Fighter Maker 2
Review by mabdog666
"it's complicated, but if it's used correctly it can be great"
This is not the kind of "pick up and play" game. I recommend that if you buy it, READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL. That's the first thing I did, and It really helped.
This game is not for every gamer. you need patience, persistence, and quite a bit of skill to get anything good done.
When you first get it, make something simple. Maybe like, 10 combos and a few grabs. From there just work your way up. Also a good thing to do is use a sample fighting style and tune it to fit what you're doing.
Others have complained about the interface, and I'd have to say... it is pretty bad. If you're willing to look past the somewhat annoying interface, and the fact that it can take more than half an hour to create a cool looking throw, you can enjoy it.
The thing I like about it most is that you can pretty much create any grab/throw/grapple from any game. And the fact that you can create your best friends, invite them over, and beat each other up with the characters.
ok, so...
GRAPHICS: 3/10
It's a pretty old game, but that's no excuse for the incredibly bad graphics, and the 6 boring levels. Also, The arenas work like you're on a treadmill with a background. It looks terrible, and they really should have figured out a better way to create the arenas. Anything that you don't create in this game is pretty lame.
SOUND: 5/10
I normally play fighter maker on mute, and listen to music. The thing is, without something else to listen to, or do.. It can seem really boring. This is mainly because there is no music in the editing menus, and there are just very annoying beeps whenever you do anything. The actual ingame music is ok. I'm not complaining. The thing is, it just kind of goes right through your ears. It's not really even noticable. The sound effects are what they are. They're sound effects. There are enough to choose from. I would be fine with a few more of them but for the most part, it's fine.
GAMEPLAY:
well, here's the thing; If you put a lot of time and effort into this game, you can make a really good fighting game. If you make a few characters in an hour, the gameplay will suck. Also, the sample characters suck. you can make characters way better than this
CONTROL: 10/10
The controls are fully customizable. The thing is, by default, there are 3 buttons. a punch, a kick, and a guard. And that's pretty lame. But if you think about it, you're really not limited to just that. like, for example mine is
X = Grab (guard+punch)
Square = Heavy punch (punch+kick)
Triangle = Light punch (punch)
Circle = Kick (kick)
L1/R1 = Guard (Guard)
so that means, if you use your brain a little, you can really create any different control scheme. The only thing that's kind of a drag, is that the only combination you can have for a grab is Guard+Punch. But that doesn't really matter. I just made a grab button to make up for it.
CUSTOMIZATION: 9/10
You can really do a lot with this system. the appearance creation thing is cool, and so is the ability to make 4 costumes for each person you make. There is no body adjustment, though.. so you can't make fat people, or really muscly people. Also there's no body scaling. There are 100 hit motions you can have in your character.. which is good enough for me. There are only 6 grabs per person.. which kind of makes me mad.. but.. It's not really that big a deal. Other than that you can do pretty much everything.
OVERALL: 7/10
This is only for a select group of people, and many just can't get it. but if you can, you can really enjoy this.
