Cabela's Dangerous Hunts
Review by Frowdo
"Shooting Yourself In The Foot"
Concept: Scope out exotic locals in search of some good ole fashioned hunting. The catch? The hunted fight back. In Cabela's Dangerous Hunts you become the hunted as you go to a variety of places from Africa to Colorado hunting anything from Wild Boar to Bears.
Graphics: 5/10
I did rent this on PS/2 didn't I, not PS/1? The graphics are really bland and repetative. A lot of the places look very similar. The best part of the graphics would probably be the gun. It's pretty detailed and decent looking. Other than that it's really dated.
Sound: 6/10
It's as expected for a hunting game where you are out in the middle of nowhere with. No background music, some nature like sounds and a little animal sounds. Not the greatest but you don't really expect much more which sticking with the basics is a good thing. If you need a little pick me up just plop a CD to listen to while you are playing.
Controls: 8/10
Pretty tight, probably the best part of the game. The scope is the L2 Trigger and firing is the L1 button so both are right there. Also switching between your rifle and a defensive weapon can be done by pushing the analog sticks down. The movement of your character is rather realistic as well. You aren't like some army grunt in this game, you are just a regular outdoors man, so your movement is more clunky and slow than other FPS, but that's the point.
Playability: 1/10
Painfully boring is kind of an understatement. The levels which you would think are wide open areas are actually very small and linear. Most of the level is blocked off by brush and mountains and only holds a few path ways and a couple wide open areas. The animals on the other hand act very poorly. No matter how quiet you are or how far away you are they will more than likely charge you, or run away depending on the animal. The scents, decoys, and other misc. huting items are basically useless. Out of the different types of game play you basically have Quick Hunt and Career. The career is basically Quick Hunt except all the areas but one are locked and you have to actually pay money to buy weapons, ammo, equipment, and tags.
Overall: 3/10
If for some reason you prefer video game hunting over the real thing, or you saw the box with the guy getting mauled by the Grizzly Bear and you thought this game was cool. Please avoid at all costs. I'm sure there is a decent hunting game out there, but I can assure you this is not it. And if you are really desperate for a FPS this is a definate must skip.
Rent or Buy: Neither, unless you see if for a $1 and want to sell it to a pawn shop.
