So does Lucas Art's Star Wars Star Fighter come in as the best and first great Star Wars game, yes and no.
Looking at the history of Lucas Art's Star Wars games could probably make a gamer sick. Thinking of games like The Phantom Menace and Jedi Power Battles is kinda like the gaming equavilant of a really bad B movie. Well it seems as though someone is Lucas Art's has grown a brain and decided to make a game that is not only fun to play but that also has a great storyline, likable characters, and plenty of action. Star Wars Star Fighter is a great game that shows the power of the PS2 and finally gives owners of the new system some great gameplay.
Graphics:
Star Wars Star Fighter hits the mark in the graphics department. While not as good as the models seen in The Bouner or a few other titles the graphics look good and the game runs smooth even with multiple enemies on the screen. The only real problem with Star Fighter's graphics are a few of the textures are a little bland.
Sound:
Well I guess when you look at Lucas Arts having been a pioneer in digital sound the sound is of course great. The swoosh of ships to the hum of lazers to the rocking jar of huge explosions the sound is top notch. Even the voice acting is good.
Gameplay:
Just when you think Star Fighter could not get any better it does. This is where Star Fighter really excels. While some may not agree I feel this game has the best gameplay on the PS2 so far. You pilot 3 different space vehicles while playing as three different characters. You play Rys Dallows a Nabooian pilot, Nym a space pilot, and finally another girl who was working for the Trade Federation but now fights with the characters. The gameplay ranges from simple attack and destroy to escorting boats to even helping one character through a narrow canion. The game gives the player plenty of variety and a lot of action. The story moves along at a reasonable pace using in game scenes and FMV segments. Although the gameplay in Star Fighter is great there is not enough of it. There are fourteen missions which may seem like plenty although they can be fairly easy to finish. Although you can replay missions to complete bonus quests and unlock new missions so all together you get a fair amount of gameplay.
Star Wars Star Fighter is a fun and exciting title that should not be missed by any gamer.
