0. ABOUT THIS GUIDE
---------------------------------------------
This is v1.3 of the Ore no Ryouri FAQ and Technique Guide. As such, please
feel free to send any comments, criticism, etc. to Candace Seu at
(maruchan@removethis.sandwich.net). The Japanese translations (e.g. in
Chapter 1) were done by me and are not at all literal - I am not an expert,
and I have attempted to present information in a way it might have been
presented in an English-language equivalent of the game. If I have badly
misplaced the meaning of the original Japanese, please do let me know.

This document is encoded in US-ASCII. Another copy of this FAQ is encoded in
Shift-JIS, and contains the Japanese language equivalents of the dish and
event names, (for people who would like to compare the information in this FAQ
to what they see on the screen or for students of Japanese). Both versions
are available at gamefaqs.com.

1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
---------------------------------------------

1.1 Where To Buy
---------------------------------------------
Ore no Ryouri has only been released in Japan (NTSC format). I have heard
rumors that the first level appeared in America on a compilation demo disk (as
a demo called "I'm the Chef!"), but apparently its translation has since been
abandoned. Thus, you will need to have a modded PS/PS2 or the equivalent
Japanese machine to be able to play this title.

Ore no Ryouri was released twice: first as a regular title, then as a PSOne
Book (equivalent to America's "Greatest Hits" and Europe's "Special Value"
series). The original release is no longer being sold. The cheapest retail
price I've seen is at Amazon.co.jp at 1350 yen, but they will only ship to
addresses in Japan.

I was able to purchase the PSOne Book version from Himeya Soft
(http://www.himeya.com), although it should be noted that they really jack up
the price when converting from yen to dollars (from 1800 yen to $28). Sadly,
this store is the only place I've seen that will sell/ship the game outside of
Japan.

1.2 Game Story (as far as I can tell)
---------------------------------------------

You play the part of a young boy who is hailed as the most accomplished chef
in the Coo-Kingdom, and not undeservedly: year after year, you have been the
top winner in the kingdom's annual "Iron Chef"-like cooking contest. One day,
as you are relaxing at the beach, a jealous rival appears: a frog (Kaeru), who
has consistently been the runner-up in every one of those contests. He and
his Gero-gero Gang (a motley mix of bad guys, including a robot and a flower)
want to challenge you to a final cooking competition, to be held at 8
different restaurants in the capital city. As a competitive type yourself,
you accept and begin your journey across the city's restaurants, where you
will train with your fellow chef friends in order to defeat Kaeru and his gang!

In order to manage the restaurant you have been entrusted with, you must take
care to perform well and keep up with the demands of hungry customers. Create

delight - all the while dealing with roaches, customers who eat-and-run, and
the food critic who demands to be satisfied.

Japanese, and family (Hong Kong-style) restaurant
* 39 types of foods
* An extra helping of ways to play: Story, VS, 3-Minute Cooking and Extra
Modes available!

1.4 Gameplay and Controls
---------------------------------------------

These controls are for the regular cooking part of the game - I'm too lazy to
write about omake mode at the moment. Stay tuned for the next version of this
FAQ, maybe.

** DEFAULT CONTROLS

You need an analog (dual shock) controller. This game will not work at all
with any other types. Controls for Omake Mode games may be slightly different.

Circle - Select (an option or order); remove foods in "waiting" steps from
heat. (See section 1.4)
X - Cancel an option.
Control Pad - Move between options and orders. Cannot be used in simulation
sequences.
Joysticks - Move between options and orders (ltstick only). Use both to
simulate cooking motions.
Start - Pauses game; shows or hides Quit/Continue options.

Note that you cannot defer/cancel an order once you have selected it.

** SCREEN LAYOUT

-- Task List --
At the very left of your screen is a brown column that looks like a table.
Your tasks will appear on this table as colored tabs that contain the name of
the dish/task and a picture of the step you need to work on next. Different
colors denote different kinds of tasks:

  BLUE: Regular customer's orders.
  GREEN: Food critic's orders.
YELLOW: Maintenance tasks (see section 2.2)

As time progresses, the tabs will slowly slide of the screen to the left. You
need to complete the tasks before they disappear completely.

