DDRMAX: Dance Dance Revolution
Review by Gandalf the Grey
"Nice. Very Nice"
INTRODUCTION---
I first saw Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) in an arcade. I had never even thought to try it out. Looked fun but, heck, it was expensive. Well, here I am a few later with a PS2 and it is like one of my favorite games.
One of my friends had the game on PS2 and got me to try it out on his PS2. Man, I had a great time but I was really bad. It wa still fun so I bought the game and haven't regretted it for one minute. Hope this review will tell you why.
Story--- N/A
Absolutely none. Heck, it's a Dancing Game. What do you expect?
Music--- 10/10
Most games music is one of the lower categories in a review but music is what makes up the game. The artists chosen for this performed well. Most of the songs are great. Some have more of a beat then others. Some are just hilarious. Yes, there are a few obscene songs but most of them are pretty good and sound great. A few of my favorites are Dark Black Forest, Look to the Sky, Candy Star, and Midnight Blaze. There are so many to choose from and so many more to unlock. This is easily the game's strongest point.
Gameplay--- 9/10
Yes, the gameplay is great; that is, if you have a Dance Pad. I'll discuss both scenarios. Dance Pad or No Dance Pad.
SCENARIO 1- With a Dance Pad, the game is at it's highest. You get to actually dance! It is fun as well as great exercise. With a workout mode as well as a game mode, you can have loads of fun. Basically, this game was made to be used with a Dance Pad. You have all the basic keys of a regular controller. ^ (up) v (down) > (right) and < (left). Then you also have X, Triangle, Circle, and Square. You control everything from a Dance Pad. I own the dance pad.
SCENARIO 2- Without a Dance Pad, you are just wasting your money unless you just want to listen to the songs. This game is pretty much junk unless you have a Dance Pad. Believe me, the gameplay is fun but, well, you are pretty much obligated to buy the dance pad. Believe me, you can get the dance pad for like 15 bucks but, hey, it's 15 extra backs. That is the only reason I lowered the gameplay rating.
What goes on is you have an arrow bar at the top with up, down, left, and right. Arrows pointing in the corresponding shape-things scroll upward and you have to hit the corresponding key at the exact time. Believe me, you get MAX 300 and Candy Star going and you've certainly got your work cut out for you! It is very fun though!
OVERALL--- 10/10
With sound and Good Gameplay (which are pretty much the only things to go by since graphics arn't very involved in this game), it is a great game that I am proud to have in my PS2 game collection. It is great for parties and big events.
It is worth the forty dollars and I think you could get it used for cheaper. The dance pad is also worth it.
If you decide to by it, good luck and have fun dancing. :)
