Threads of Fate
Review by CyberMegaManX
"Yet another hit from Squaresoft."
I just wanna start out by saying this game is definently worth the cash to get it. It's definently worth at least a rental. I still recomend a weekend rental first before you buy though.
Story: 8
This game's story is done very well. It's based on the chatacters quest to find a relic to finish their goals. Mint is trying to regain her right to the throne and gain world domination, while Rue is searching for the relic to save Claire, the one he loves as a sister. And a few surprize elements come up in the story the further you get in the game.
Game Play: 8
This game has tons of gameplay. Each character has a set of different abilities. For instance, Mint has the ability to use magic and use different effects, while Rue has better striking power and he can change into any monster he beats (except boss monsters). The only flaw to this is that Rue can only have four available transformations at a time, and you have no say over which ones you keep and the ones that stay. This mainly gets annoying because sometimes you want to keep a certain monster, but it gets replaced by a nearly worthless monster after getting rid of some enemies. And Mint's attacking power isn't very good, and if you use a certain powerful effect a lot, your MP goes down like crazy, therefore meaning you have to engage in hand-to-hand combat at times. If you get used to long range attacks, this is suicide. Luckily coins of life come in abundance. If they didn't, Mint's game would be too annoying.
Sound/Graphics: 8
As usual, Square has produced yet another great game soundtrack. The tunes usually fit exactly what's going on. The graphics are good, but nothing that you haven't seen before. It's not quite as good as Chrono Cross graphic wise, and Legend of Mana has a slightly better soundtrack. Good, but not perfect.
Replay Value: 8
It's definently worth playing many times over. You can even get bonuses after your second time through. Really good replay value.
Overall: 8
This game is good, but it isn't perfect. Also, if you're lookin for a game to keep you busy 60 hours at a time, this ain't it. You'll definently want to rent it first. If you can get a five day rental, and have 10 hours to spend on it each day, You'd be better off renting it whenever you want to play it. But if you want to take your time on it, you'd better buy it. If this doesn't quench your thirst for an action/RPG, You'd best get yourself an N64 and a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. But if you rent it and like what you see, you shouldn't need to do that.
