I've tried mashing random buttons while in dead locks and can't figure out how to win them. Dead locks usually happens with enemy generals and officers. The enemy just breaks through my guard/ defence.
Ok it really helps to have a fast button pressing finger. When you get into a deadlock just keep pressing square as fast as you can and don't let up on it.. Then you should be able able to break them but you need to press fast.
