1. Purpose
    The purpose of this document is to provide a player of the Playstation
    game "Vagrant Story" details on enemy stats, their equipment, and what
    will appear in each room under various circumstances.

    The information in this document is applicable to the NTSC U/C version
    of the game.  The data tables are program-generated using data read
    directly from files on the game disc.

    The reader is assumed to have a working familiarity with the game and
    what all the stats mean.  No explanation is given here.  The extensive
    in-game help, the game's own manual, and other FAQs and guides cover
    those topics sufficiently.

    Plot details and play tips are not within the intended scope of this
    document.  No plot spoilers are given.  Some non-plot spoilers may be
    found, but only as they relate to the conditions necessary for an
    enemy to appear.  There are no play tips beyond what the reader can
    reason for himself from the data presented.

    The enemy information is presented one room at a time.  Conditions
    required for an enemy to appear in a room are given when known.  Chest
    contents, trap tiles, save points, and containers are identified if
    they exist in a room.

2. What's New
    This entire document is new, even though you may have seen it before.

    I posted informal drafts long ago, and intended to wrap up the project
    quickly with an actual release.  Attempting to include the Perl code I
    had written caused many minor but irritating problems.  After months
    of letting it sit, I decided that removing the code was the best way
    to get things done.

    Previous drafts of this "Enemy Guide" and the monolithic "Enemy
    Equipment and Combination Guide" have been spotted on various sites.
    These drafts were not intended for release.  If you have one of these
    posted on your site, I kindly ask that you please remove it.

3. Enemies
    This section lists all the enemies that can be encountered in the game
    and their intrinsic stats.

3.1. Preliminary Notes
    The game's encyclopedia lists 78 different enemies, but the player
    will encounter far more than that, and there may be two or more
    variations on a single enemy.  For example, the player will encounter
    a Wyvern during the opening scenes, and will encounter another early
    in the actual game.  Though they share the same name, they have wildly
    different stats.

    It would have been very easy for Square to give a completely different
    set of stats to each enemy encountered.  Fortunately, there are only
    one or two different sets of stats for each type of enemy.  For
    example, all Zombie Mages have the same basic stats, though individual
    Zombie Mages may carry different equipment.

    The table in the next subsection is a list of every enemy the player
    may encounter.  If there are any variants that have the same name,
    they are identified by a parenthetical descriptive subtype of my own
    arbitrary choice.

    Directly below the enemy's name are the base HP, MP, Strength,
    Intelligence, and Agility stats for the enemy.  The game alters these
    for each encounter by a small random +/- value.

    Below that is a table of the affinity and type defense values for each
    body part of the enemy.

        Affinities  Types
        ----------  ----------
        P=Physical  B=Blunt
        A=Air       E=Edged
        F=Fire      P=Piercing
        E=Earth
        W=Water
        L=Light
        D=Dark

    If there is no value given, it is the same as the value listed on the
    first line.

    The affinity and type defense values are constant and will not change
    from one encounter to the next.  The values do not include the +/-
    bonuses of the armor a particular enemy is wearing, which the player
    must consider when planning attacks.  Asura provides an excellent
    example.  Many players wonder why they have extraordinary difficulty
    landing any kind of attack on her in the time trial, even though they
    beat her handily in Iron Maiden B3.  The reason is that she's wearing
    the Marlene's Ring accessory in the time trial, which gives monstrous
    boosts to her stats.

3.3. About the Dummies
    The dummies can be knocked around to increase a weapon's Class and
    Affinity values.  There are seven different dummies--one for each
    class, and one more "Affinity" dummy that happens to be human.  They
    have 999HP, 250 strength, and 99 or 100 values in all defense
    affinities and types.  In short, they're tough mothers, and they're
    not going to just fall over and die for you.

    Beast dummy
        Raises a weapon's Beast class.
        Sometimes drops Elixir of Queens (HP+).

    Dragon dummy
        Raises a weapon's Dragon class.
        Sometimes drops Elixir of Dragoons (AGL+).

    Evil dummy
        Raises a weapon's Evil class and Light affinity
        Sometimes drops Elixir of Sages (INT+).

