Destroy All Humans!
Review by Spike Wullong
"One Giant step On Mankind!"
What can I say about this game? I had a lot of trouble figuring out if the game was a total waste of time, or a classic masterpiece. Towards the end of things, I ended somewhere in the middle. The main character in the game, Cryptosporidium 137, or Crypto for short has been set out to collect DNA strands from the humans. From the creators of Mercenaries comes a not quite as refined, but equally great game centered on massive and total destruction.
Gameplay - 9/10
This is the best part of the game by far. The game includes an arsenal of different weapons, ranging from humorous to just plain cool. Whether it's your "Anal Probe Gun" or you're UFO's Death Ray, you can always find a way to enjoy the massive destruction. Often times I found myself just destroying buildings for hours on end. The game has great expansive environments, but I found that most of the time I was limited to following some lame linear mission, when I really just wanted to be exploring the deeper parts of the map. Regardless, the gameplay is spectacular.
Controls - 6/10
What was Pandemic thinking? You have a terrible targeting system combined with confusing face button maneuvers. Often times I found it terribly hard to lock onto smaller targets. Fortunately, it gets easier over time, and it's not hard to dismiss the less than average controls.
Sound - 8/10
Not much to say here. The sound is great, mostly just the weird alien sounds. It really makes the game feel like it's in an old 1950s alien movie. Nothing is very memorable, however.
Voiceovers - 9/10
I figured this needed its own section. One of the main characters seems to be voiced by the same guy who did Invader Zim and Angry Beavers, but I could be very wrong. Nonetheless, it's the same style. I really enjoyed the voiceovers, but I do admit sometimes it got quite annoying, or even gave me a headache.
Humor - 10/10
Once again, this deserves its own section. The humor in this game is great. The game is worth paying for because of the jokes alone. I really enjoyed Cryptos' silly comments, and the silly weapons only made things better.
Graphics - 5/10 and 9/10
This is odd. I found the graphics in the game itself lackluster, but the cinematics are nothing short of beautiful. This splits my scores in two.
At the time I'm writing this, I would say buy this game, but that's simply because of a lack of good game releases this summer. Future readers might want to rent this instead, however, due to some major faults in the game.
