There are 5 slots on the Alchemy wheel. On each one is a color representing an element:

Gray (Blank)
Green (Wind)
Yellow (Earth)
Blue (Water)
Red (Fire)

On each ingredient card is also a color (save for several which are gray). If you match the color on the card with the color on the wheel (ex: match a yellow card with the Earth element), the Ether level will increase by 10, and the effects might change. The gray slot will change the ether level randomly, either up or down by a random amount, or not at all.

If you hit the wrong element, one of two things will happen. Nothing, or the ether level will go down. The ether level will only go down if you hit the element on the wheel directly after the one you're trying for (ex: hitting the fire slot with a blue card). In the case of a red card, the level will go down if you hit the wind circle.

You also have the option of doing co-op synthesis with your teammates. Each one has a different effect (such as increasing or decreasing the ether level, or changing the wheel to display all one element). You can do co-op by hitting the square button. You can do this once per ingredient (or only once for the whole synthesis if you choose "random synthesis").

Answer

If you notice, there is a color behind each ingredient (Yellow, Green, Blue and Red).

If you hit the element which corresponds to that color (Fire-Red, Wind-Green, etc.), E-level increases by 10.
If you hit the opposite instead, it will go down by the same amount.