    Human dummy
        Raises a weapon's Human class.
        Sometimes drops Elixir of Queens (HP+).

    Phantom dummy
        Raises a weapon's Phantom class.
        Sometimes drops Elixir of Mages (MP+).

    Undead dummy
        Raises a weapon's Undead class.
        Sometimes drops Elixir of Kings (STR+).

    Affinity dummy
        Also known as "that other human dummy."
        Raises a weapon's Human class.
        Bashing different parts of him will raise different affinities of
        a weapon.
            R.Arm raises Earth affinity.
            L.Arm raises Water affinity.
            Head raises Dark affinity.
            Body raises Air affinity.
            Legs raises Fire affinity.
        Sometimes drops Elixir of Kings (STR+).

4. Rooms and Their Contents
    This section lists every room in the game, grouped by area and sorted
    roughly in the order the player might enter them.

4.1. Preliminary Notes

4.1.1. Room Features
    Items present in the room like chests and traps are listed.  There may
    be some general notes about the room where appropriate, necessary,
    convenient, or even just because I had something to say.

4.1.2. Enemies
    A description of each enemy that may appear in the room follows the
    room features.

    Name, Class, HP, MP, Str, Int, Agl
        Pretty self-explanatory.

    Conditions
        There may be conditions that must be met for a specific enemy to
        appear in a room.

        There can be a condition that relates to the player's HP.  The
        rooms best known for using this condition are in Iron Maiden B2
        where there are typically Shriekers if Ashley's HP is 150 or
        greater, and a Dark Crusader if Ashley's HP is below 150.

        There can be a condition relating to the progress of the story,
        which I've been calling the "Story Event Condition."  The game
        maintains a story event counter (at memory location 8006161A if
        you have a gameshark and want to watch or futz with it) that is
        incremented as things progress.  The increment is always in
        response to the player reaching a certain point or performing a
        certain action, and there's usually an associated cutscene to
        watch.  The event counter is often changed after the player enters
        a room, but event conditions for an enemy are applied when the
        player enters the room.

        Many story event conditions are meaningless because you'll never
        reach the room before the counter reaches the value necessary to
        make enemies appear.  I've tried to suppress these meaningless
        conditions, but some have been kept because they apply to other
        enemies.  Scrubbing them out would have either added significant
        complexity to my programs, or required a lot of manual editing.
        Nuts to both of those options.

        For example, the Crimson Blades in Town Center East will not
        appear before the player has visited Dining in Darkness in
        Abandoned Mines B2 and defeated the Sky Dragon, but the player
        cannot reach Town Center East before that point.  The condition is
        still displayed for them because it also applies to the Dragon
        Dummy at The Boy's Training Room in City Walls South, and the
        player is able to go there before fighting the Sky Dragon.

        There can also be a condition that depends on the actions the
        player has performed within the same area.  For example, at first
        there is a Zombie Knight at Hallway of Heroes.  Once the player
        has visited The Beast's Domain, the Zombie Knight is replaced with
        a Skeleton.  For lack of a better name, I've been calling this the
        "Local Event Condition" to distinguish it from the story event
        condition.  Again, where possible, meaningless things have been
        suppressed from the listing.

        An enemy can have both story event and local event conditions that
        must be satisfied in order for him to appear, but for reasons I'm
        not going to explain here, an enemy cannot have both a local event
        condition and an HP condition.  Sometimes either the local event
        condition or the story event condition loses significance because
        one cannot be satisfied before the other (study The Withered
        Spring for an example).  This could not be helped.  Blame Square
        for making squirrelly data.

        The rooms in the Wine Cellar and Catacombs have especially dense
        sets of conditions for determining what enemies may appear.
        Things lighten up as the game progresses.

        Major Bosses
            These are the big enemies.  The doors to the room will lock
            once the room is entered and the battle begins.  The player
            must defeat the enemy in order to proceed.  After the battle,
            there is a "stat roulette" which gives the player a chance to
            increase one of his stats, such as HP or Strength.  These
            enemies will never be seen again in the same room on the same
            game.

