"Urban Warfare was a shock to me"

Delta Force: Urban warfare is a game that came out in the final months of PSX. It's sad to see the system die a slow and rather embarrassing death, but this title was actually worth a look if you enjoy military tactical shooters, even more so in First person.

Gameplay: 8 – so here's how it breaks down. You're a single Delta force soldier (They are with the US Army for those who don't know) and this lone infantry sentry is ambushed by enemy forces. The platoon is attacked, and he is the last man standing. From here you can follow the rest as you please. The game is played from the first person perspective, (a.k.a First person shooter). You'll do everything from laying down anti-personnel mines, right down to picking guys off using an UZI. But what makes DF: UW so engaging is the fact that the game gives the player various options to approach their mission. For you hardcore military nuts, the game has a good selection of hardware, ranging from the M16A2 to the UZI, to SPAS12s and Mp5s; it's all a fairly appealing set of weapons. There is also a large assortment of explosives too. And from there, the elimination of tangos is up to you. The missions are nothing spectacular, but they do seem addictive if you're into it. The game is a lot like the Spec-ops series in terms of perspective and gameplay mechanics.

Stealth and covert operations play a role in this game as well. The enemy sentries posted in Delta force: UW will walk a specific patrol, but only leave their post if a challenge or disruption of duty occurs. The AI isn't awfully bright to begin with, so sneaking around in Night vision is quite an easy task, just so long as you know what you're doing. To help make yourself less appealing, you can change stance, much like the Clancy games. Try Prone, kneeling or standing. The speed, accuracy and visibility vary upon which you choose, and what weapons you are operating. Speaking of operating, the environments in Delta Force: Urban Warfare are very nice looking, but not too intricate in design. Nonetheless, this is one solid game.

Visuals/audio: 9 – well, at least the game has aged well. The Graphics in Delta Force Urban warfare are simply awesome for a PSone game. The jaggies and misplayed textures however, are a Farcry from the amazing level detail in the weapons and character models. With such a mixed bag, many would be skeptical as to what to expect. The games overall look and appeal are great, and for any real gamer out there. They know the golden rule is “gameplay over visuals”. And that's correct for the most part. So apply that moral to delta Force: UW and you'll surly find something to like in this game. Audio is also a big winner in urban warfare. The guns ripple with thunder with realism and the explosives scream like a 4th of July after party. It's all good.

Verdict: 8 of 10
