That is not normal, either your game is screwed up or your playstation, i suggest bufing your disc and making sure it is all scratch free...
This happened to me in the first Resident Evil. Check your disk. If it has a lot of scratches, go to your nearest game store. Buffing your disk will cost you about $2 to $5 no taxes included. If it has a crack, it is a whole different story.
Sounds like a defective game and\or system...
If your disc isn't dirty or anything then i think it's your system. What system are you playing it on?
