Bomberman World
Review by deadlysin87
"Really bad campaign/story mode, but multitap 5 player is undeniably fun"
I remember the day my dad had bought me Bomberman World for our PS1. I was so excited because I never used to get a lot of games. Well, I put it in the console, booted it up, and found out that Bomberman World's single player story mode was about as fun as unclogging the family toilet on taco night. Just when I thought that my father had wasted his money, I discovered that you could use the multitap thing to have five player matches in a battle royal style, which didn't make it SO bad. For more explanation, here's my review of BOMBERMAN WORLD!
Graphics- 8 - vibrant colors, sharp animations, and detailed levels shoot the graphics score up to eight. Although this is a 2D game, the colors and details give the graphics above a passing grade. And the cinematic introduction's graphics aren't SO bad...
Sound- 5 - There must be a total of ten sound files on the Bomberman World disc, consisting of "OWWW!", "NOOO!", "BOOM!", "BOMB UP!", and a lot of really bad techno that makes you want to gag. Also, the sounds are low quality and sometimes sound like they're being muffled.
Gameplay- 6 - Simplicity is part of this games downfall. Every Bomberman level is on a grid where he can place bombs on specific points on this grid to blow his enemies to hell. The simple gameplay works in battle royal 5 player mode, because even those who basically never played any game before or weren't good at games (my dad, mom, sister, brother, friends, etc.) could easily grasp the gameplay, and we had a good time. Also, the powerups in multiplayer make the game very interesting. But the simple gameplay becomes a problem when you want to have a deep, engrossing single player game and storyline, but all you can do is walk on a grid and place a never ending supply of bombs everywhere. And by no means is this game easy, for it can challenge you for hours, but the game is, put simply, not good.
Storyline- 7 - Basically four "Dark Force Bombers" wanted to cause havic but "our ancestors" came and sealed them in a blue crystal, but a guy named BURGLAR released them upon the world, so Bomberman has to blow them to hell with his bombs. Wow. Anymore detail needed? I think so. And BURGLAR? What kind of name is that? Sometimes, it seems this game is lacking imagination.
In conclusion, if you're thinking of buying old PS1 games, and you find this on ebay or something, and you think " wow, bomberman world, only 2 cents!", don't even waste those two pennies unless you have a multitap and four other people to play with.
