Resident Evil: Director's Cut
Review by DayoftheRhodes
"Resident Evil 1 is still the scariest of the bunch!"
Hot off the heels of Resident Evil 2, I was eager to feed my craving for zombies and Raccoon
City. I was immediately sucked in to the whole Resident Evil universe with part two of the
series. I ad to keep going. So I went out and bought Resident Evil: Director’s Cut with the Dual
Shock support. Boy was I sucked RIGHT back into the mix of the living dead. I enjoyed this
great game just as much as Resident Evil 2! It was much scarier and the difficulty was raised up
a bit. Enough with the opening mumbo jumbo, on to the review!
Gameplay: 10
The gameplay is great, and if you’ve played any of Capcom’s survival horror you know how it
works. You can push things aside such as mini-ladders and fish tanks (hehe). You can of course
shoot your assortment of badass guns, such as the Bazooka, the standard Beretta, the Colt
Python, the Combat Knife, the Flamethrower, the Rocket Launcher, and the classic Shotgun.
This game is extremely fun to play and it is very spooky. It just has more atmosphere than two
and three in my opinion. I jumped a lot more times than I did in Resident Evil 2. It’s the fact that
the locations are scarier in 1 than 2. I mean, a big giant mansion where weird experiments are
going on is much creepier than say, a police station. A zombie showing up from behind you in
the bathroom mirror is a particular creepy event. The bosses are cooler and more difficult too.
The giant snakes, Plant 42, The original Tyrant. You’ll have fun playing the game and that’s all I
have to say.
Story: 9
This is a great story that involves mutagenic toxins and and the evil company, Umbrella.
Umbrella is a company specializing in bizarre research has let something escape in the woods on
the outskirts of Raccoon City. The S.T.A.R.S. special task forced goes out to investigate when
they suddenly get separated and must take shelter in an abandoned mansion owned by
Umbrella. This is where the fun/game starts. The story gets increasingly cool as it is revealed
throughout the game. The game really has a nice story and is revealed just at the right moments.
When the story is revealed at the end is truly a classic moment in videogames as far as I'm
concerned. Little tip: read all the notes you find in the game. They are pretty interesting.
Audio/Video: 8
The music in the game is great! I wouldn’t consider up to par with Resident Evil two and three,
but great nonetheless! Let me point out that the voice acting is so bad in this game that it is
actually pretty comedic. I can’t knock a number off the score for a little comedy can I? Great
points in the music are when you suddenly get attacked and the music picks up pace. The music
in the game adds to the eerie feeling you already get while exploring. The graphics are of course,
nice looking. For the time this game came out, these were top notch. The cinemas were
something people had never seen before. This is also the first game to use live actors in the
cinema sequences. Everything looks smooth with no problems I could see.
Replayability: 10
I’ve replayed this game 3 times and everytime I was entertained fully. I strongly suggest you try
getting the best ending you can get. If you accomplish this, the next time you play you’ll get a
colt python with infinite ammo from the start of the game! This way, you can finish the game
quick and at the same time have immense fun knocking heads off as you go along. Every shot
with the magnum leaves a zombie headless. The game is easily played again and I give it high
marks.
To Rent Or Buy:
I would rent this game first. Some people like to complain about the weird controls, so check it
out for yourself. This game is very good for fans of Capcom and survival horror games in
general. You can pick it up real cheap now and it’s a worthy purchase. This is the one that
started the whole Resident Evil craze that's going on today. So don' be a cheap skate and buy
this game!
