"Are U Ready For 2K5?"

As we approach the end of July, the pennant races are heating up and the Olympics are almost upon us. However, ESPN Videogames (the operation formerly known as Sega Sports) has forced all of these events to the back burner. It is now time to turn our minds toward America's Passion, the NFL. Training camp has yet to begin, but NFL 2K5 is already in midseason form. Once you pop in the disc you'll immediately find yourself immersed in the universe of The Worldwide Leader in Sports. Were it not for the controller in your hands, you would think it was Sunday and the NFL season was underway.

On to the breakdown:

Graphics/Presentation (10/10)--What can be said about this game that hasn't already been said? Visual Concepts has put its collective heart and soul into this project and the results couldn't be more scintillating. Nearly every player looks like their real-life counterparts. The production comes off as if ESPN did it themselves. The pre-game, halftime, and post-game segments are top-flight. All that is missing is NFL Countdown and NFL Primetime. Virtual Chris Berman is every bit as enthusiastic as the genuine article. The play-by-play couldn't be better this year, with the addition of Suzi Kolber as the sideline reporter.

Sound (9/10)--Listening to NFL 2K5 is almost as appealing as looking at it, which is essential in creating a great sports game. The hits are clearly heard, the crowd makes itself present at all times, and the players can be heard talking trash at each other. If you played this game with your eyes closed (not recommended, BTW), you would think you were listening to an actual NFL game.

Extras (9/10)--I could have done without some aspects of the Celebrity challenges in The Crib, but it is a welcome addition overall. ESPN's 25th anniversary is commemorated very well by listing the 25 most memorable NFL moments (the Ice Bowl, the Music City Miracle, etc.) as well as some of the less memorable moments (the Houston Oilers monumental collapse in the '94 playoffs, for example).

Gameplay (10/10)--I saved this aspect for last because it is the main reason to get this game. Controls are very smooth and allows new players to get comfortable right away (reading the advanced controls segment in the manual helps further). Play selection is quite user-friendly, although it would be wise to know what you want to do ahead of time and keep your eye on the play clock. You are given the opportunity to design audibles to your liking for every formation, which allows for optimum flexibility.

Overall (9/10)--NFL 2K5 has stepped up its game in a big way and is poised to get a big jump on Madden because of its early release and $20 price tag. If you're looking for a football fix and can't wait until August, this game is a worthwhile buy.
