Resistance: Fall of Man
Review by luburulz
"Good, not great."
The Playstation 3 is the cause of a lot of controversy, which is well known so I'll spare you from going through that. At either rate, the one title everyone looked forward to for the system was Resistance: Fall of Man. This game was going to show a lot of what the PS3 could do, and best of all, it is a launch title, how sweet is that? Well, the game got overhyped because of this and a lot of people came away disappointed (well, those that actually got their hands on the system and got to play it, that is).
Gameplay: 9/10
The gameplay is a lot like any other first person shooter out there. The controller is basically a supped up version of the PS2 controller, so those who get this as their first title on the PS3 won't have a learning curve with trying to figure out buttons on their new machine. While playing single player, it seems a bit slow and not as action packed as most expected. Also, it gets a bit frustrating at first because it's quite easy to die during the first part of the game, but once you learn some stuff (I won't spoil that for you) it becomes a lot easier. The online part of the game is very good, the battles sometimes lag, however it's far and beyond more entertaining than single player and I'd have to say that's where this game shines. Single player is good for those who want to be able to beat it, but at the same time it is a bit boring and gives you that "Been there, done that" sort of feeling. However, once you go online, you can easily tell that this isn't that bad of a game and have a lot of fun.
Graphics: 7/10
Now the graphics are not bad. They're not great either, though. I won't say everyone, but the vast majority expected a lot better looking game than this. If this were on any other system, it probably would blow people's minds, but since this is the PS3 and everyone has heard about how powerful of a machine this thing is, you'd expect a bit more than Gamecube type graphics. Now, I know what you're saying: "But luburulz, this is a launch title, no one knows how to use the PS3's power and you're just a 360/Wii/anti-Sony fanboy!" First of all, yes, this is a launch title, and yes, no developer out there knows how to quite make this machine tick yet. If Resistance had come out a year from now, it'd probably look 100 times better than it does now. So there is my point, maybe this game was rushed to make the launch because without it there would be no title out there for this system that would be worthwhile for the majority of the gaming population.
Now, Resistance is a very good game. I can honestly say I've enjoyed it quite a lot and the online is one of the best I've played in a long time. I just can't help but think that maybe this game was a bit rushed to make the launch so that there would be one game that gamers would point at and say "This is the AAA title for the PS3 launch." If you can put your bias away and not hate the system, you'll enjoy Resistance, I guarantee it. However, if you've played a ton of FPS games and expected this one to revolutionize the gaming world, well, you'll walk away disappointed.
