Yu Yu Hakusho: Dark Tournament
Review by Scyclone
"Travisty to a great Anime/Manga, Utterly Rediculous"
This game is pathetically depressing. I was planning on buying it for some time and had went to Blockbuster to rent Van Hellsing. Much to my surprise, I found YYH Dark Tournament in the shelves and decided to rent that as well.
I got home and began to play it, the initial beginning effects were pretty amazing, wow, its Yusuke and his spirit gun and shotgun, awesome! Well, this quickly turned to depressing.
Not only in easy mode is it rediculously hard, I found how the lack of the overall feel for the game becomes. So let me begin first off with the whole slew of really bad designs.
Graphics - These are pretty decent, not as good as its beforehand creation of Budokai 2, but not too shabby. I love how they did the effects as far as destroying the stadium in the middle of the fight. They really added more impact by putting in clips from the actual Anime. They didn't exactly have the best choice for clips and I was utterly pissed off by the ending. THAT IS NOT HOW IT ENDED! Yusuke was sad when Toguro died, because even though he won, he knew Kuwabara was dead as well. (THEY DIDN'T EVEN PUT KUWABARA'S "DEATH" IN THIS GAME?!?!?!)
Storyline - The greatest travisty to god known on earth. They ONLY kept the same battles, but the battles went entirely different and it had none of the awesome feelings you got watching Hiei absorb the dragon, and it didn't have all the interesting and cool events. You fought Genkai and tried to block little spirit guns for the resemblence of absorbing the spirit orb. What the hell is this.... Kuwabara didn't get hurt, Kuwabara didn't get his better spirit sword due to the hilt he recieved for the final rounds, Hiei never got to use his sword as a catalyst to the dragon of the darkness flame. Kurama was never in any "danger" as a result of the blood paint. Kurama never got to inplant the seed into himself to use it to save himself vs Touya. Lets put it this way, if I could give a - score for storyline, this would be it. At least Budokai 2's storyboard thing showed some rediculous accuracy in its events.
Sound/Music - The only good thing of this game, the music was good, the sound and the noises during the battles were good. Nuff said.
Gameplay - ..... don't get me started. Its your standard fighter sure enough, but.... now you use spirit energy to combo, in short, combo once you'll be unable to do so for about 30 seconds. All the spirit attacks and abilities take rediculously huge amounts of energy and likewise, it takes freaking forever. The computer regains theirs in a matter of 10 seconds tops, you on the other hand pray as your 2 hit combos are no match to their 10-12 combos. (EVEN ON EASY YOU CANNOT DO A DAMN THING IN HALF THE FIGHTS.) The game is designed against button mashing (which is a plus), but it is made so rediculously difficult, that it loses fun and challenge and becomes an impossibility without the use of cheating. There was some abilities which should have been in that were left out. And some abilities that made no sense, as I've never seen them used before in any of the series.
Dodging is non-existant, jumping is quite difficult to nail when you need it the most, you're only savior is blocking, which ironically the computers use like a religion. Block block block block block block. Then punch faster than you, even though your fist is 1 centimeter from their face. All in all, if you want a decent fighting game, play budokai instead of this, if you want a good anti-button masher game, play Soul Calibur 2.
Replay Value - After the 2 hour game that is the actual game. (Yes, its 2 hours for your hard earned 50 bucks.) All you can do after is play the repetitive unoriginal bullcrap over and over, fight with friends or play a stupid token card game which if you want to play sidegames, get FF8, FF9 or Xenasaga, all have very fun and (ACTUALLY) rewarding gains from doing so.
All in all, Funimation you have pissed me off, and Atari.... if you do this quality of work on Dungeons and Dragons Online, I will find some legitimate way to file a lawsuit on you for it... This is a travisty to the anime, manga, and the fans.
I am utterly insulted by this joke of a game.
You can do sooo much better than this crap...
And I know that because, I can do better than this crap.
Next time, if you are going to make a YYH game, you did this for Budokai one, why not do it for this.
DO MORE THAN JUST FIGHTING IF THE SITUATION REQUIRES IT.
I would have really enjoyed training and the spirit orb situation alot better granted you could struggle to maintain your endurance and run through the cave or struggle around trying to press buttons to time it properly so the energy doesn't consume you.
Well enough of my ranting, this is a very honest review. Don't believe me, rent it yourselves, you will be just as ticked off as me, if you consider yourself an avid gamer.
I hope this helps you guys save some money.
