Resistance: Fall of Man
Review by CrimsonSeven
"A strong start for a new franchise and the PS3."
Well, things are going pretty badly. No stores are open. You're out of milk. All the banks are closed. You also have no money with you with which to buy milk.
Also, did I mention there's a race of murderous, grotesque, mutant-type creatures who are attempting to take over the world at your doorstep?
I guess things just got a whole lot worse, pal.
I got Resistance this Christmas with my shiny new PS3. It was certainly a decision I won't be regretting anytime soon.
The sound in this game is top-notch, the voice acting especially. The game is narrated in a documentary-ish style by a British Intelligence officer, Rachel Parker. Her dialogue both helps to set the mood of the coming mission and to give you a little sense of realism in the game. The allies all sound very convincing, usually asking (well, screaming) for your help. The Chimera all sound positively surreal, it can be very scary to hear a low-pitched growl when you can't see any Chimera. All weapons sound as they should.
The visuals are absolutely beautiful. Textures are refined, and everything has a polished shine to it. Also, the cutscenes are very good looking; sometimes they'll include some charts or maps or pictures that look like they could have easily come from the 1950s.
The gameplay is the best aspect of this game. It is fairly formulaic, but that in no way helps to detract from the overall "fun factor" of the game. The storyline basically consists of the liberation of England from the Chimera. Along the way, you'll encounter a whole army's worth of Chimera, including different types of the beasts (Leapers, Rollers, Steelheads, Hybrids, Titans, Angels, Widowmakers, etc.). Of course, these creatures are armed, and using the Chimeran guns can be a huge fun-rush (who doesn't like owning someone through a wall, anyways?). Simply put, the gameplay may not be innovative (although the alternate fire modes of the guns and rage mode of the Chimera in multiplayer do open up a lot of doors), but that doesn't mean it can't be fun.
The online mode is fantastic; there's a ton of maps and game modes, and the community is healthy and active. There is also clan and voice support. As if this weren't enough, the servers have NO LAG, even with 40 players.
If you have a PS3 but not Resistance: Fall of Man, I would like to know just what your general problem is. Wacko.
