I. - INTRODUCTION -
*******************************************************************************
Star Ocean - The Second Story has a content rating of E (Everyone) for animated
violence and mild language given by the ESRB. It runs on the Sony PSOne console
and supports Dual Shock, Memory Card and Analog Controller.
All of the characters have an "Emotional Level" with respect to the other cha-
racters. For example, seeing a particularly close friend fall in combat may
cause an intense rage that results in "stronger-than-usual" attacks.
If some characters achieve an especially close relationship, then the conclu-
ding episode, where the characters reminisce about their adventures, will
change. The Private Actions contain many events related to this Emotional
Level, so they may change the ending as well.
A major challenge to every player of this game is to get all of the endings. It
is a challenge because there are over 80 possible endings in Star Ocean - The
Second Story!
And the story is split into two books, one is Claude's Destiny and the other is
Rena's Adventure. Although there are similarities between the two storylines,
the ending is quite different and the game is viewed in two different point of
views.
In an endless sea of stars at the edge of the universe, a single fateful en-
counter is about to take place. For the gods have set forth on a quest to des-
troy the universe. And a deadly meteorite, which they hurled into the vastness
of space, has collided with an unsuspecting planet, Expel, putting the wheels
of fate into motion. Now, two people are about to cross paths, and their
meeting will force them to endure both the gods and their devilish advisors.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Claude's Destiny
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
After attaining the rank of Ensign in the Earth Federation, Claude C. Kenni is
given his first assignment. When a mysterious energy field is found on the pla-
net of Milocinia, a survey party is dispatched to investigate. As an escort,
Claude boards the starship of his father, Ronixis J. Kenni, and heads toward
Milocinia. Upon landing on Milocinia, Claude and the rest of the party discover
a gigantic dome-shaped building on the desolate land. The interior of the dome
appears to have been devastated by enormous explosions. All that remains inside
are pieces of broken equipment and, in the center of the room, a mysterious
looking machine. While Ronixis and the rest of the survey team cautiously
attempt to examine the object from a distance, Claude becomes impatient. "Just
quaking in our boots is getting us nowhere," he thinks. Brashly ignoring his
father's warnings, he approached the object. Suddenly, and without warning, a
powerful force takes hold of Claude. A blinding flash fills the room, and when
it subsides, Claude is nowhere to be found.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Rena's Adventure
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
The Planet Expel is a lush green world with abundant natural beauty. However,
three months ago, after a meteorite crashed to the surface, monsters began to
appear and word of strange happenings spread across the land. The people began
to regard the meteorite as an omen of disaster and dubbed it "The Sorcery
Globe."
At this time, a young girl from the village Arlia, named Rena, decides to visit
the Shingo Forest, which is some distance from her home. Although her mother
tries to stop her, warning of the appearance of monsters and other strange
happenings since the arrival of the Sorcery Globe. Rena insists on going into
the forest alone.

