TENCHU SHINOBI-GAISEN

V1.2

By jimbojan. V1.1 Updated with new A/R & G/Shark codes 8/9/2000
V1.2 Updated with Dex-Drive Created Levels info. 10/9/2000
[with a little extra word in the appendix]

Hi.

Update: Discovered codes for infinite lives for each character on individual levels.

I've put the codes at the end of the faq. I found the Inf.Health on level codes myself
using a Pro Action Replay V3.2 and I've been assured by <Wetboss> [Rob] who has been
also
been working on them and has probably found them himself, they also work in a Gameshark.
Hurry up with that debug code Rob!

The [D000E226 800B] enabling code I didn't hack, that honour belongs to a guy at GB's
Paradise called <redel@gbparadise.de> I've found they also work in an X-Plorer cart. so
they should work in an X-Ploder.

Update V1.2 10/9/00

Rob <Wetboss> has very graciously given me permission to give his address on this faq.
It is Wetboss72@aol.com and he has created some great levels for Shinobi-Gaisen. I can
assure you of this because I down-loaded them from GameFaqs under Tenchu Shinobi-Gaisen
Saves. We don't have Dex-Drives in UK, but I somehow managed to convert the GME files
through my X-Plorer cartridge using a free software program from Blaze - Fire
International the makers of X-Plorer/X-Ploder carts. The program is called X-Link
and I've had it ages on my PC thinking it was only for code-hacking. I didn't know the
X-Plorer had so much potential - I do now.

I won't go into Rob's levels, that would give the game away. Just take it from me, they
leave mine standing ! [Moan..] You could have chucked in a couple of maps Rob! [Groan..]
Only kiddin' mate...

Taken from a private Wordpad document I made a few months ago, for my brother
[It had pretty pictures in it which I can't do here] and I've also had to
er..um..moderate
the language..

I've had Tenchu: Stealth Assassins [UK. Pal. Version] since it was released in 1998
and was so engrossed by it, I searched all the import game suppliers and found a copy
[one of only 11 being available in the UK commercially] of Tenchu Shinobi-Gaisen which
is a wonderful Japanese version of T:SA with a Level Editor and Time Attack mode and
it only cost me £20 [about $30]. As I write this we in Europe haven't got Tenchu: Birth
of the Assassins yet, so if T.S.G. is anything to go by, we're in for a treat
.
When I first got Shinobi-Gaisen I was completely stumped by the Japanese menus,
until I read "rocky_bottom's" excellent faq. here on GameFaqs. He got me through
the game painlessly. This is just an extention of his great work and hopefully does
not seem like a copy. It certainly wouldn't be intentional. Some things can't be helped
like menus as they don't change. I don't mind if anyone uses this faq. so long as I get
some credit. jimbojan@hotmail.com

Before I go into the game I would like to mention that most of the Action Replay Pal.
codes work in this [ Inf. Health , Stupid Enemies etc. don't - I'm working on them]
and the Game Shark cartridge being almost identical, they should work in them too.

The "Debug" code also works, but most other controller codes don't. All these codes
work in "Story" & "Training" only. Tenchu A/Replay [Pal] codes can be got at
www.codejunkies.com Also there is an excellent site at GameBusters Paradise
which covers European, Japanese, US & UK codes. <gbparadise.de>

                                                   THE GAME
_________________________________________________________________________

First of all let us acquaint ourselves with the controls as the Japanese use the
opposite
to us in the west.

Use "Circle" for enacting menu commands, "X" for cancelling.

                                              THE MAIN MENU

After an absolutely wonderful FMV [mostly in colour] you will get a screen in Japanese
of four rows of text. They roughly translate as:

1. Story Mode

2. Training

3. Special Missions

4. Options

Story & Training are the same as in T:SA only the Japanese language version seems
to have slightly different cut scenes. Special Missions covers Time Attack & Level
Editor modes which I'll explain later. Go straight into NO.4 Options and you'll see a
menu which roughly translates as:

                                                OPTIONS MENU

1. Records: Rikimaru/Ayame 6. Control Config.
default/custom

2. Difficulty: normal/hard 7. Force Feedback: on/off

3. Sound: stereo/mono 8. Mem.Card: load/save

4. Volume: dialogue/music 9. Autosave: on/off

5. Test: dialogue/music 10. Language: Jap./Eng./?/?

Default position for all are either left or top on sub-menus

__________________________________________________________________________

                                         LANGUAGE MENU

When you access the Language menu you'll get:

1. Japanese: default

2. English

3. ? [French when earned]

4. ? [Italian when earned]

English/French/Italian are only in Story & Training modes and French/Italian have
to be earned by completing Story mode with any character. Now I know the game
I prefer to play everything in Japanese - it feels more authentic and the cut scenes
are better.

