Note that the Arcana classifications can be swapped. This means that,
alternatively, you can create a Justice as your intermediate (e.g. Emperor x
Strength) and use a Hanged Man as the 3rd Persona, and you will ALSO get a
Priestess via triangle spread fusion. I hope this makes sense.
In the tables to follow, "Normal Res" is short for the Arcana result you get
via normal fusion of your 1st and 2nd Personas. Again, use any combination on a
particular row.

(3) Same-Arcana fusions [002c3]
Same-Arcana fusions follow slightly different rules, but they're not that hard
to understand.
In normal spread fusion, you calculate your (AVG + 1) value normally. Now, your
resultant Arcana is the same (e.g. Fool x Fool = Fool). The Persona that you
end up with is done by following these steps:
1. From your (AVG + 1) value, move DOWN one rank within the Arcana.
> Examples: Orpheus x Decarabia = Ose, Ose x Susano-o = Loki
2. If this results in one of the ingredients, move down ANOTHER rank.
> Examples: Slime x Legion = Orpheus, Decarabia x Susano-o = Ose, or any
combination of two Personas in successive order within an Arcana.
3. You can NEVER do a rank-up fusion in normal spread, so combinations
involving the two weakest Personas within an Arcana are invalid.
> Example: Orpheus x Slime = N/A
In triangle spread fusion (and I am referring ONLY to fusions where all three
ingredients are of the same Arcana, e.g. Fool x Fool x Fool = Fool), there are
two differences with respect to normal spread fusion:
- Your comparative value is (AVG + 5), not (AVG + 1). This is nothing new.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 from above, except replace the word "down" with "up".
- Examples:
Orpheus x Slime x Legion = Ose (skipping Black Frost since it is a special
fusion)
Slime x Legion x Black Frost = Ose
Legion x Ose x Decarabia = Loki
Note the first example; since these fusions ARE rank-up in nature, you can
indeed use the three weakest Personas within an Arcana. On the other hand, you
cannot use the three STRONGEST within an Arcana. Therefore, a formula of
Loki x Susano-o x Orpheus Telos gets you squat. Can't be done.

Let me distinguish between SPECIAL fusions and RESTRICTED fusions here.
- SPECIAL fusions require a specific formula of ingredient Personas; they can
never be made via normal or triangle spread, with the following exceptions:
Orpheus, Pixie, Norn, Shiva, and Messiah. Special fusions requiring four or
more ingredients are only available from September 21 on.
- RESTRICTED fusions almost always require a corresponding key item to unlock
its ability to be fused. These key items are obtained through either the
completion of certain requests or the maxing of S.Links. The only Personas
that don't have corresponding key items are the ones that are unlocked
through maxed story-based S.Links: Susano-o, Thanatos, and Messiah.
Of course, these are not mutually exclusive distinctions. Some Personas are a
product of both a special AND a restricted fusion.
And now, the full list of special fusions.
- In the following table, the "R" column designates whether or not the special
fusion is also a restricted fusion. An "M" means that the Persona's Arcana's
S.Link must be maxed. An "E" means that the completion of one of Elizabeth's
requests is required to lift the restriction. A dash means that there is no
restriction.
- The "Spr" column designates the type of spread required. Abbreviations for
spread types should be obvious.

| Allow me to explain more about skill inheritance. |

| For each Persona, there are skills that can be inherited, and those that |
| cannot. |
| |
| It is primarily determined by the Persona's characteristics... |

| Here are some general rules. |

| Personas proficient at physical attacks are unlikely to inherit magic |
| attacks. |
| |
| Regarding magic attacks... let us first discuss Fire, Ice, Electricity and |
| Wind. |
| |
| A Persona with an affinity for one of these four elements cannot inherit |
| skills of [the] other three types. |
| |
| Likewise, Personas with an affinity for Light will never inherit Dark |
| skills, and vice versa. |
| |
| Meanwhile, Personas proficient at healing cannot inherit any physical |
| attacks. |
| |
| As you'd expect, Personas good at physical attacks tend to be bad at |
| magic, and very few Personas can wield magic of multiple elements. |
| |
| Even more rare are Personas who can inherit any skill, although they do |
| exist. |
| |
| You will learn more, by and by, as you experiment with fusion. |

