Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly
Review by JRB
"The PS1 games were superior"
I bought Playstation 2 and went straight for this game. I loved the first 3 and was anticipating something terrific. I was terribly disappointed. How could a game on this platform come out so bad? What were the game testers doing when they were testing this game? Didn't they report the problems? Any one of the people who have posted at this site could have reported the, too numerous to mention glitches in this game.
I did not finish this game, in fact I didn't even finish the first level. I played it for 1 hour and put it back in the case. It was returned the next day, and luckily for me I bought the last copy the day before and the store couldn't make an exchange. I told them it kept freezing up and was damaged. I got Metal Gear Solid- Sons of Liberty instead. I'm not disappointed.
Can I give an accurate account of this game with so little time playing it? I think so.
I experienced the same problems everyone else posting here did. Bad frame rate, sound effect glitches, odd graphics, system freezes and long load times. The world I played was more expansive, but that just placed the gems farther apart and didn't add anything to the gameplay. The controls are not near as good as on the 3 previous games. I felt Spyro's turning radius was way too large. Anyone notice that Sparx didn't seem to eat some of the butterflies. In the original games Insomniac went to great lengths to make sure the sfx and graphics were right on the money in this respect. In this game the butterflies just disappeared.
What I haven't seen posted is any reference to the dumbing down of this game. I'll admit the first 3 weren't Shakespeare, but from what I saw this game was made for 4 year olds. They're the only ones who won't get frustrated by the incompetance of this game.
When Insomniac dropped Spyro, I was a little miffed. Then again I thought a fresh approach might be good for this series. But what we got was the same old thing, but done poorly. The original 3 on the good old PS1 were better looking, better playing and far more fun. Go buy them for your PS2, they're worth it.
Insomniac must be annoyed that their creation has been ruined in this way, then again they're probaby laughing all the way to the bank with their profits from the brilliant Ratchet and Clank.
Spyro...RIP!!!!
