Spawn the Eternal
Review by KFHEWUI
"This game is easily one of the worst PS1 games ever made"
Most games based upon comic books are bad. There are some exceptions to this like Turok and Shadow Man. Then there is Spawn the Eternal for the PS1. This is easily the worst PS1 game ever made.
How bad is this game you ask? How about the controls do not work? The fighting is awful. The camera is crap. The level lay out is poor and bland. The game is way to repetitive.
I think they planned this whole game out in five minutes then made the game and messed up in programming the game.
Controls. Let's start with the controls. I do not like games with bad controls. And Spawn the Eternal controls are awful. For example, to shot a fireball you have to press Up, Up+X. Well, I did this and guess what? It didn't work. I did shoot some fireballs, but the buttons I pressed where different. I pressed Up then quickly slide my thumb across the left then down button then I pressed X and he shot a fireball. Yeah, the controls were programmed extremely badly in this game. But not only that, but some of the combos were down right confusing. For example the arm rip. To do the arm rip you have to 1/2 circle front to back+X. Can some one tell what the heck that means? Because every time I did that I shot a fireball.
Music. This is probably the best aspect of the entire game. The music was very good, but the only problem is that music only played during combat. And since most fights usually only last about fifteen seconds, the music did not last that long.
Graphics. For a '97 game the graphics are decent. It just to bad that the enemies were so bland and repetitive.
Camera. What can I say? No, really, what can I say? The camera is a enemy. Numerous times I could not see where I had to jump. And, of course, the jump was over an bottomless pit and I usually ended up dying. But the good thing about this game is that you can save any where.
Game play. The game play is so unoriginal and so boring. This is the game play, fight enemy. Fight enemy. Fight enemy. Find item. Fight enemy. Fight enemy. Fight enemy. Find item socket. Fight enemy. Fight enemy. Fight enemy. Find next item. Fight enemy. Fight enemy. Find next item socket. Fight boss then find the exit. But along the way there are traps. This game has the most unoriginal traps every. Oh, boy, spikes that fall from the ceiling. That trap is used so much in the game that it gets old fast. But that is not the strange part. The strange part is that some lava will kill you, while other lava will only take off little health. Wait!? WHAT?! That makes no sense. Another problem is that I was running by a fire and took damage. I didn't touch the fire, I just ran by it and took damage. Then I actually ran through the fire and TOOK NO DAMAGE! WHAT?!
But that is not even the worst part. No, some thing even more horrible. Something pure evil. Mysterious death!! This next part shows how bad this game is. When you are in a fight, some times the back ground would completely disappear for no reason. But wait there's more. In combat, you can stand over the edge of a bottomless pit and not fall to you're death. Yeah, but there's more. If you kill an enemy and you are near the edge of the pit then you will fall and die. Yeah, this game is awful.
So to wrap this up... The game is crap. The ending is so awful and pointless. The controls were programmed wrong and range from sluggish to unresponsive. The camera is you're enemy. The enemies were bland and repeated a lot. The music was decent. The graphics were okay. The combat was awful. The level design was awful. The game play was repetitive.
If you are a fan of Spawn, avoid this at all cost. If you want a 3D action adventure game, look else where because there are better games than Spawn the Eternal.