__________________________________________________________________________

                                          STORY AND TRAINING MODES

These are exactly the same as Tenchu: Stealth Assassins in both US.NTSC and
UK.Pal. versions except for the slightly different cut scenes in Japanese language
games. So I won't go into them as there are many excellent faqs out there who can
do a better job than me. I will however give you a little tip if you don't mind
cheating.
To gain extra level tiles/scenarios in Level Editor you need to get through the Story
mode levels and if you want to gain the bonus level [AD.2030 set in the future] for
your Level Editor you need to get Rikimaru through his game. Seeing as I couldn't
find a code for Inf.Health and I wanted to get access quickly to the scenarios I used
the Debug cheat and used the gun and also the resurrection leaf [kawarimi] options
on "Infinite" Instead of the gun you can use Shuriken or Yumi [arrows] but I found
the gun best. Then just go and kill everybody in sight. You'll probably get the title
super "THUG" but it doesn't matter, you got the tiles. You can always replay it being
honourable.

                                           SPECIAL MISSIONS

When you enter Special Missions on the Main Menu you'll get:

1. Time Attack

2. Level Editor

3. Modify/Delete Created Level

4. Exit To Title Screen

                                                 TIME ATTACK

As you enter Time Attack you will find 5 pre-created scenarios based on the
Training Level. You can use them as they are or develop them more in the Level
Editor. As you scroll down the scenes are all the same but their objectives are
different. As you finish each level in Story mode you receive it's scenario in the
Level editor including the bonus AD2030 when you've completed Rikimaru's game.
These can then be developed in the Level Editor.

                                                 LEVEL EDITOR

This is where the fun begins. When you enter Level Editor you will see this screen:

1. Title of Level to be Created [optional but advisable]

2. Author's Name [optional]

3. Password [optional but stops people tampering with your new level]

4. Scenario [level tiles]

5. Objectives [mission]

6. Stealth Mode: on/off

The first 3 are set up in oriental [Japanese/ Chinese] and western lettering, so
scroll the alphabets using L2 and R2. Use the D-pad to scroll the letters and L1
and R1 to move back and forth along your printing. Use "O" to insert a letter and
"X" to delete. When you've done writing and are satisfied exit with "Start"

As you scroll down the NO.4 Level Editor and come to "Scenarios", a little arrow
will appear on the screen pointing to the right. Toggle it to select your scenario.
The picture on the bottom right of the screen will change as you toggle. The
different pictures are governed by how many levels you've completed in Story Mode.

As you scroll down NO.5 "Objectives" another little arrow appears. Toggle it left to
right 1 to 5. This is not a menu it's an objective list. Here it is:

[1] Find Lord Gohda

[2] Find Echigoya and kill him

[3] Kill everyone but innocents gaining more points if unseen

[4] Escort the Princess Kiku to meet her father and protect her from assassins and
     death traps

[5] Find a special herb to save the Princess

Scrolling down to NO.5 "Stealth" at the bottom a little arrow appears again. This
moves only once, left and right. Left is OFF [default], right is Stealth Mode ON.
Don't even think about using it unless you're a very experienced ninja or it's game
over if you're spotted.

When you're done setting it all up press "Start" and this will bring you into the
Editing Plan [tiles]

                                                   EDITING LEVELS

The next scene is a 2D plan of your scenario. I'll call it P1. What you'll see is an
area of tiles in which to place structures on. The structures and plan are based on
the scenario you chose in the Editing Menu.

At the bottom of the screen you will see structures ie. buildings, steps, ramps,
blocks, bollards, traps [arrow blocks etc.], trap activators, deathpits, street lamps,
water, waterways, pathways & so on. Toggle the structures using L1 and R2. When
a structure is highlighted move the RED square cursor with the D-pad to your
selected area. Press "O" to place, "X" to delete. As you're building your level you
can check it by holding L1 to view in 1st. person 3D, spinning round the area with
the D-pad. To position these structures ie. steps and ramps, use "Triangle & Square"
to turn objects. Don't overtax yourself keep it simple at first, you can always modify
it later. When this is all done and you're happy press "SELECT" on your controller to
bring up the 2nd Editor, which is a small insert menu on the left of your plan.

