Simple enough: what do they do?
You exchange them for special items from Merrick's shop. Merrick will open its show after a certain point in the game and he will start exchanging items after the pub opens and one of the patrons there tells you that he is looking for the Gilded Falcons.

statusI also think you have to get the Secret Pass from Lutas' house by jumping through the chimney when there's no smoke coming from it. You can get into the house for a short time after you defeat the Corpse Worm in Magyscar Cavern and I noticed the smoke went away again at another time after it came back the first, but I don't remember when that was.
