Yes it is possible. A good trick to use is make sure to un-equip any magic scroll items from all the characters you meet and get in your party before hand and be sure to save on the mountain road before going to town. Also be sure to recruit the squirl early (nukunuku i think his name is?) by going to the clif behind your house and selecting the tree 3 or so times. Then go on as normal but be sure to equip your characters with the magic scrolls before you leave the house.

Even though you have a little more power then you usualy might have odds are your still going to loose unless you have a little luck with your characters evading and blocking and you use your items right. (like me ^^) Anyway, just keep going on with the game, but dont save! (be sure to go back for your sister after your rescued also) Keep fighting and lvling up untill you die. Choose to continue and you'll be at the last save but still have those extra levels you earned from before. Go back and get the squirl again and your sis and they will also have the extra levels. The fight should be a piece of cake now though even if you beat him he calls more guards and your caught anyway.
