All-Star Baseball 2002
Review by kidphoenix
"A good series gone bad..."
I used to look at the reviews, and despise those who gave low scores to a great game. Let me apologize now for those of you who actually like this game. If you owned ANY of the n64 versions of the game, you would understand. Not only did acclaim ditch the fans on n64 entirely, but they probably angered the ones who bought ps2 for baseball (good thing, it's a ps2).
First, the graphics are low quality when compared to the other ps2 games. Heck, the graphics are parallel, if not worse than on the n64. Everything is small and fuzzy when compared to the previous ASB games. The game has glitches galore in fielding. Graphics get a 6. The low score is mainly because of the abundant glitches.
Sound is pretty decent if you just want a baseball game. If you are a baseball fanatic, the commentary will make you SICK. I give the sound a 7. There really aren't many sounds that are needed to give a baseball game good sounds, but I wasn't really impressed.
Controls are much worse if you were used to the previous games in the series. If you haven't played them before, then it may be good. Fielding is terrible. Outfielders make a relaxed throw all of the time, which gets many slow batters easy doubles. Control may be good for people new to baseball games, but because I play them all of the time, I have to give the controls a 5. This rating is only because I played the previous games. A friend of mine never plays games, and picked right up on the controls, so it may be acceptable for people who don't play games much.
Fun factor is high for people new to baseball video games. My friend really enjoyed himself, which was good to see. He probably couldn't understand why I complained so much. Replay value is nonexistant. I borrowed this game for a friend who was on his way to returning it, and I couldn't stand playing even one game. Thank God I didn't purchase this.
If you just want to find a baseball game for the ps2, then feel free. It won't be that bad. However, I think that you'd be better off getting MLB on ps one. If you are a fan of the series as I am, and think that you're getting an improvement over the other games, think again. I'm sorry acclaim, but you disappointed me.