III. - BATTLE SYSTEM -
*******************************************************************************
If you encounter an enemy, you will enter combat. There are various systems re-
lated to the unique Battle System in Star Ocean - The Second Story, which allow
you to perform specialty attacks, spells, and direct the combat tactics of the
members of your party.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Three Battle Modes
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
< STANDARD >
This mode is for players who prefer traditional turn-based combat or for begin-
ning RPG players.
< SEMI-ACTIVE >
This mode is for intermediate players and for those who want a certain amount
of freedom in movement. It is recommended that you get used to combat when
playing in this mode.
< FULL ACTIVE >
This mode is for experienced players who want an even higher degree of freedom
in movement. Selecting this mode allows you to move freely over the battle-
field. One character could move away from the others and act as a decoy or try
to guard a member of your party who is casting a spell. This gives you more
variety in your combat attacks.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Normal Attacks vs. Killer Moves
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The basic moves in combat are "normal attacks." Although these may be somewhat
low in power, there is no limit on how many times they can be used. While
"Killer Moves" can no longer be used when you run out of MP, they are quite
powerful.
Pressing the [X] button once displays a cursor on the enemy. Use the left and
right directional buttons to move this mark to the enemy you wish to attack.
Then press the X button again to attack the targeted enemy.
Press the L1 or R1 button to attack an enemy with Killer Moves. Killer Moves
cannot be used unless you have sufficient MP. In addition, you cannot use them
unless you have set them up on the Camp screen.
A "Link Combo" is a way to combine powerful Killer Moves in quick succession to
really pummel an enemy. The exact combination of Killer Moves is left up to the
player, so you can create your own individual combo moves. However, in order to
do this you must first obtain the "Link Combo" item.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Spells or Magic
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
< ATTACK SPELLS >
These spells directly inflict damage on the enemy. There are two types of
spells, those that inflict damage on an individual enemy, and those that cause
damage to all enemies. Spells cannot be used if you run out of MP.
< RECOVERY SPELLS >
These spells can cure status abnormalities or heal damage caused to members of
your party. There are also spells that can block enemy spells of halt enemy
movement.
=-=-=-=-=-=-
After Battle
=-=-=-=-=-=-
If you have defeated all enemies and are victorious in battle, you get expe-
rience points and money. The money given as prize is in Fol, the amount of each
depends on the type of enemy.
Once a character acquires a certain number of experience points, that character
will go up a level and increase his or her abilities. It is also possible to
learn new specialties and collect skill points.
Characters who are attacked by an enemy in battle and end up with a HP of zero
die, and can no longer participate in battle. If all of the characters die, get
turned to stone or are otherwise unable to fight, then the game is over. If
this happens, you must try again, starting from the last saved game.
=-=-=-=-=-
Strategies
=-=-=-=-=-
The Game AI in Star Ocean - The Second Story has different settings to move
efficiently in battle. Set strategies for every member of the active party for
their specific use during the course of a battle. Example, when you need a
certain member to keep away from enemy during a time period in the battle, set
his strategies to keep away from enemy. There are two ways to set strategies,
one is during battle and the other before/after a battle. For in-battle strate-
gies, select the member of your party that needs to change strategies, then
select strategy menu, then the required strategy. The other one is during the
access of the camp menu, select combat menu then strategies.
< Fighters >
Attack with all MP! - Killer moves used consecutively
Protect friends! - Attack enemies near friends
Conserve killer moves! - Killer moves used moderately
Spread out and attack! - Attack far away enemies
Stay away from enemy! - Run away when the enemy is coming near
Do nothing! - Just stand still
< Mages except Rena >
Attack till all MP are gone! - cast spells consecutively
Conserve MP! - Cast spells moderately
Attack fleeing enemy! - Cast spells on fleeing enemy
Use no Heraldic spells! - Don't cast spells and keep away from enemy
Throw own body into attack! - Go near the enemy and do nothing
Do nothing! - Just stand still
< Rena >
Recover friends only! - Cast healing magic on allies when required
Aid friends! - Cast healing and attack magic
Aid self only! - Cast healing magic only on self
Cast no spells! - Don't cast spells and keep away from enemy
Put self into attack! - Go near the enemy and do nothing
Do nothing! - Just stand still
=-=-=-=-=-
Formations
=-=-=-=-=-
There are thirteen formations available in the game. Formations are used to get
the edge in your battles, and effectively manage the positions of your members.
Example, if the enemies in a certain place is quite difficult, and you have a
tendency to back out if there is real trouble, then use the Escape Shift forma-
tion. This formation will increase your probability to excape during battle.

IV. - PRIVATE ACTIONS -
*******************************************************************************
In Star Ocean - The Second Story, special mini-events involving a wide range of
characters have been prepared in addition to the main adventures. These are
called "Private Actions." Although I prefer to call it Private Action Sequence
because you not only act but a sequence or chain of events will occur upon ini-
tiating a "Private Action" by pressing [Square] outside town.
Various Private Actions are prepared in each town. There are also one-time
events that you will not see again as the story proceeds. Keep an eye out for
these. The sequences are displayed in random so a definite and complete list of
private can be pain stakingly difficult to gather. Although some of the private
actions are required to be seen so that you will get a specific item, character
or weapon or whatever, I wrote them for convenience. Other private actions, I
may not have the time and the effort to collect them all. If you have a very
definite and complete list, then inform me. I'll certainly add them to my walk-
through.
Private Actions may also effect the development of the main adventure. Whether
or not a certain action takes place may result in changes to subsequent deve-
lopments. The more Private Actions you engage in, the more interesting and deep
the story will become.
Immediately before entering a town from the field, press the [Square] button
when the "Private Action" text appears in the upper right corner of the screen.
Where have your friends gone? Look for them and try talking to them. The Pri-
vate Actions also change depending on which hero you have selected and how the
story proceeds. So explore!

V. - CHARACTERS -
*******************************************************************************
There are twelve playable characters in Star Ocean - The Second Story, Claude
C. Kenni, Rena Lanford, Ernest Raviede, Celine Jules, Dias Flac, Bowman Jean,
Opera Vectra, Noel Chandler, Ashton Anchors, Chisato Madison, Precis F. Neumann
and Leon D. S. Geeste. This part contains a brief description and statistics of
the characters.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
--------------------------------------------------------------- Claude C. Kenni
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Claude is the son of Ronixis Kenni, Captain of the Calnus. Ronixis was a parti-
cipant of a previous STAR OCEAN game released in Japan. While on an Away Team
trip investigating a strange signal on the planet Milocinia, he gets caught in
a transporter beam and ends up on a distant planet called Expel. While trying
to get home safely, he gets caught up in the quest to save the planet.
Claude is a strong fighter who can equip the strongest weapons and equipment.
As one of the main characters in this game, he'll have to be in your party at
all times, so make good use of him on the front line of battle.

