Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude

Larry Loveage is pale, has a big head, and looks as if he stands about four feet tall. Despite his poor appearance, Larry is on a mission. He wants to be on the all new reality show "Swingles," but the only way he can get on the show is to bring tokens of affection from girls at his college. How, you may ask, does Larry receive these tokens of affection? Well, bluntly, HE HAS SEX WITH GIRLS...or at least tries to. This is the story of Larry Loveage, nephew of the famed Larry Laffer, and his quest to find true love...or to get laid.

Story: 6/10
As a HUGE fan of the insane "Leisure Suit Larry" series, my expectations for this game were quite high. I wanted a good ol' adventure game. Instead I was disappointed. The story line is kind of cheesy. It seemed to me like Vivendi-Universal was trying to make "Larry" more modern by throwing a reality show into the mix. Although humorous at times, this story was quite boring. The past "Larry" games were not all about Larry trying to get laid...they actually had a plot to them.

Gameplay: 7/10
While you are physically controlling Larry, the controls are quite easy. The mini-games are very redundant. Most consist of pushing the correct button as it flashes on the screen. Some consist of running around to stop feces or paper airplanes from being thrown at you. I wish there was more variation in the mini-games. It was all very repetitive, though some of them were quite amusing, one in particular, consisting of spanking a girl to get her 'all warmed up.' Playing 'strip quarters' was quite entertaining the whole way through though! At any random time, you can hit the X button to make Larry fart. I laughed at that, for about 5 minutes...then I got tired of hearing it. Conversation in this game is done in a humorous manner though. Basically, a window will pop up at the bottom of the screen with a cute little smiling sperm that you control by moving him up and down. While doing this, you have to try to avoid the red icons and try to land on the green ones. Red = bad conversation and green = good conversation. If you hit a red beer icon, Larry's alcohol gauge starts to fill up and the sperm becomes harder to control. It gets irritating quite quickly. The load time in this game is AWFUL...and I mean AWFUL! I do not see why it would take so long to load a game like this, because there isn't much too each area of the game.

Graphics: 7/10
I wasn't shocked or in awe of the graphics. They seemed pretty standard to me. I was, in fact, shocked at how much nudity this game actually showed! The most appealing part of this game was the fact that everything moved according to the actions that were being performed. Example: A trampoline jumping contest! Need I say more? I don't think so...

Sound: 6/10
It's nice to be able to eavesdrop on the conversations that are going on around you. Some of those NPCs have some interesting things to say! The language usage in this game is staggering. I lost count at how many times the F-word was uttered. The background sounds of the different areas were OK at best. Nothing really caught my ear though.

Replay Value: 4/10
Sadly, this game is extremely short and there isn't too much replay value left after you have beaten it, aside from one conversation that was cut out of the original game. Secret Tokens are the only reason I gave this a 4 rating. Throughout the game, you can find tokens that you can use to unlock special parts of the game...but most are just revamps of mini-games, and by the time you have completed the game, you really don't want to play any more of them. You can also buy new loading screens, and you will probably need them too. Since the load time in this game is so bad, you are going to want something new to look at from time to time.

Rent or Buy?
Rent this game before you buy it. If you are a fan of the classic "Leisure Suit Larry" games, I am afraid that you will be quite disappointed. If graphic depictions of sex and nudity are your thing, you might like it if you can get past all the flaws and repetition of this game. Although a delightful game with quite a few humorous moments, this game failed miserably in the story and the gameplay. But...if all you are looking for is sex and vulgarity, then this is a bull's-eye.