Each Persona is of a certain Inherit Type. This means that they will have
skewed preferences in terms of what types of skills they choose to carry over
as a result of being fused. In the following tables, I have laid out these
preferences, represented mathematically in probability ratios.
Probability Ratios (PrR values) are easy to decipher. Using the table in the
DoubleJump guide, I calibrated the base PrR value for an Inherit Type ALL
Persona (which prefers every type of skill equally) to be 1.0, and went from
there, converting all of the other values.
To read the tables, you have to think comparatively between two types of
skills. For example, an Inherit Type SLASH Persona is eight times more likely
to pick up a Slash skill than a Strike, Pierce, Special, or Passive skill,
since the comparative ratio is 8.0 : 1.0. It is forty times more likely to pick
up a Slash skill overa Recovery or Almighty skill (8.0 : 0.2).
The reason that a probability ratio is used instead of a strict percent chance
is because the skills that carry over for any fusion varies in terms both
number and type. Therefore, a probability ratio is best in terms of evaluating
what skills are most likely to carry over.
In other words, PrR values are a more convenient way to handle a pool of more
than two skills. Consider a Strike-type Persona with the following skills
available to carry over during fusion:
- 1 Slash skill
- 2 Strike skills
- 1 Almighty skill
- 2 Passive skills
The net probability ratio is 1.0 : 8.0 : 8.0 : 0.2 : 1.0 : 1.0.
Note that actual value for any tabulated Probability Ratio (PrR) of 8.0 is
119/15, but I doubt there will be any serious complaints as to the validity of
8.0 as a nice, rounded off approximation.

Certain Personas, when fused, are capable of bearing pieces of equipment that
are either unique or, at the very least, significantly rare. Aside from the
ultimate armors that Messiah produces, all of these items are accessories that
provide the equivalent of one or more passive skills.
To obtain the "heart item", so called due to the fact that a heart appears next
to the Persona's name in the menu, you have to level up enough to learn all of
that Persona's innate skills. If all skills are learned as a result of S.Link
bonus experience, you have to gain another level after that in order to obtain
the item.
You are not required to keep all of the innate skills upon learning them, i.e.
you can toss them if there is an overflow and you are forced to discard one or
more skills.
There is only about a 40% for the emergence of a heart item upon fusion, so you
may want to keep a save handy for reloading if you don't get the result you
want, since you won't be able to tell whether or not the heart item is there
until after Igor does his thing. This percentage doubles, to approximately 80%,
if the current moon phase is New or Full.

In order to obtain multiple copies of one of these items, simply register the
Persona right before it's due to spit its item out, level up, get the item, and
ditch the Persona (via dismissal or fusion), and reobtain it from the
Compendium. This is the only way to obtain every single item that Messiah is
capable of producing. Of course, it'll end up being quite expensive...
By the way, any Personas in the table that can be gained from Shuffle cards
will NEVER produce heart items if obtained that way. They MUST be fused.

3. Advanced Mechanics [00300]

3a. Techniques [003a0]
You can probably get through the game without ever delving into the nuances of
fusion, but if you take some time to really dig into it, there is lot for you
to explore.
The most common questions I see are about how to get a certain skill onto a
certain Persona, usually with regard to one of Elizabeth's requests. Those
requests are meant for the player to try to wrap his or her head around fusion
mechanics.
Of course, it would be easy to provide a formula/recipe to fulfill those
requests, but this does not necessarily benefit the player in terms of actually
fully understanding fusion. Two aspects of Persona 3, fusion and Social Link
management, are actually different types of logic puzzles that force the player
to actually think about what he or she is doing.
If this does not fit your playing style, then this section is not for you. I
say this with no condescension, as I understand that every gamer has
preferences in terms of how he or she decides to enjoy a game. On the other
hand, if you decide that you do not necessarily want to be held by the hand but
still desire further elaboration on the fusion system, read on.
You should first go back and read through Section 6 in its entirety. Then
return here, but make sure you have the skill inheritance tables on hand for
the following discussions.

