Brave Fencer Musashi

Review by MasterReviewer

"SquareSoft...Don't you think you could of done a little bit better?"

Well at least this game shows that the people at SquareSoft are human. This game reflects poorly as an Action/RPG. The storyline is kiddish, as the names of the empires "Thirstquencher?" What is that? The graphics, I have to say, are just plain ugly. What happened there, SquareSoft? Plus the game is short. You can easily finish it in under 30 hours. Now, that's surprising for a SquareSoft game also, since they are always so massive. The only thing probably good about this game is that it has a playable demo of Final Fantasy VIII included.

Storyline 7/10

Ah - it's OK. But, it really is a plot for 10 year olds and under. You are Musashi, a summoned hero who's mission starts out where you have to find Lumina, the mysterious sword. Then the princess of Allucant kingdom gets captured. So - then all that happens. As you can see, childish, and older gamers probably wouldn't care for this storyline, as I did. It might even make you stop playing, since the plot is so boring.

Graphics 5/10

Yuck. What happened to all the beautiful level designs, nice-looking characters? Now they are all blocky, especially the characters and it looks very cartoonish. The bosses are not cool-looking at all, they also look like something out of a cartoon. SquareSoft, I am ashamed! What kind of engine is this???!!

Controls 10/10

Luckily, the controls are easy to use. Swinging the swords, learning magic spells from different guys...It all looks good and you can get the hang of em in 5 minutes flat.

Sound/Music 8/10

Interesting... The sound F/X aren't as good either. Musashi, talking in his high-pitched voice, seems to have no acting abilities at all and sounds really dorky. His voice is so annoying that I always skip through the part where he talks. Also, the sound of the sword swatting an enemy just is so unrealistic it isn't funny. The music is, luckily, good also. You will find yourself bopping to the beat of the high paced dance remixes at action scenes.

Overall 6/10

Geez... I would never think of giving a SquareSoft game a 6. But, unfortunately, they made me give them one with this game. It's not that bad, since it comes with a Final Fantasy VIII playable demo, but that is the only good thing about it. The game is just plain boring and bad. But - we are all human, so even SquareSoft can make mistakes, right? Follow up with a good one next time SquareSoft! :)
