The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Review by nm14
"Oblivion is excellent, but could have been even better."
Oblivion, the fourth installment of the Elder Scrolls, following Morrowind, is a highly addictive, RPG where you are able to roam a huge world. There are the traditional quests, which include the Mage, Fighter, and Thieves Guilds. The nice thing about this game is that you will have so many options, you are guaranteed never to get bored (until you can't stand looking at your television anymore). For example, if you are having trouble on the main quest of the game, you can take a break and train in the Imperial Arena, which is a Gladiator-like facility. Or, if you are in need of spells and want to boost your magic and Intelligence capabilities, you can head over the Mage's Guild and complete quests.
Another pro of Oblivion is its graphics. If you are playing this game on the PS3 at 720P HD, you will be impressed with your surroundings. The detail that has gone into the character facial expressions, or the natural environments, or the reflections of the sun on your shiny armour, is simply unbelievable. I would have to say that this game may run some of the best graphics available to any gamer on any system. Also, the PS3 apparently has faster load times, however, I have no confirmed this, as I do not have the game for Xbox 360.
But don't get too excited. Sure, the game has many positive aspects, but it also has some shortcomings. For example, the leveling up system could have used some work. In essence, to level up, you must boost your major skills. And in order to boost your major skills, you must perform spells or attacks that characterize those skills. If you can imagine, it gets redundant. People go as far as simply repeating spells over and over again, simply to get the level up. I think Oblivion could have used a more "interesting" approach to leveling up. However, there are tons of attributes that will surely keep you intimate with the game.
The controls of the game are pleasant. Whether you prefer third person or first person, it is pretty easy to navigate. Also, I was impressed with the horse controls. It would seem hard to control a horse, but Oblivion really makes it as easy as possible. Also, the PS3 version offers Hot Keys, which enable you to quickly switch spells at any given time.
Overally, this game offers a lot. There are many hours that can be put into this game. However, if you do not have much patience, it can get slightly boring and repetitive. I think anyone who enjoyed Morrowind will surely enjoy this game, especially on the new generation systems. If you are not willing to put a lot of time into the game, it might not be the best choice for you. Oh, and if you have a PS3, this game is definitely the best out there. So, if you are waiting for something to come out, play this one in the meantime.
