"Definately worth a rent"

Graphics – 10
Graphics-wise, this game takes the cake. Nice, crisp, clear graphics; no other versions of Quake can touch this. Not even Quake 3 Arena for the PC looks this good. The colors are beautiful, the frame rate is awesome. Even with 4 players, slow-down is a thing of the past.

Sound – 10
Another perfect score here. Great music, spectacular effects. This games deserves its grade.

Characters – 10
Of course there are characters to choose from. But here’s the cool thing. There’s a campaign mode in which you can select your guy, and kinda level him up. Say you have a guy with a max health of 95%. Well, by going through campaign mode, you can level him up to a max health off 100%, 110% perhaps higher. Each character has there own little differences like one might be faster, one may be stronger one can obtain the most health. Every time you complete a tier (a group of levels usually around 5 or 6) you level your guy up in all areas, not just one. As you go through the levels, you gain playable characters which are available in both campaign and multiplayer mode (called arena mode in this game). And when you bring your campaign player into arena mode, you get all the benefits that you gained while leveling up.

Control – 6
To every really great game, there is at least one downfall. And with this game, it’s the control. The control style in this game resembles that of unreal tournament for the PS2 where you have a preset of control schemes to choose from. There is one control scheme that simply baffles me. You can set the left analog to look around and the face buttons to move. But for some reason, they programmed it so that X is to move backwards and Triangle moves forwards. Just the opposite of what it should be. I guess you can get used to any style. So once you get past the control, there’s only one more bad area of this game, read on to find out.

Replay – 9
Given this games incredible graphics, sweet sound and fairly good controls mixed in with the awesome multiplayer fun, this game is definitely worth at least a rent. The other bad thing, the loading time. This game does take an ungodly amount of loading time. Expect to wait 1-2 minutes for a single match to load.

Overall – 9
I do hope that when the PS2 hard drive is released this November it’ll cache some of this games information reducing loading time. Once that happens and you get used to the control of this game, I’m confident this game will be one of the best FPS games for the PS2.
