The X-Files: Resist or Serve

"The lost episode we've been waiting for..."

I bought this game on a whim: I was an avid X-Files watcher up until the last two seasons (the show just got silly), and the price ($29.99) was very good for a new release. So I decided it was worth purchasing. I haven't finished the game yet, but I have to say it was a well spent $30. The gameplay is lacking in areas (notably the camera), but otherwise X-Files: Resist or Serve is a solid game that will entertain you.

Graphics: 8/10

While not the stunning graphics that Square might produce, they're still above average for the PS2. Some reviewers have claimed there are lip-sync issues with the characters, but I have yet to notice any such problems. In fact, I'd say the syncing is far above average. So while you won't be wowed, you definitely won't be cringing either.

Gameplay: 7/10

This, in my opinion, is the weakest area of the game. I should note, I'm including the game camera in this category since I feel it has more to do with gameplay than graphics. The camera is, like many third person games, fixed and takes AWFUL angles at times. The gameplay would have been much improved by giving the user camera control. Otherwise, the gameplay is good. The AI is decent (although not perfect). The game is fairly challenging, follows a linear path, and managed to keep you entertained.

The length seems to be not too long, but not too short. I've heard it takes about 20 hours to complete (not sure if that's as both Mulder and Scully or not) and that seems to be accurate so far. This game would have been an 8.5 or 9 easily if the game camera and the AI were improved. I also think the use of shock and surprise could have been milked a bit more. There may be more to come, but this game has yet to make me jump like Resident Evil did.

Sound: 9/10

Usage of music and sounds from the show: can't go wrong. The ambient sounds and sounds as a result of area interaction (stepping on glass, etc) was also well done. Nothing original, however, so I can't give the game a perfect score - pretty close though.

Story: 9.5/10

This is the strongest part of the game: You truly feel like you're in an episode. The story was written by X-Files Show writers, and it shows. The wry wit of Mulder, the mothering skepticism of Scully, etc. are all used as they should. I haven't finished the game yet, so I can't give this a perfect score yet, but it's got me hooked so far...

Overall: 8/10

This game doesn't knock your socks off, nor is it as addicting as games like Final Fantasy or GTA, but it delivers entertainment well worth the $30 you'll spend. If you an X-Files fan, you should own this game by now. If you're a fan of horror-survival games, this won't be Resident Evil, but it's at least worth a rental if not a trip to your local game retailer.
