Medal of Honor
Review by Hurricane 540
"A game with good intentions, and a decent story-line"
Game Type: First Person Shooter
I purchased Medal of Honor about 6 months ago out of the pure urge to spend my money, and i heard it was a decent/good game from colleagues (aka. friends) of mine.
I'll break it down here in sections of what's the dillyo. So sit back, and hopefully you'll have a better understanding on the game once you're done reading.
Story: 7/10 You are Jimmy Patterson, a high ranking army recruit, sought by the OSS. It is D-Day. You run a series of missions with a good deal of briefing before each, so you understand your objectives. Your missions range from between sneaking into enemy barracks, stealing ID's; and plunging head over heals into the ''Impenitrable'' Fort Schmertzen.
Gameplay: 6/10 The game's overall playability is high. To be able to shoot those nazi jerks is an overall plus. The vast selection of weapons, only 2 being American: M1 Garand and Springfield sniper rifle; it's nice to be able to use so many foreign guns. There is a lot of killing, shooting, and not ANY strategical thinking, except for deciding when to sneak up behind a guy and pop him with your pistol. That kind of takes away the overall challenge of the game.
Graphics 5/10: poorly done, the game was from too new of an age to have such choppy, graphics. A rather smooth framerate, except when you got two guys shooting you from stationary guns while you run along.
Control: 4/10 The controls of the game are extremely... peculiar.... let's just say. Most first/third person shooters have X, or [] as their ''fire'' buttons for your gun. The Analog mode of MOH shouldn't be used by anyone, EVER. It's un-Godly confusing, don't even think about trying to use it. Using R1 as a fire button, just doesn't make any sense, Seriously folks. The whole ''trigger-like'' manipulation of using the R1 button doesn't really work. If you want to make a trigger like fire button, make your game for N64! (Z button).
Realistic: 10/10 This game is very realistic, and has wonderful AI. (e.g. When you throw a grenade at an enemy, they run after it, kick it, or throw it back at you.) The story is factual, and all missions originate from a real historical place/event, which makes the game that much cooler. It's very realistic in that, when you shoot an enemy in his head, his helmet will fly off (if he's wearing one), or in other cases, your bullet will go straight through to his head.
Sound: 8/10 The sound of the game is great. Not exactly the music, which isn't the most memorable, but the speaking. You actually hear the German enemies speak in German. As a default setting, enemies speak english, but (I'm not explaining how) you can switch their language to good old Deutch later. In one of the stages, you can actually hear a guy getting interrogated, then shot, in the back ground. (very cool).
Rent/Buy?: This game, for a WWII fanatic, or someone who likes first person shooters, especially ones that are realistic, should definately buy this game. If you are a gamer who would just like to knock out some Germans for the sheer curiosity, you should just rent it. The game doesn't take to long to get far in.
Difficulty: The game is not very difficult, but can be challenging at times. Covert missions seem annoying and hard at first, but as you complete them more and more, they become easier. It's just basically in covert operations missions, make sure you kill a guy quietly, so nobody else can hear or see you. The only real hard part, is when you can't see an enemy because they're too far away, and they blast a bazooka rocket at you without you're knowing they're there. It's VERY annoying.
Overall 7/10: The realistics make up for the bad graphics and controls.
Comments: The medal system is very clever. The more theroughly you complete a stage (the more you do), the more stars you'll gain for the stage. To gain a cheat, you must get 2 or more stars on all the levels (usually all have to be 3's). If you do so, you unlock a cheat from the cheat menu, under options. If you get 3 stars for the whole mission (about 3 or 4 stages each) you get a medal. A different medal is earned for each set of stages: Missions.