------------------------------------------------------------------ Rena Lanford
-=-=-=-=-=-=
Rena Lanford's adventure begins during one of her numerous escapades into the
Shingo Forest. Venturing deeper than previous visits, she is rescued from an
attacking beast by a stranger wielding a Sword of Light.
Believing him to be the legendary Warrior, whose appearance was foretold by the
prophets, she leads him back to her village. Rena is a strong magic user, with
tremendous gifts in the healing arts. Although she's less formidable in battle
than Claude, she still makes a good fighter in the earlier parts of the game.
As the game progresses and your party grows you may want to put her in the back
line and put her healing powers to good use. After all, she's the only healer
in the first half of the game, and keeping her safe will help keep the rest of
your battle party in good condition.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
---------------------------------------------------------------- Ernest Raviede
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Ernest is an archeologist from the planet Tetragenes. He has come to Expel to
research certain ruins and is the boyfriend of Opera Vectra, who is in hot pur-
suit of him. Once you find him, it is Opera who will encourage him to join your
party. Ernest uses a super-charged whip to attack the enemy, which gives him a
longer range than the sword-bearing characters. Additionally, his Killer Moves
are strong and a few can hit multiple times. However, as a fighter Ernest is
somewhat of a disappointment, especially after the lengths to which you have to
go to obtain him. Also, adding him to your party will require you to make a
choice between the final three characters.
Race: Tetragenes Level: 25

-=-=-=-=-=-=
------------------------------------------------------------------ Celine Jules
-=-=-=-=-=-=
Celine is the child of respected mages in the village of Mars. Her restlessness
and need for adventure lead her to explore the caves and dungeons of Expel in
search of danger and, more importantly, treasure. Her skill in offensive magic
will come in handy when she joins your party in its trek through Cross Cave. As
a practitioner of the Heraldic Arts, Celine suffers from the same pros and cons
as most magic users. Because she can only equip robes and other types of light
armor, her defensive strength remains constantly low and requires her to remain
in the back lines of battle. However she is the first character in the game who
can cast strong offensive spells that affect all enemies on the battlefield.
This feature makes her invaluable in the early stages of the game, when multi-
ple-target attacks are few and far between.
Race: Expel Level: 8
Type: Mage Hit Points: 400
Gender: Female Magic Points: 100
Age: 23 equiv. Strength: 15

=-=-=-=-=
--------------------------------------------------------------------- Dias Flac
=-=-=-=-=
Dias Flac is the mysterious friend of Rena, with a background equally as myste-
rious. In your journeys, you'll run into him several times. Each time you run
into him, you will discover how powerful a swordsman he is. Unfortunately, his
preference is to travel alone and fight for his own causes. On the battlefield,
Dias is a formidable force to be reckoned with. Next to Claude, he is the
strongest fighter, with devastating sword attacks. Off the field, however,
you'll find that Dias is of little use in Item Creation or the other special-
ties.
Race: Expel Level: 35
Type: Fighter Hit Points: 2500
Gender: Male Magic Points: 250
Age: 25 equiv. Strength: 175

=-=-=-=-=-=
------------------------------------------------------------------- Bowman Jean
=-=-=-=-=-=
The mild-mannered pharmacist, Bowman may not seem like a likely candidate for a
long, arduous quest like yours, but you'd be surprised. Beneath his calm exte-
rior is a warrior dying to get out! Bowman runs a small, but well-respected
pharmacy near the university in Linga. He also happens to be good friends with
Keith, the translator, so if you can get him to intervene on your behalf, you
might be able to get your translation project done faster. Bowman uses the same
Knuckles as Rena, but you'll find that he can equip a larger variety of them.
He's a skilled fighter on the front line, his Killer Moves mix medical tech-
nology with good old martial arts. Unfortunately, his talents tend to get over-
shadowed by the already established members of your party.

-=-=-=-=-=-=
Opera is the daughter of a wealthy family on the highly advanced planet Tetra-
genes. When you first meet her in a tavern in Hilton, you learn that she crash
landed on Expel while looking for her boyfriend, an archeologist named Ernest.
He is easily recognizable because of the 3rd eye in the middle of his forehead
a characteristic of the race of Tetragenes. If you saw the three-eyed man run-
ning from Cross Castle in a Private Action, then you can aid her in her search.
Opera is one of the first characters you'll recruit who can perform multiple-
hit attacks. Her Killer Moves are highly desirable for that fact alone! How-
ever, her usual weapon attacks require time and space to complete, putting her
at a disadvantage in hand-to-hand combat. However, if you can keep her well
supplied with Magic Points, you won't be disappointed in the results!