                                         2ND. LEVEL EDITOR INSET MENU

1. Exit to Main Edit Menu

2. Place Structures in Level [P1]

3. Place Characters in Level [P2a & P2b]

4. Run Test Mode

5. Save Created Level

6. Save to Mem.Card and Exit

First off select "Place Characters in Level" and the objects at the bottom of the screen
should change to people - enemies and allies depending on objective and/or scenario
you opted for. This is P2a. If it's different, it's P2b so press "Select" again. The
first
character will be Riki. Highlight him and place him where you want him to start using
the same method as in P1. If you want to you can send Riki out on a test run without
enemies to inspect your work, but you'll probably have to kill him to exit. [suicide]

After, when you're happy where you've placed everyone press "Select" to bring back
the inset and re-select "Place Characters" and you should get P2b. If not retry. P2b is
a way to get your enemies and allies to move [or not] on your chosen routes. Your
people are already in a pre-selected position [which you can alter] so highlight them
placing the RED cursor over them. Press "O" once and a little pale blue arrow will
appear over them pointing up. You then use the D-pad to make a route for them with
the blue arrows going left, right,up & down for direction. If you want them to pause just
press "O" and it will make your person pause for 1 to 9 seconds. Delete any part of
the route with "X" and when you're happy press "Start" and the route will "Auto-Test"
To delete if not satisfied use "X" again. When done with that character and you wish
to exit the route test, just move the cursor away with the D-pad and go to the next.
To re-edit the route just press "O"

If you don't do a route the person will stay on the spot although they will turn as do
all sentries and they will still chase you if they see you. People you have to meet
are routed differently. They have a set spot where you rendezvous with them. Their
route is "from/to" instead of "to/from"

The Princess Kiku must have a route set out for her so she can meet her dad. She
can't climb walls and blocks like the others as she's only got "ickle" legs, so make
sure she has a clear run with ramps and steps to use. Do a test run of your created
level with Rikimaru and if happy, save.

After saving you can test it with either character and if alls well go back and "Save to
Memory Card and Exit" This will bring you back to the "Special Missions" menu.

                                 SPECIAL MISSIONS MENU - REVISITED

If you go into "Time Attack" you'll see your created level in there at the bottom of the
list as you scroll down with the D-pad with your scenario picture and the title of your
level. If you didn't use a title you'll get some Japanese writing which probably means
"Untitled"

To delete or modify your new level go into "Modify/Delete Created Level and you will
see all your own created levels. To delete highlight the level and press "Triangle"
verify
with "O" To modify press "O" and if you didn't use a password it'll bring you straight
back to your plan [P1] ready to modify. If you used a password, a password checker
will appear. When you have entered your password press "Start" to bring you back to
the plan [P1] If you forgot your password HARD LUCK ! you won't be able to modify it
but you can delete it.

Note: You cannot delete or modify the original 5 "Time Attack" levels for many obvious
reasons but you can modify and delete levels you created from them.

Easy this Japanese "innit" err... I think not...

                                                    APPENDIX

Most of the authors of the Tenchu faqs I read, seem to use and prefer Rikimaru in play.
I on the other hand prefer Ayame, not the best looking video icon in the world I grant
you, but she's certainly prettier than Riki. She's a feisty minx who's fast and can hide
easily. She's less clumsy and she's vicious, taking no prisoners unlike Riki who seems
to pull his punches. She rips them to pieces before they can say "Boo" to a goose.

Maybe, just maybe this faq will help with the new level editor on Tenchu 2. I don't
know, but there's one good thing about you people in the States getting it a month
before us. You've laid out all the faqs and strategy guides before we've got the game
so we can now jump in the deep end as soon as it's released. I thank you for that.

10/9/00 Just a little extra word - I should have got Tenchu 2 a couple of days ago,
but it's not come yet. Never mind worse things happen at sea. Only I expect it will
have "Crimson Blade" in it instead of "shuriken" You see shurikens are banned in
Europe, so our censor saw fit to ban them in Stealth Assassins. Maybe he thought
little Johnny would go out attacking his pals with throwing stars. Little Johnny is a
minor, he shouldn't have the game in the first place eh..?

I hope this doesn't sound like politics, it's not mean't to. Just food for thought.

Anyone know where I can get a crate of throwing stars from a "shady" arms dealer?

I've managed to bunch most of these codes together, but I'd advise
separating them especially Level 9. It crashes if you use it with the
others.

Pal A/Replay codes by redel@gbparadise.de for Tenchu: Stealth Assassins UK vers.
that work in Tenchu S/Gaisen are:

1. Missions enabling codes for both characters

2. All the items & weapon codes

3. Grandmaster status & stages

The only debug code I've found to work is the one you do by hand.

PLEASE NOTE NONE OF THESE CODES WORK IN TIME ATTACK OR EDITOR
