But what is the point of that? Do you like actually get to play as them or something?
The point is to advance the plot.
As you get farther into the game you will come to realize that you NEED to recruit certain characters.
If you were to recruit no characters, you would not even make it past chapter 2, as you would be unable to complete the Georama Requirements.
You are not able to directly play as the recruited characters. You can however place one character into your "party".
Some characters have special abilities.
For example, Cedric is a good character, as his ability makes it so when a Wrench/Sword levels up, you gain an additional Synthesis point.
Cedric can also repair your weapons or refuel your robot while in a dungeon (if in your party). It costs some of the characters AP to use an ability, but the characters AP will regenerate slowly while they are not in your party.
