"Not a Game for Everyone"

After reading a good deal of reviews about “Rez” I was hyped to play it. I was sure it was going to be a good game because it was a unique game by Sega, on of the most trusted names in the business. So I checked out the only copy at my local Hollywood Video and pooped it into my PS2. I was left in a great deal of disappointment.

The story is that you are a hacker trying to get into a system and you have the battle these enemies while inside the computer. Every level ends with a rather interesting boss. The bosses are rather basic and I kept getting the feeling I have fought them in other games before.

Gameplay- 4/10
You go down a set track shooting everything in your path. You can shoot up to six enemies at one time by holding down the fire button and moving the toggle over the enemies and releasing. Quite basic like most Sega games and I think a little too easy.

Visuals- 8/10
These are very unique visuals and have to real competition. The only reason I gave it an 8 instead of a 10 is because I think they could have thrown in something to make the environment look better at times. When you enter a structure the structure itself is very detailed but everything inside and outside is pretty boring.

Music- 6/10
Sorry but I am just not a fan of techno music. And that is all this game has to offer.

Sound effects- 4/10
I really did not understand why this area is praised so much. Everything has a sound effect that is supposed to add to the music with the more shots you link. It didn't seem like that to me.

Replay value- 6/10
There are several different things to unlock including a level so this department isn’t that bad if you can bring yourself to like the game. The challenge in getting these is not that high though and I went through the game very quickly.

Overall- 6/10
Defiantly do yourself a favor and play the game before you buy it. I know Sega is a good company but this game is not for everyone. If you like techno music you will get more joy out of it than myself but if you don’t you will probably feel similar to how I do. You either hate the game or love it and this gamer hates it.
