Rygar: The Legendary Adventure
Review by SuperLuigi
"Fun game DRENCHED in Greek Mythology"
Rygar; It used to be an old arcade game, my sources tell me, I sure as hell hav never heard of it, but from the looks of this, it musta been awesome. This game has all you can ask for, mythological storyline (more on that later) A cool charecter design, and an awesome weapon to throw around at stuff (more on that too).
Graphics; 10/10
This is the stuff dreams are made from. Remember FFX? Well the charecter models look on par with that (sure, that was a year ago, but people are still drooling, so I think it's a fine comparision). The Diskarmor is also well done, with each one having a designated and different look as well as fine animations for each weapon. The enimies, especially bosses, are very well detailed and I've found that certain enimies have their heads cleaned right off by the diskarmor. The backrounds are well detailed and things you knock down with your Diskarmor look satisfiyingly brutal. All in all, this is a good graphical showcase for the PS2.
Story; 9/10
You may look at it at first and go ''Princess captured... save her... save world...'' and yawn, but what caught me was the deep integration of Greek mythology. This may not throw others like it gets me, but I absolutely love the way Tecmo added well-told myths, as well as a few spins of their own, into the game.
Gameplay: 11/10 (think ''Spinal Tap'')
11/10... riiight. OK, let me explain; this game is just so freaking fun, you can't describe it with words. Diskarmor is fun to throw around, it's cool to knock stuff down, and whipping your enemies is satisfying. There's a cool segment about an hour into the game where you have to escape certain doom from a spiked celing and floors going up at supersonic speed by... wait for it... knocking down whole walls! Am I sick? Maybe? Am I entertained? Certainly.
Sound: 10/10
The sound in this game is... surprizingly good. There's an archastra hanging out in the backround, the music matches the game, and when the Diskarmor smashes into something unbreakable, you'll know it by sound. The voice acting is good, even though the guy chosen for Rygar sounds like a manlier version of the announcer on Saturday Night Live.
Rent or Buy: People who want a good action game, nab it. But for anyone that doesn't enjoy hacking a things with metal things, stay away. That's what this game is.