-- Cookware --
Below the task list is a group of four diamonds. Starting from the top and
going clockwise, they are: frying pan, large pot, oven, and fryer. You only
have one of each, and you can't cook two different things in the same cookware
(unless you combined several orders properly). When the cookware is in use,
the corresponding diamond is highlighted.

-- Status Bar --
On the right side of the screen (it will span both halves of the screen in
2-player mode) is the status bar, which marks your restaurant's overall
reputation. A circle (maru) is at the top and an x (batsu) is at the bottom.
Satisfy enough customers and you'll win when you rise to the maru; otherwise,
you'll lose when you fall to the batsu.

-- Cooking Area --
The central, largest part of the screen is where your food will appear when
you prepare it. The background text is correlated with your reputation as
listed on the status bar. You start out at "Ordinary" and can move upwards to
"Good" and then "Awesome!", or you can move downwards to "Bad" and then
"Awful".

If you get down to "Awful", the cooking area will start to get staticky,
which conveniently makes it even harder to cook.

** SELECTING A TASK

1. Press U or D on the Control Pad or ltstick to cycle through the list of
tasks.
2. Press O to select the task you want to do.
3. Complete the task. If it is a waitable task (see section 1.5), all you
need to do is press O after you've waited long enough.

** NOTES ON VS MODE

VS Mode allows you to play with one or two players. The benefit of playing
as one player in VS mode is that you can skip to the boss battle of the stage
you'd like (however, this requires that you have already unlocked the stage in
Story Mode. Select the second option.

VS Mode also allows you to practice certain tasks (e.g., beer pouring, thin
vegetable slicing) for up to 30 seconds at a time. You can also set try high
scores for these tasks. Select the first option.

** SCORING SYSTEM

Every time you complete a step of a dish, a number between 1-10 appears on the
screen. That is your score. 1 is the minimum and 10 is the maximum.

To have a certain effect on the customer's mood (shown by the face that
appears
above his/her head), all your steps have to be in a certain range:

    EASY LEVEL Normal Critic
    Content: 10-8 10-8
    Disaffected: 7-5
    Disgusted: 4-1 7-1

    NORMAL LEVEL Normal Critic
    Content: 10-8 10-8
    Disaffected: 7-5
    Disgusted: 4-1 7-1

    GOURMET LEVEL Critic
    Content: 10-9
    Disgusted: 8-1

However, your overall reputation seems to be affected by the net or average
score. Therefore, if you have a multi-step dish and you score a 2 on the
first step, it's still in your best interests to take care on the remaining
steps. The customer will still be angry, but the drop in reputation will be
less drastic. It is possible for your customer to look disaffected, but still
give you a slight gain in reputation.

** DIFFICULTY LEVELS

In story mode, you have three levels: Easy, Normal, and Gourmet.
  - You must complete the easy and normal levels to unlock all the stages.
The easy level does not include stages 3, 6, and 9.

  - Gourmet level is only available after you have played through the first
two levels. All of your customers will be food critics. You must get 9s or
10s on all steps of your dishes in order to please them. Since critics affect
your reputation greatly, you will win or lose very quickly.

  - In the easy level, during certain steps that require ingredient addition
(e.g. pouring ketchup on the hamburger of level 2), a square with an X will
appear onscreen and the controller will vibrate to let you know that you've
put in enough. In the normal level, this is no longer true.

  - In the easy level, you can recover points after cutting yourself in the
cutting steps by cutting very thin slices. In the higher levels, this is no
longer true (except for the first two stages).

  - Each successive level sets a faster pace (tabs disappear at a faster rate)
and the AI are smarter in the boss battles.

In 2-player VS mode, each person can choose between two levels: Easy and
Normal.

