Micro Machines V4

"Multi-player gold mine"

V4 is a really good game on the PS2, I'd like to pick up the PSP version just to see what the other reviewers are talking about. Since I've purchased it a month ago I've easily logged 30 hours on it with my buddies screaming at each other, memorizing turns, racking up points, mastering weapons... there's a lot of fun to be had.

If you've never played a micro machines game (to include the brilliant but over looked PS gem "micro maniacs") you are put in control of a matchbox car and race mini circuits throughout themed tracks (bedroom, pool table, kitchens, museums, you name it...) There are power ups to be used to inflict damage on the other opponents and the tracks have many points to fall (or be bumped) off and get snagged on. Races are against 3 opponents and you have to keep within a screens length of the leader or you'll be bumped off the race until only one car remains on the screen. That car gets two points (second gets one, the other cars lose points) and the first person to 8 points wins that race, and they get a new car.

The graphics in V4 are very good, but you won't care, because the gameplay is where it's at.

The game play is fast and spot on. Every car type handles differently and every track supports like 40 different cars; or some ludicrous number. Many are only different by paint, but with some 400 total cars, you'll see your share of variety. Power ups are acquired on the screen by running over them, after which you can destroy your opponents. Of course they can hit you too, and if you do get hit, you'll lose your top speed and maybe a wheel! Which effects your ability to control yourself, but doesn't knock you out of the race.

If you do get knocked out of the race, you don't just sit back and watch, you can target the other racers with various themed objects (coins, washers, darts, bouncy balls, peas etc) and deal damage from beyond the grave. Races typically take 8 - 20 seconds to a point winner; and over all races last around 5 minutes. It makes for a fun and visceral experience.

I picked this up at Blockbuster for about 15 bucks, I think it's 30 new. If you have some friends and some time you should give this game a shot.