        Minor Bosses
            These are identical to the Major Bosses, except the player
            does not get the stat roulette after defeating them.  They
            often drop critical items.  Do not read "minor boss" to mean
            "easily defeated."  They can be every bit as capable of
            beating the tar out of Ashley as the major bosses.  The stat
            roulette is the only difference.

        Locked-door battles
            Upon entering the room (or after taking a few steps into the
            room), the doors lock, and the player must clear the room of
            enemies before he can exit.  Sometimes there is a time limit
            for the player to accomplish this task; if he runs out of
            time, he must exit through the door he entered from and try
            again.

            Unlike the bosses, the enemies will appear again in the same
            room if the player returns after leaving the area.  If the
            player returns before leaving the area, the doors will not
            lock; the same set of enemies, a different set of enemies, or
            no enemies at all may be present.

            There are some minor exceptions.  For example, visiting The
            Gallows or The Hero's Winehall will reset any locked-door
            rooms within the Wine Cellar, even though the player has not
            technically left the area.  Noting each of these exceptions
            was not considered worthwhile.

        Normal
            Unless otherwise noted, an enemy can appear in the same room
            on any visit throughout the game.  Once an enemy is defeated,
            he will reappear in that room once the player has visited four
            other rooms before returning.

    Body Parts (R.Arm, L.Arm, etc.)
        This is the list of the enemy's different body parts.

        If any armor is worn on a body part, its material and name is
        given in the second column.

        The third column shows the chance that the enemy will drop the
        piece of equipment when defeated.  In order of descending
        probability, these are as follows:

            always      The item will always be dropped.
            excellent
            very good
            good
            fair
            poor
            very poor
            remote
            abysmal     For all practical purposes, never.
            never       The item will never be dropped.

        For those who care where the drop chance came from, every item
        carried by every enemy has one byte that governs the drop chance.
        If the value is 255, the item is always dropped.  If the value is
        0, it will never be dropped.  Any other value represents a hit or
        miss chance, and the probability increases as the value increases.
         I simply mapped ranges of these numbers to the descriptive words
        listed above.  For anything besides "always" or "never," the value
        is given in parentheses, just because some people like numbers
        more than words.

        In earlier drafts of this document, I chose to express the drop
        chance as a percentage because it was convenient and easy to do.
        Readers have interpreted that percentage in ways I never intended,
        and I now regret that choice.  The ratio "X/Y" is meaningless if Y
        is unknown (which it is) or chosen arbitrarily (which it was).

        The fourth column is a list of attacks/spells/other tricks the
        enemy can perform.  Attacks and spells are evidently associated
        with the body part.  I assume that if you can damage that part
        until it is crippled, the enemy will no longer be able to perform
        those actions.  I also assume that when an attack is listed on
        more than one body part, both parts must be functional for the
        enemy to use the attack; crippling one of them should be enough to
        stop the enemy from using it.

        Not all body parts are listed here.  Body parts were omitted if
        there is no armor on it and there are no attacks associated with
        it.  Including them all would have added significant bulk to the
        text without giving any useful information.

    Weapon, Shield, Accessory
        This is more equipment carried by the enemy.  Shields and weapons
        built of several different pieces have each piece listed
        separately.

    Misc Item
        These are the miscellaneous items an enemy may drop.  At most, an
        enemy will drop three different miscellaneous items.  Two of these
        can be dropped in multiples (e.g. 3 x Cure Bulb), and they are
        always dropped.  The third can only be dropped as a single, but
        the chance of dropping can vary.  The second column names the item
        and how many will be dropped (if more than one).

4.1.3. Multiple Copies of Single Rooms
    For some rooms, the game will use one room definition file at first,
    and later change to another.  I have a feeling that each version of a
    room counts toward the 100% map completion goal, so you may want to
    try returning to them if you can't find any other unvisited rooms.

    Room of Rotten Grapes (Wine Cellar)
    The Gallows (Wine Cellar)
        These two rooms change after the player obtains the ability to
        teleport.

    The Lamenting Mother (Catacombs)
        The floor drops out when an earthquake occurs after you defeat the
        ghost and go back to Shrine of the Martyrs.  Each copy of this
        room has a chest with the same contents, but you can only collect
        them once.
