The King of Fighters 2000/2001
Review by MangaManX
"SNK is back on the scene!"
After a pretty long U.S. dry spell, SNK has finally returned and started off what will hopefully be a series of great PS2 games with updated versions of KOF 2K and 2K1. The King of Fighters series has always been one of the best 2-D fighters around, and this compilation is no exception!
Gameplay - 9 - The KOF gameplay is as solid and as fun as ever. The characters are fast moving, but not overly so, with unique and interesting movesets. The engine is great, with a perfect mix of standard 2-D fare (array of punches and kicks, special moves, super moves) and unique concepts like the helper character Strikers, Armor and Counter power-up modes, and customizable 4-player Striker and fighter team modes. The bottom line is that it is fun to play, and that is what matters more than anything else in gaming.
Visuals - 8 - Many people feel the KOF series looks a bit dated, and to some extent that is true. However, the visuals are certainly not bad, in fact they are quite good. The characters look great because of unique, cool designs that exude a lot of personality. The special moves and effects look terrific. Its not as fluid in the animation department as games like Guilty Gear, but its still great 2-D fare.
Audio - 10 - The voices and sound effects are clear and very cool sounding. There are two choices of music: Original and Arrange. Everything's great in this aspect.
Other Aspects - 10 - The KOF series has always had a long-running, flowing storyline. These two games continue and finish the NESTS story arc which began in KOF '99 (which saw U.S. release on the PS1 and Dreamcast). The characters and story have always been worthy of praise. The extras are cool, like hidden characters, hidden Strikers, and all the opening movies from previous KOF games. Its an incredible mix that has always made KOF and other SNK games as unique and interesting as they are.
All in all, this is a great game package. Many people look down on KOF, mainly for being 2-D, and won't accept it because it doesn't have the graphic fluidity of games like Guilty Gear. However, if you're looking for a great 2-D fighting game with a solid, fun engine and awesome characters, this is perfect for you. Of course for KOF fans this is a must-have. Definitely worth every penny. Keep it up SNK, you are definitely reborn hard!
