Chaos Legion
Review by Naru2005
"Disappointed with DMC2? Get this game instead!"
Keep in mind that I am not completely finished with this game.. I had to make a review for such a great game by Capcom!
Introduction
Ever since Devil May Cry was released, a number of gamers were thrilled to see something made up by Capcom. However, over 14 months later, its sequel was a disappointment. Chaos Legion is something you would expect to make up for the disappointment of Devil May Cry 2. It combines the elements of different games in one! This game is available for the Sony PlayStation 2 and Windows PC
Story
You are Sieg Warheit, who must pursue a old friend from doing certain things. The story picks up in this gothic action game later in the game. There's not much voice acting in this game(a little more than DMC1), but at least you can hear how some of the characters sound like. I would not go further in telling the story, as it will be spoiled.
Gameplay
This game has Zero Slowdowns and 1-second load times. People who say there can't be too many AI's on screen or else there would be slowdowns on the PS2, those at Capcom who programmed this game disagrees with that.
Then, shame on people who say this is a ''rip-off'' of Devil May Cry and didn't like it. This is a game made by Capcom. Did Capcom not produced/developed Devil May Cry? This game makes up for the disappointment we've had with DMC2. You, Seig, needs some serious aiding in your quest. In order to do so, you must equip different legions to help you during your battle. This game combines DMC, Dynasty Warriors, and some RPG-type elements. Which means, you'll spent a number of hours leveling up your legions to make them as strong as possible so you can take down even the most toughest enemies without any trouble. For every level you enter, there are a number of enemies you must defeat. There's a target also. Reach the target and kill it is a win. Near the end, there is the most toughest enemy on that level, which is a boss(or bosses). So to sum it up, every level has at least one boss.
The challenge compared to Devil May Cry...
This game is hard, no doubt about that. Hardcore gamers of Devil May Cry could probably wipe out half this game without any trouble at all. It doesn't mean this is as hard as DMC, but it's pretty hard. You start out with a Life Gauge and a Soul Gauge. The Soul is your Legions life, while the Life is your own. Every time you defeat enemies, you receive Soul points that will recover your legions life. You'll also receive other items as well...such as refreshments.. and such..
Graphics = Mindblowing, Sound = Average, Music = Excellent
Before I get on with the graphics, which are brilliant in my POV, you need to make sure you are using a high-end video connection(S-Video or Component RGB) as a hookup for your PlayStation 2. Without it, you wont see the glory of the backgrounds, characters, and the incredible amount of detail that Capcom has put their effort in. The CG Movies are mindblowing as it can get better if Capcom keeps up with it. Most likely in the future, if there is a sequel for this game, Capcom could put the scenes in real time. The sound, however, is pretty average. But that wont keep you from hearing all the action that's going on. Also, you'll be surprised how lovely the ending theme sounds. The music, however, is a masterpiece. Most of the music you hear during the game are emotional, dramatic, and depressing. You may not notice it, but it really does sound that way(for me anyway).
Controls and Camera
This is where the ''DMC rip-off'' comes in mind. The controls are as easy as Devil May Cry's. One button to lock-on, one to slash, one to summon legions, and so on.. The camera is not as bad as Devil May Cry 2's, but it does get irritating if the camera is facing you, not allowing to see what's in front of your face. I personally like the controls easy to adapt to(unlike Alien Resurrection for the PS1).
The Ups and Downs
Pros:
+ Very Good Graphics, 10/10
+ Excellent Music 10/10
+ Mediocre Sound 7/10
+ Great Gameplay 9/10
+ Good Storyline 8/10
+ Easy-to-Adapt Controls 9/10
+ Good Replay 8/10
Cons:
- Bad Camera 5/10
Final Rating: 82.5/10, Pretty Good. I will notch it up a point for Capcom. So 9/10.
Replay = Good, Buy or Rent? = Buy
Most of the unlockables can be unlocked by beating the game once. Others you'll have to play on harder difficulties. You'll definitely spend more time on this than Devil May Cry 2. There's not only one playable character, there's a second you can unlock, and it's a girl! Buy this game, definitely. It only costs $39.99 at retail stores now that they made a price drop(not at Capcom's website though, which says $49.95..Greedy for Profit, eh, Capcom?). You'll enjoy this game which lasts you for a while.
If you loved Devil May Cry, you'll love Chaos Legion!