  - If you are on the normal level but are playing against someone on the easy
level, your mistakes will be much more crippling, and the rate at which tasks
disappear is faster.

1.5 Guide Format (Codes)
---------------------------------------------

DISH NAME is listed first in Japanese and English. Substeps are named and
explained in order of appearance.

CODES are in brackets next to the name, and refer to the following qualities:
  - C (Combinable): When different customers place the same order, you can
sometimes fulfill their requests all at once.
  - W (Waitable): Certain steps (boiling, frying, baking) do not require you
to do anything. When you select them, a red square with a hand will appear to
tell you "Hands off!" Press 'O' once to start cooking the dish, and when it's
done, press 'O' again to take it off. Waitable steps take ~8 seconds, during
which time you can work on other orders.

  - TIME codes refer to the amount of time needed to complete a non-waiting
dish or step. Your personal experience will vary.

     - L1 (Level 1): Can complete one of these in the time it takes to do a
waitable step.
     - L2 (Level 2): Can complete two of these...
     - L3 (Level 3): Can complete three or more of these. Less than 2 seconds
each.
     - NW (No Wait): Takes slightly longer than the time it takes to do a
waitable step. Do this step at a time when you don't have something waiting on
the stove.
     - E (Entire): Start this task as soon as you see it appear on the screen.
It will take awhile.

APPEARANCE refers to the picture that appears on the tab, for identification
in case you cannot read Japanese.

CONTROL explains how to move the sticks in order to cook.

TECHNIQUE, if present, will explain how to make the dish in the most optimal
manner.

-- When moving the joysticks, STICK DIRECTIONS/POSITIONS are abbreviated
[U, D, L, R, X] (Up, Down, Left, Right, Center).
-- "ROTATE" means to move the joystick in a circle.
-- Right and left joysticks are referred to as rtstick and ltstick.

-- Movement coordination is also important:
"SIMULTANEOUS" motion means that you need to move the rtstick and ltstick at
the SAME time.
"ALTERNATING" motion means that you move the sticks ONE at a time. (Move
the rtstick and let go. Then move the ltstick and let go. Repeat...)

---------------------------------------------
2. GENERAL TECHNIQUES
---------------------------------------------

2.1 General Tips
---------------------------------------------

** THE ZEN (or something related) and MECHANICS of COOKING
Remember that the sticks are not pressure-sensitive - it doesn't matter how
hard you push on them. Relax your arms and try to use the minimum amount of
force needed - exercising control will give you speed.

Certain finger movements, such as rotating the stick with your thumb, may be
hard to do quickly. If this is the case, try generating the motion with your
entire arm instead of just your finger. For example, when I WASH DISHES, I
use the heel of my palm to make contact with the stick and move my entire arm.

** WAITABLE STEPS: COLOR CHANGING TABS

When you first start a waitable step, the color of the tab will be dark blue.
As the cooking process completes, the tab will eventually turn back to its
normal blue color (in ~8 seconds). If you wait too long and let the dish burn,
the tab will slowly turn bright red. Paying attention to the color of the tab
will help you anticipate how much more time you have to attend to other
matters.

** COMBINABLE STEPS

Sometimes several customers will order the same thing. Often, you can do
certain steps (especially the waitable steps) for everyone at once. This has
several benefits:
  1. It saves time
  2. It can have instant, significant results on your reputation (as well as
your opponent's!). A sudden increase in reputation will result in a slight
decrease for your opponent. Also, you may automatically "attack" them, which
results in their having to complete a yellow task. On the other hand, a
sudden decrease in reputation will give your opponent a boost.
  3. It can be used to pull off...

** THE LAST MINUTE RESCUE

To combine steps, you can click on any one of the qualifying tabs. The game
will combine the steps automatically. Note that when you do so, all of the
tabs line up to the same horizontal position. Thus, when combining steps,
you should always choose the tab that is the newest (farthest to the right).

