Aliens Versus Predator: Extinction
Review by Xenom73
"Aliens have never been so..."
Im a fan of the Aliens series, mostly because they're pretty cool, and ill watch Predator if its on, So when I saw they made a new Pred vs Alien for ps2 I HAD to check it out, and yep I was disapointed.
This is an RTS, a game genre which Im pretty fond of most of the time, but this game is pretty awful, so lets sum it up.
Graphics 5/10 - Ok I admit the 3d models look great, BUT when your actually playing the game they are far too small to enjoy, and the aliens look so similar you have to click on them to tell them apart (exceptions for ravager carrier and queen which are tall...especially carrier with its big glowing spikes and all) AND when you have Many aliens fighting at once they all merge together into a big spike ball which spazes out, very annoying.
There were 3 camera views which change the size from Good, to bad, to REALLY BAD, sadly in the only view where the graphics look good the view is so small that you just cant play properly.
Gameplay 3/10 - The controls were horrible, O should never be the default button for movement, but irrelevent it takes you awhile to figure out how your going to move all your units, first few missions I had a ''Lead'' alien with a bunch on follow, the major flaw here was the Leader wouldnt attack anything untill it reached its destination, thankfully the others would run around mindlessly killing.
After that I found the Double click select all movement, this is easier but worse in the fact that NO ONE attacks on site, they must reach their destination first.
Originallity 7/10 - Ok this is where the game shines, not mission wise mind you but for building, in no other game has there been such use of corpses, atleast not to my knowledge, Preds rip off skulls for money, and aliens impregnate corpses to make new aliens, its great!
Humans however have a very stupid system you might as well call mining, even though not really, its nothing new or interesting.
There is also no system for gaining units, all units are independant of eachother and you can have them irrelevent of other issues except for level and cash, and even though I like the animation of the drop ship and the pods its still pretty cheap.
Sound - 6/10 The sounds are good, recreated from the movies and all that, but they are ANNOYING especially the victory roars from the preds, and predaliens, most of all preds when they rip off the skulls and SCREAM LOUDLY, the only true way to enjoy the game is to knock the sounds way down.
Movies - 0/10 THIS ANNOYED ME, no cinema scenes in the entire game, not even for victory! I played through all seven levels and they dont even offer me a short cut scene with my species standing over the corpses of the other species? Not even that?! Let alone an epilogue movie to tell me what they do now that they've won?
This was disappointing and took A LOT away from the game.
Replayability - 0/10 The game has no multiplayer, which is practically necessary for a good RTS game, it has no custom mode, or really anything else to enjoy in the game, all there is are 21 missions, 7 per species, they are pretty much all ''Just go kill the enemy'' with few exceptions, Id never expect to play the game twice.
Rent or Buy? - Id suggest playing it while your friend rents it or something, but if your a desperate fan of pred vs aliens or one of the movies I guess you should go rent it from the ''cheap'' rental place in town, save yourself a few bucks.
