Army Men 3D
Review by KasketDarkfyre
"In the beginning...."
-Visuals 6/10-
Fighting the war against an enemy should always be fun and visually satisfying, but in this game, it does a very poor job of showing what war looks like, even in a fantasy way. Putting you in control of the ''green'' soldiers, your duty is to take out the ''tan'' bad guys through several stages that should look well detailed. Unfortunately, Army Men does a horrid job with pixelated graphics, heavy clipping, missing frame rates and alot of background meshing that puts the visual side of this game on the MIA list.
-Audio 6/10-
As with most action games, you're greeted with a soundtrack that tries to amaze the gamer, but ends up falling flat on its face. Each stage has a ''military'' style music to it that makes you cringe after hearing it for too long, and the sound effects come in with decent clarity, but also very annoying after about twenty minutes. Fire up the CD player, and listen to something else, cause you won't find the goods here.
-Control 6/10-
The control is twitchy at best, and fine aiming will take the average, and even above average gamer some time to figure out. Add this in with slow response time while run and gunning, and you'll find that the PSX control just can't quite handle it. This will be disappointing for fans of the PC version, and you'll probably end up throwing the control when you know you've hit a bad guy, and missed by a long shot, then turn and get wasted in the same breath.
-Game Play 6/10-
Several stages and several different missions meet you fromt he start, but most of them mesh together, and it really is hard to tell just what you're doing. The basic premise here is to waste as many of them, before they waste you into a melted pile of plastic. On that note, the difficulty level is really set for experienced gamers, and some of the missions can be on the hard, nearing impossible side.
You have a wide variety of weapons to choose from, and the different ways you can take out your enemies will keep you moving through the game, but there really isn't any replay value to this game. Mindless shooting and decimating, Army Men falls short again in a very important category.
-Overall 6/10-
Army Men tries to cash in on the kid side of gamers everywhere in which it's the good army men versus the old army men. Gamers who used to play with the little plastic toys in this fashion will find some enjoyment, but hard-core action gamers will probably do well with a weekend rental. Worth a look, Army Men is just that..worth a look, and nothing else.
