The X-Files: Resist or Serve
Review by Kobyashimaru
"Trust no one...else's review!"
I am a big X Files Fan. Loved the show and the movie.
Liked the game. Thing is, I can barely even muster a 5 for it. There was alot to like about it, like the likenesses, the voice work, the writing, but, there were more than a few drawbacks.
Alot of reviews I have read left out a few things in that department.
Like, how about the constant load screens?
Go thru a door? Load screen. Reached the half way point of a long street? Load screen. Time for an FVM? Load screen. Two part FMV? Load screen in the middle. It drove me nuts.
How about the way the characters stand facing the camera, instead of eachother, while talking to eachother, and don't move at all except at the lips, during some FMV sequences?
And while other reviews have mentioned the camera, many didn't mention why it sucks. One review said the game shouldn't lose any points for the camera. Nonsence! It's being stationary is annoying enough, but in tight quarters, the camera angle changes on you and shows a reverse angle and causes you to think you're goin' in the right direction when really you aren't. This always seems to happen around the entrances/exits to rooms. Drove me batty!
And what of the sluggish controls? I can't tell you how many needless hits I've taken from creepy crawlies (dogs, zombies, Pyro, Eyeless,...)while trying to run away, because of the slow reaction time. It was maddening. Did anybody discuss this? Not that I have read.
Here is the major point of my review. This game could EASILY have been so much better, and I have NO idea why it isn't. The show has been off the air for a while, there is no new movie. Why did they not take the time they needed to make the camera better, or to improve the controls, or make it so there were fewer load screens, and better character movement during FMVs? Usually, corner cutting like that is the result of a rush to meet a deadline in coordination with a movie or some such. This game had no such issue.
A lack of these glitches would have allowd all the good stuff about the game to really shine, rather than just make it little more than barely worth finishing.
People have been giving this game sevens and the like. It is more like a 5, guys. Angel of Darkness had fewer problems.