Say that you need to boil ramen for a customer who's been there for some time,
but you don't think you have to enough time to do so before he gets mad and
leaves. Quickly select a newer "boil ramen" tab, and you'll be able to pull
the older customer's tab back quite a bit, buying you some time.

** TAKE UP SPACE

At higher levels, you should attend to the more complicated dishes first. If
you're very busy, let the simpler orders sit there for awhile - this will
prevent more orders (especially the complicated ones) from coming in, and can
be pulled out easily when you need an emergency boost in reputation (i.e. when
you are just about to fail or win)

** FAILURE IMMINENT

Sometimes, when things get hectic, you have to let some customers go or give
them a mediocre dish. If this happens to you, keep the following tips in mind.

- It's probably better to serve a mediocre dish than not serve one at all.
If you're running out of time on an order and you can't do a last minute
rescue, go ahead and wait less on that waiting step or chop the carrot into
two pieces. You might get a 1 on that step, but hopefully it'll average out
enough that you won't die.

- Never fail to serve, or serve something bad to the food critic. The food
critic has enough power over your reputation that you can go from near-winning
all the way to failure if you screw up badly enough.

- If you become overwhelmed by a bunch of yellow tasks and you won't be able
to finish them all, sometimes it's best to just let them disappear. When
yellow tasks disappear, they'll drive away all your customers, but you can
instead try to minimize the number of customers that will need to leave. For
example, try to complete as many one-step dishes as possible so that some
customers will leave by themselves first.

If there's a large time gap between tasks (i.e. three that will disappear in
the next 10 seconds, and one task that you actually have time to do), finish
up the one that will disappear later. Yellow tasks unfortunately don't make
the other yellow tasks disappear, so you want to make sure that you don't
have another set of customers come in and be driven out 30 seconds later.

2.2 VS Strategy Guide
---------------------------------------------
In VS mode, the way you perform will impact your opponent:

- Serving a single customer will raise or lower ONLY your score.

- Serving multiple customers at once (a combo) or serving the food critic will
have the following effects:

1. Your opponent's score will be affected in the opposite direction. If your
reputation improves, your opponent's will drop. If your reputation falters,
your opponent's will rise.
2. You have a chance at performing an attack, which will replace one of your
opponent's customers with a yellow (problem) event.

If you are playing to win, the implications are obvious.

If you are playing with a beginner and are trying to keep them alive as long
as possible (so that they don't get turned off before they get really good and
fun to play with!), I would suggest starting off by trying to serve only
single customers. This also slows you down appreciably and stops you from
making attacks. If your opponent is about to lose, start getting low scores
on a few combos. Oftentimes this should be enough to jet them out of imminent
failure.

2.3 Yellow (Problem) Events
---------------------------------------------

** DRUNK PATRON [L2]
Appearance: Sake (rice wine) bottle and cup

Control: Dial 110 to call the police. Ltstick moves your finger across the
numbers. D on the rtstick dials that number.

   Technique:
This task is particularly bothersome on Normal and Gourmet levels because
all your customers will want to leave sooner (tabs disappear faster). Thus,
you need to do this event as soon as it appears.

To get there quickly, push the ltstick straight R to get to the 1. Then
push straight D to get to the 0 - since there is no number at that position,
your cursor will most likely jump to the closest number, 0. If you
overshoot and dial 119 instead, you call the fire station, which will,
strangely enough, achieve the same purpose. I have not tested any other
   numbers.

** WASH DISHES [L2]
Appearance: Dish soap and sponge

Control: Rotate rtstick (clockwise or counterclockwise, doesn't matter).

** EAT-AND-RUN CUSTOMER [NW]
Appearance: Running man (with speed lines)

Control: Move both sticks U and D simultaneously, in a transverse motion
(Rtstick is U when ltstick is D; move rtstick D and ltstick U; repeat...).

Technique: Try to start moving the joysticks as soon as you start, there's
a small chance that you might catch him right away.

** ROACHES [NW]
Appearance: A roach.

Control: Move the slipper around the screen in all directions using the
ltstick. Push D on the rtstick to slap.

