Timesplitters: Future Perfect
M32atDon's Review
I had been waiting for this game for about 2-3 years. I was expecting the same old game with a different story. Well I thought wrong, because this is game is much better then I had hoped it would be. If you are reading this, and plan thinking about getting this yourself, then read this review thoroughly and think twice afterwards. Get ready to be sent into the future!
Graphics: 9/10
The graphics in this game are a little improvement from Timesplitters 2. Nothing to cheer about. I am glad that EA managed to keep the graphics more or less better than the prequel game. There are some good shooting effects, where as smoke comes from the barrel of the gun when shooting. The blood in the game splatters on the screen, gushes out of characters and looks very good if you have an appetite for slaughtering. Although sometimes the game has some graphic errors (or glitches in this case) I don't really mind. Timeplitters: Future Perfect has an excellent graphics engine.
Sound Effects: 8/10
The sound effects in this game are average for most First Person shooters. People grunt when being shot, explosions fill your ears when using grenades, and gun shots have a different sound when shooting on a different turf (ex. walls, ground, metal bridges, people, etc.). Also, when you walk on different terrain the footsteps also make a different sound (such as metal, dirt, concrete, etc.). The sound in this game for each detail is well done.
Music: 10/10
Music in this game fits different levels perfectly. Some songs are so addicting and give me such an adrenaline rush that I go on a mad shooting frenzy. Yes, it is that good. You can choose your own tune, or use the stages recommended one for Arcade mode. Free Radical put in well-variated music for various themes. For example, the music for the mansion level is great and fills your mind with scary thoughts as you peer around corners. This game has an excellent choice of music.
Modes of Play: 9/10
There is a sufficient amount of modes of play that you can exploit, that have you playing even longer than expecting. You may play Story mode, Challenge mode, Arcade League mode, and Regular Arcade mode. Regular Arcade mode is where you do what you want, when you want. There are 14 modes in Arcade mode to play (Deathmatch, Capture the Bag, Assault, etc.). There are enough game modes to keep you wanting this game even more.
Storyline: 9/10
The storyline in this game is much better than Timesplitters 2; which dropped you off in random places with no plot. But in TS3, there actually is a storyline that follows through the game, and all its cutscenes. The game has humor that fits in the story, and sneaks itself in there. The plot of the whole game is brilliant.
Weapons: 8/10
Weapons have improved since TS2, making it a lot better. There is a large selection of weapons you can use. You can hold up to 6 weapons along with your fists. There are magnificent weapons that enhance gameplay, such as baseball bats, grenades, and a new weapon called the "Injector" which makes your enemies slowly inflate then explode into a bloody pulp. Yes, these weapons cause a lot of blood...you have been warned.
Story Mode Levels: 9/10
The Story mode levels are long and awesome. They have very nice detail to them, making the graphics seem slightly real in some ways. You get to play in a vast amount of areas such as on another planet, in a science laboratory, under water, and many more. The variety is almost as good as Timesplitters 2. Since this game follows an actual plot, unlike Timesplitters 2, you play in levels that link to each other and have significance to the story.
Multiplayer Maps: 7/10
Multiplayer maps have slightly went down on my ratings. They differ from TS2's "feel". TS2 felt like it had more open maps, and they really did. Explore maps such as a subway station, a mexican mission, a disco club, a blimp, etc. Although the maps are not as good as the prequel game, the maps in this game have more interactive parts to it. For example, you can pull a lever at the subway station and this will make trains run across the tracks very fast and killing anyone who is standing in front of them. The maps in this game are slightly worse than TS2's, but I'm sure anybody would enjoy them.
Characters: 10/10
There are a total of 150 characters to play as. About 50 or 60 of them you have to unlock (which adds more play time to the game). Each character has their own abilities, and phrases. They have their unique looks, which I think is most important. Splendid character design.
Gameplay: 9/10
Yes, the gameplay, of course. This is obviously the best part of the game! I gave this a 9 out of 10 due to certain glitches. The objectives in the game are fun, the AI is smart, and the gameplay is sheer brilliance. Experience the thrill of escaping the ones who want to kill you, tracking down the one you want to kill, and surviving the game. This is simply the best FPS for the PS2 and the most fun you will have killing virtually.
Online Play: 7/10
I gave online play a 7 for now since it is still lagging a bit, and the connection doesn't work well. When you get matched up with players around your level the game really shines. Overall, online play is a great extra for this game but is not needed for solo play.
Overall: 10/10
I decided to give this game a 10 overall. It is a masterpiece. I suggest this game over any other PS2 first person shooters.
Why is this rated Mature?
I'm sure many people ask why this game is rated Mature as opposed to the first two games being rated Teen. The answer is simple; shooting, lots of blood, killing animals, beheading enemies, torture, etc. This game is very mature and should not be played by younger audiences. You might ask "Does the M rating enhance the game in any way?". The mature rating makes this game a little better than the first two, but only by a little bit. The decision should be in the gameplay and not how much mature content is in the game. Timesplitters 2 is equally good to Timeplitters:Future Perfect despite the ratings.
Rent or buy?
I rented it first, and I'm glad I did. Story mode takes about 4-6 hours the first time. I highly recommend renting it first. Spend money on renting it to see what it's like, instead of paying the whole price just to find out you don't like it. RENT IT FIRST.