When your attempt to get an artificial Synard fails, you're sent to Noel's out-
post near the Cavern of the Red Crystal to try to tame the last wild Synard.
Noel, in his role of caretaker, joins you on this trek through the cavern. Noel
is the only other character besides Rena who can cast Healing Spells, which can
be very helpful when fighting against powerful monsters or bosses. In addition
to his spell casting abilities, he's a decent fighter with a higher Armor Class
rating than the other Mages.

Ashton is a sword-for-hire who has a knack for being in the wrong place at the
wrong time! When you encounter Ashton in Salva Drift, a horrible accident
befalls him, causing him to become fused with the two-headed dragon he's
fighting. He joins the party to search for a way to rectify the situation. In
battle, Ashton is a strong fighter who uses twin short swords to slash the
enemies to pieces.
Although not as strong as Claude and Dias, he's still one of the best fighters
in the game and a good candidate for recruitment. However, be careful to check
out his talents when you add him to your party, as he has only a few. If you're
not pleased with what you see (there are times when he'll end up with no ta-
lents), reload your saved game and try again.

Chisato is an investigative reporter for the Nede Daily Planet. When your group
appears on Nede she decides to follow you around and write about your exploits.
However, her stealth techniques leave much to be desired and you'll spy her
everywhere she lurks. This can be used to your advantage in the Cavern of the
Red Crystal, where a certain event makes her drop her business card.
Chisato is a great addition to any battle team. She's quick and agile and her
Killer Moves produce multiple hits against their targets. Although her Stun Gun
attacks aren't as spectacular as you might hope (she rarely uses them, prefer-
ring physical attacks), her Killer Moves more than make up for them.

youthful zeal, a desire to make some friends, and a more than slight crush on

her a perfect ally.
However, choosing her means that you have to forgo having Bowman in your party.

VIII. - SKILL SYSTEM -
*******************************************************************************
A "Skill" is a special ability that a character possesses. In this game charac-
ters try to acquire as many skills as possible to expand the things that they
are able to do.
Steps in acquiring a skill:
1. Obtain a skill at a skill guild.
2. On the "Camp" screen, open "Skills" and display the skill point appli-
cation screen.
3. Select the skill you wish to learn and allocate the skill points (SP)
to learn the skill. SP are acquired a few at a time each time the cha-
racter goes up a level. Once used, skill points cannot be recovered by
any other method, so be careful when you use them.
At each skill guild you will find three masters who will give you information.
Listen carefully!
The available categories of skills include "Knowledge," "Sensibility," "Combat"
and "Technique."
Combat 1: Spirit Force, Below the Belt, Strong Blow, Cancel
Combat 2: Flip, Gale, Feint, Mental Training

A Character that acquires certain combination of skills can learn a specialty.
Specialties include skills that can inflict large amounts of damage in combat
and others that range from the ability to identify unknown items to being able
to create useful items from raw materials.
Move the cursor to a specialty you have learned and press the X button to dis-
play the skills required for that specialty along with their skill levels.
While specialties are certainly strong, they may fail if their level is low.
Try raising the levels of the required skills of a certain specialty to raise
the level of that certain specialty. Skills can be acquired by buying a certain
skill package from a skill guild. Skill guilds offer different types of skill
packages. If you buy a skill package you cannot buy it again, and if there are
newly joined characters in your group he/she can learn the skills that you have
already bought before he/she has joined your party.
By increasing the level of a certain combination of skills or sometimes only
one skill, a compound skill can be made. Compound skills are skills that arises
once a certain combination of skills has been leveled-up.

playing.

If Rena is not the hero, Dias won't join the party.
If you pick too many pockets your friends will think less of you.
If you use Reverse Side too often your friends will think less of you.
It's a good idea to reproduce valuable items before you use them up.
Learn about the effects of different items. Some of them will surprise
you.
Learn about your armor. There is some that is very effective even though
its defense strength is rather low.
Learn about your enemy. Different types of monsters are best beaten with
different combat methods.
Learn about your weapons. There are some that are very effective even
though their attack power is rather low.

play. It's important to fight together too!
Save your skill points by reading a lot of books.
Strategy is very important. Be sure that each character has their own
strategy.
Thanks for playing the game.
The more you use your killer moves and magic the more spectacular they
become.
There are many parameters in this game that depend upon the feelings and
moods of the characters.
There are some items that break when you try to equip yourself with them.
Think about your jewelry too. Some combinations may be quite effective.
Try going back to a town you've already been to, you might run into
something different with Private Action play.
When the hero of the story changes, the story itself changes a little too
When you get used to using specialty commands you'll see how strong you
can become!
With Alchemy and Customize you can make the strongest weapons.
You can combine special weapons and materials to customize weapons, you
know.