(1) Inheritance management [003a1]
First, terminology, some of which I've already been using:
- A TARGET Persona is one you want to make.
- An INGREDIENT Persona is what you use to create a target.
- A FORMULA or RECIPE is a list of steps traced from your initial ingredients
to the final target.
- NOISE is what we will refer to as a collective term for unwanted skills that
are heavily favored by the target. For example, you want to create a Thanatos
with Vorpal Blade. Therefore, Dark-type and Bad Status-type skills are what
we would refer to as noise in this particular instance.
- JUNK is the inverse of noise. Junk will be used to denote unwanted skills
that are either NOT favored by the target or flat-out impossible for the
target to inherit.
The two things that you need to master when it comes to advanced fusion are
noise control and junk distribution. Allow me to use a very easy example:
> TARGET: Byakko with Elec Amp, Thunder Reign, Spell Master
> FORMULA: Odin (Lv 65+) x Surt
This is not a difficult fusion at all, but to cover the bases of my discussion,
I will go over several important points, step-by-step.
1. Carryover
Try to produce a carryover of at least (n+1) skills, where n is the number of
specific skills that you want on the target.
This should be obvious. You want a little leeway so you're not stuck with
having to ABSOLUTELY get every single one of your skills right. In this case,
we want Suzaku to inherit 3 specific skills, so we should have enough skills on
Rangda and Odin to produce a carryover of 4. To do this, we need a minimum of
12 total skills between Odin and Rangda.
In triangle spread fusion, you should generally try to fill up all three
ingredients with 8 skills each, giving you a carryover of 5.
2. Noise control
In this case, the transfer of Thunder Reign from Odin to Byakko is easy because
Byakko is an Elec-type, so he will readily accept Thunder Reign. However, we do
have noise in the form of any other Elec skills on Odin, who learns both
Ziodyne and Maziodyne. In addition to the fact that Byakko learns these two
spells naturally anyway, we don't want them because we want Elec Amp and Spell
Master, passive skills. The problem is that Byakko will heavily favor carrying
over Ziodyne and Maziodyne.
Therefore, when you create Odin in the first place (of course, since Odin can
only be acquired through fusion), you should look to control the noise by means
of...
3. Junk distribution
So, let's see. Odin also learns Vile Assault, which is a physical skill. Now,
Suzaku is capable of inheriting Vile Assault, but is five times more likely to
inherit a passive skill, such as -- you guessed it -- Elec Amp or Spell Master.
Therefore, in fusing Odin, you could try to load him up with a bunch of
physical skills; he is Elec-type like Suzaku, so his inheritance properties are
the same. Then, as you fill out his repertoire through leveling, you will have
to forget skills to make room for the three that you want: Elec Amp at 60,
Thunder Reign at 63, and Spell Master at 65. At that point, you can forget
Ziodyne and Maziodyne. In essence, you have swapped them for physical skills
that are less likely to be inherited than your passive skills will be.
Basically, physical skills can be used as junk in this fusion.
Now, throughout this, I have made no mention of Surt. We don't want any of
His skills on Suzaku, so we still have to deal with his potential noise. Let's
look at his default skills: Agidyne, Deathbound, Fire Boost, Maragidyne (54),
Ragnarok (58), and Fire Amp (59).
Deathbound is a physical skill, so for our purposes, it's suitable junk.
Agidyne and Maragidyne are the best kind of junk: the kind that can't be
carried over at all.
Fire Boost and Fire Amp, however, compete with Elec Amp and Spell Master, so
we'd like to get rid of them if we can by giving Rangda some more junk.
Surt is a Fire-type. Put two and two together...
Like I said, it's not that hard. You can easily create a Surt with a ton of
lower-level Fire skills using repeated Magician fusions and forget or reject
Fire Boost and Fire Amp when the time comes.
4. ???
5. Profit
With these things in mind, you are on your way to carving out your own fusion
pathways in matching up your favorite skills with your favorite Personas.

(2) Bridges [003a2]
A fusion bridge is what I will call an intermediately fused Persona in a
particular pathway. For example, in the formula:
1. Laksmi x Kingu = Titania
2. Titania x Bishamonten = Ganesha
Titania would be a bridge to Ganesha.
The concept of bridges is important because you can use them as noise filters
and junk carriers in order to transfer skills from an ingredient to a target of
a similar inheritance type, where the skills that you want to transfer are NOT
of that skill type.
What do I mean by this? Let's say you've loaded up Titania with a bunch of
first-rate passive skills and you want to create a Cybele with those skills.
Now, creating Cybele from Titania is the easiest thing in the world; a simple
same-Arcana rank-up fusion of Saki Mitama x Titania x Raphael would get the job
done.
Getting those passive skills onto the Cybele, however, is another story. There
is a ton of noise you'd have to deal with. Since Saki Mitama, Titania, and
Cybele are all Recovery-types, you're going to have to deal with a bunch of
unwanted Recovery and Enhance skills. Toss in the fact that passive skills
compete equally with elemental skills for Recovery-types, and we have a real
headache.
An alternate strategy would be to use different ingredients to make Cybele and
use those ingredients as filters. In our example, we want to accumulate as much
junk on the ingredients as possible with respect to a goal of transferring
specific passive skills. As a Recovery-type, good junk skills include all three
types of physical skills, which never transfer, and Light, Dark, and Bad Status
skills, which are five times less likely to be transferred than passive skills
are.
Therefore, if we can come up with ingredients for Cybele of those inheritance
types and put our desired skills on them, while loading up the rest of the
skill slots for them with assorted junk, we'll likely save a lot of time in the
Velvet Room as a result.
So, to carry through with my example, one possible formula would be: Nebiros x
Arahabaki x Mother Harlot, two Bad Status-types and a Dark-type. A simple way
to get the skills on our Titania to one of these ingredients would be Titania x
Ubelluris = Nebiros.