Technique: I suck at this, so I can't give you any tips. If you take too
long, the remaining roaches will run off the mat and scare all your
   customers anyway.

** COUNT MONEY [L2]
Appearance: Paper money

Control: Move the rtstick from L to R, R to L, etc., repeatedly.

Technique: Make sure that you push it all the way to the L and R, or you
won't be able to pick up/let go of the money. I find that I can do this
more quickly when I move my entire hand back and forth, instead of just
bending the finger touching the stick. Don't push the stick with excessive
force; exercising control will give you speed.

2.4 How to Chop
---------------------------------------------
Chopping (with a knife) is one of the most important skills in this game.
You'll use it in every stage, so it's important to master it early on. This
step always looks like a knife.

Control: Ltstick moves your hand horizontally (L or R). Pressing D on the
rtstick causes you to chop with your knife at the point right before your hand.
If you don't move your hand back before you make another slice, you will cut
yourself.

Technique: To get the maximum score, make at least 9 cuts. To do so, only
apply gentle pressure to the ltstick - at most, you want to pull the stick
1/2 cm to the left. This will move your hand at a nice slow pace. Then, just
push the rtstick D repeatedly and as fast as possible in order to cut the
maximum number of pieces.

Points: Cutting yourself, depending on the stage and level of difficulty, may
result in the loss of points. The following table shows point loss data:

  Legend:
O - Does not matter, you will still get a 10
R - You will lose points if you cut yourself, but you can recover those
points by cutting very thin slices.
X - You will lose 1 point each time you cut yourself, and you cannot recover
      lost points.

                   Easy Normal
1. Ramen O O
2. Fast R R
3. Ethnic R X
4. Japanese R X
5. Family R X
6. Food Stand R X
7. Hotel R X
8. Castle R X
9. Magic R X

---------------------------------------------
3. STAGE GUIDES
---------------------------------------------

3.1. Stage 1: RAMEN SHOP
---------------------------------------------
Dishes: Beer, Ramen
---------------------------------------------

** BEER [L3]
Appearance: Mug of light brown beer

STEP 1: Pour Beer [L3]
Appearance: Mug under tap

Control: Push Ltstick L to tilt the glass to various degrees. Push D on
rtstick to fill with beer, let return to X when done.

Technique: Start out with the glass tilted all the way the left. Start the
flow of beer, and slowly let the glass return to vertical (ltstick returns
to X). For maximum points, the cup should be full (but not overflowing)
and have a ~1-in head. Do not spill any beer.

** RAMEN
Appearance: White soup bowl with chunks floating in it

STEP 1: Slice Ingredients [L2-3]
Appearance: Knife

   See section 2.3.

STEP 2: Boil Noodles [C, W]
Appearance: Large pot

Control: Start cooking, then discontinue heating with the O button. Soup
is done when steam rises from the pot.

STEP 3: Pour Broth [C, L2]
Appearance: Ladle (looks like a white feather)

Control: Push D on rtstick to pour broth.

Technique: Fill the bowl up to its lip for maximum points.

3.2. Stage 2: FOOD FAST
---------------------------------------------
Dishes: Soft Drink, Hamburger, Fries
---------------------------------------------

** SOFT DRINK [L3]
Appearance: Lime green drink

STEP 1: Pour Drink [L3]
Appearance: Lime green drink under tap

Control: Push D on rtstick to pour soda. Stop pushing once you've poured
   enough.

Technique: Do not let the glass overflow, or you'll get a 1 and be unable
to move while you watch the drink pour down the sides of the glass. Fill
the glass completely (about 1 in from the top) to get a 10.

** HAMBURGER
Appearance: Burger

STEP 1: Mince Ingredients [L2-3]
Appearance: Knife

   See section 2.3.

