Calling All Cars!
Review by Ding6
"Calling the Mayhem!!"
To start, I'm just going to say that this is the best PSN game to this very date, for players who enjoy this type of game.
This game has a participation of the "God of War" director and someone from "Twisted Metal: Black", and if you played "Twisted Metal" and liked it, you'll probably like this one too.
Story/Objective - 9/10
In "Calling All Cars!" you are a cop, and your objective is to pick up the prisoner and take it back to jail. There are 3 forms to take it back to jail: 1st - Bring it back to the Jail Building and enter in one of the 3 entrances; 2nd - See if there is a Paddy Wagon and try to deliver it on his back; 3rd - See if there is a chopper and try to be underneath it like 2 seconds. The objectives are like that, and the fun part... It's crazy with four people.
Content/Unlocks - 8/10
Concerning that this is a PSN game that costs (PAL) 8€, it has a pretty decent content, and a good portion of unlockable cars (funny cars).
You can play in Single Race and Tournament offline with up to four people, and Single Race Online with up to two local players, thats cool, and four people in total. To unlock a car, you go to offline and see what you need to do, usually is like, go to this stage at this difficulty with this settings. There is 10 cars to unlock. In total there are 4 tracks, city, train yard, alpine and burgs. City - is in a city; Train Yard - There are 4 tracks of trains, and trains always coming; Alpine - it's on a snow mountain; Burgs - This is a special one, it's on burg that it's on Halloween, but there is no jail here, only Paddy Wagons coming and choppers, it's pretty much like an Arena. I'm not sure, but I've read, don't know where, that there might be a map pack later this year... we'll see.
Graphics - 9/10
The graphics are cartoonish, but well done. The cars are well designed, the environment is destructible, and the game as decent textures... but I thought, "Could this game been done on a PS2?", I think my answer is "no", it really can't, or at least, it would eventually lose quality. This is a fast paced game, and it can't have slowdowns, the graphics are top shape, and no slowdowns, so this game deserves a 9 out of 10 for the graphics.
Gameplay - 10/10
Your car accelerates by driving in the left analog, if you want it to be a little faster, you have the turbo on X button, if you want really faster, you spend your nitro meter by pressing the R2 or L2 button. R1 is to use a weapon you caught (Hammer; Missile; Magnet). L1 is to jump, really handy when a missile is coming to you, or someone uses a hammer to shake the ground.
You know the objective, take the prisioner to jail, but this task is hard when you have more 3 players coming toward you, if they slam you, you lose the prisioner, if you slam to them, you might get the prisioner. The controls are responsive and accessible to everyone.
Overall - 9/10
If you don't know what game to buy on the PSN, this is a must buy if you like this type of game. It's like a capture the flag, but much more funny than many things out there. I didn't gave it a 10 because there is no score board online... Mortal Kombat II has a scoreboard, a meaningless scoreboard, and this game don't? anyway... This is fun to play online with 2 local players, it's just crazy, and it supports mic.
So, buy it, and start to laugh a lot.