STEP 2: Pound Burger [C, L1-2]
Appearance: Hand with patty

Control: Simultaneously move both sticks L, then R; back and forth six
times. If you drop the burger (by holding it in one hand too long, or by
failing to coordinate the back-and-forth hand motion), you'll get a 1. If
you toss it successfully, you're guaranteed a 10.

STEP 3: Fry Burger [C, W]
Appearance: Frying Pan

Control: Start frying, then discontinue heating with the O button. Burger
is done when steam rises from it.

STEP 4: Add Ketchup [C, L1-2]
Appearance: Ketchup bottle

Control: Push D on rtstick to pour ketchup. Stop pushing once you've
added enough.

Technique: More orders (remember, this is combinable) require more ketchup.
Pour ketchup just until the patty turns red, or practice first on the easy
level. For a single burger, push the rtstick for ~1 second.

** FRIES [C]
Appearance: Fries in red box.

STEP 1: Deep Fry [C, W]
Appearance: Fries in deep fryer

Control: Start frying, then discontinue heating with the O button.
Fries are done when steam rises from it.

STEP 2: Apply Salt [C, L1]
Appearance: Salt shaker

Control: Push D on rtstick to pour salt. Stop pushing once you've added
   enough.

Technique: More orders require more salt. Play this on easy mode so that
the red X gives you a feel for how much salt is needed. For a single order,
push the rtstick for 1/2 second.

3.3. Stage 3: ETHNIC RESTAURANT
---------------------------------------------
Dishes: Dark Beer, Yakisoba, Shrimp Chili, Natto
---------------------------------------------

** DARK BEER [L3]

(ltstick counterclockwise and rtstick clockwise) so that both spatulas
scrape the yakisoba off the grill at the same time. The yakisoba should
get darker. Cooking will stop automatically when it is finished.

Technique: The yakisoba cooks more quickly if you can scrape both sides at
exactly the same time, though it still works if you don't. Don't let the
yakisoba stay in contact with the grill for too long (>2 seconds), or it
   will burn.

order, push the rtstick for 1/2 second.

thin. Make each rotation last a little less than a second. Don't let the
cone become lopsided (i.e. don't vary the speed of each rotation) or it'll
fall over and you'll get a one. To get a 10, make the ice cream cone as
high as possible by holding the ltstick D during the entire sequence (no
need to let go until your score pops up).

   times to create swirls.

Technique: Make the parfait as large as possible by holding the ltstick
down the entire time. Don't rotate the ltstick too quickly - since you
only get to go around five times, you want to make the swirls pretty wide.

times. If you drop the burger (by holding it in one hand too long, or by
failing to coordinate the back-and forth hand motion), you'll get a 1. If
you toss it successfully, you're guaranteed a 10.

STEP 3: Fry Burger [C, L1-2]
Appearance: Patty in frying pan

Control: Push rtstick D, then very quickly push it U to flip the burger.

Technique : If you wait for the patty to come back down to rest, you need
to flip the burger 3 times. However, if you just move to stick U and D
really quickly, you'll still cook the burger in the same amount of time and
get a guaranteed 10. As a bonus, it looks really funny. Just make sure
you push the stick all the way U and all the way D.

   to try: 1 try = 10; 2 = 9; 3 = 8; etc. If you drop the egg, you get a 1.
I suggest pushing the rtstick to 7 o'clock with the tip of your thumb, then

spots on the baking sheet. Push down on the rtstick to remove a takoyaki
   ball from heat.

Technique: Try to remove the balls as soon as they start shaking. This
step takes a really long time, so I don't like to combine this step often.
If you want to combine, make sure that you don't have any customers who are
about to leave. Also, try to start this dish as soon as it appears.

** COTTON CANDY [C, L2]

STEP 1: Make Cotton Candy [L2]
Appearance: Pink cotton candy.

Control: Rotate rtstick to move cone around cotton candy machine.

To avoid injury but pound quickly, position your hands so that you are
applying pressure to the sticks with the outside edges of your thumbs.
This will force you to move your entire thumb instead of just the first
joint, which will help you move faster. It will also allow the sticks to
